?

(Yeah, another book...)

Add to that the fact that insurance companies generally charge poor people extra for insurance (at least, in this hellhole of a state), and if the vehicle is lost, will only pay you the blue book value if you're lucky.? Been there.? An old pickup... you probably will recover only a portion of your yearly premium.

The corporations assume that if you can't afford their rates, you can walk or take a bus (never mind that there are more poor people AWAY from the cities than within... and bus service doesn't cover most of this country)!

(The below is for the "blame game" people, Wayne, who seem to be very common in amateur radio and in certain.. buildings.? I would admit that maybe people don't understand how the rest of us are forced to live and assume that we've got extra money to spare.? I'm only too used to hearing this stuff and I know how much it hurts!)

It's also hard to buy "extra" insurance when you don't have a nice income.? We've been where we had to make do with "potato and onion soup" for our meals over several days recently, in trying to have the money to pay our bills.? That is normal... and things like food stamps help, although the program is based on 1960s data and doesn't begin to cover the cost of food today (add to that the sad fact that when poor people try to have a decent, balanced diet like everyone else, people judge them {wrongly} and will attack them - even to their face in line!)

Another tidbit - the person being attacked might be disabled, and most very real disabilities are not 'visible'.? A recent news article was revealing - only 23.7% of people with disabilities have been able to hold a full time job for more than one year.? The ADA isn't working as it should - it's being used more to provide tax breaks for corporations rather than getting people gainfully employed!? They may be trying to survive on very little - and having extra cash to buy more insurance... not a possibility.

Another tidbit - most homeless people are young families, not the lazy drunk or doper that is the stereotype.? People who are homeless and used drugs generally didn't start until after they became homeless - using drugs was a coping mechanism to deal with the hellish stigma they experience.? The top ten reasons for homelessness - the first five are purely economic (job loss to downsizing or shipped overseas, hour or wage reduction if not outright wage theft, and so on).? Mental illness... if I remember right, it was 7th.? Drug use or alcoholism was 9th or lower.

In other words, poverty is usually not the result of personal failings, but usually a social evil caused by structures and policies.? People who haven't been there don't understand how rough it can be.

I've noticed a tendency in some of the people on this blog to blame people who've had a hard time, and to make suggestions that they may not realize are insulting.? It's easy to blame the person who had the problem, and ignore the person who CAUSED the problem.

Anyway, Wayne... it sounds like you've got a pretty good support base - the reality of poverty in the USA is that's the only way most poor people survive.? I was worried about that.

I can suggest a lot of good books (and research articles) on this subject, but will only mention a couple:

The Poor Pay More by Caplovitz.? A dated book from the 60s, but what he writes is still very true and accurate today.? I've personally witnessed it numerous times in the last 20 years.

Blaming the Poor by Dr. Susan Greenbaum.? A recent publication, it explores the reality of poverty and how we got to where we are in this country today.

Funny thing is that most working poor don't realize that they ARE poor (until they get hit with something like a burned truck).? It's not shameful to be poor, what IS shameful is that the things that would lessen the problem are strenuously fought against.

Re: Best location for an audio amp for a V4

I placed mine right at the output (wiper) of the volume control. I built mine from an LM380. I also placed a switchable 200 Hz wide CW filter between that point and my new audio amp. A throw of a toggle engages or disengages the new filter and a fixed resistor compensates for the gain difference so that it remains constant whether in or out. I opened R71 to save wasted energy. I am pleased with the results and cannot believe that I could improve upon it.

Your amplifier needs to have the output jacks isolated from ground since the output is bridged. Be very careful to do that. My only objection to it otherwise is the 10% distortion rating. Really? Is it actually that bad? Does it get into the rest of the radio, too? Might need some industrial-duty filtering. Let us know. The saved current drain and improved efficiency sure sounds tempting.

Re: separate CAT jack, without using the USB cable #ubitx #cat #raduino #arduino

So, just to keep everything updated:

Today I played around a little bit more and inserted some serial.prints to check out which functions are
being calculated and where the program stops.
In the following screenshot you can see that the power measurement function seems to be working.

However I am not able to print the status of the progress variable, though I don't understand why.

It is defined as "2" at the beginning of the sketch and should therefore be? either a "2" or a "FAILED" I think.
There are some further declarations in the second page which define which number refers to which status.

It seems as if the variable does not get the new value?

(// Bool stuff
#define WORKING??? 0
#define DONE?????? 1
#define SUCCESS??? 1
#define FAIL?????? 2
#define NOPWR????? 3)

Re: Kit-Projects ND6T Ubitx AGC

Tim, I can definitely see it respond on the oscope and the audio volume stays pretty consistent until about S9+40, maybe +50. I'll take? better look in the next day or two.

By density, do you mean some actual signal to modulate the carrier? I have a two-tone oscillator kit I haven't gotten around to building yet. I could put some test setup together with it, the KX-3 and some attenuators I don't yet have.? Qualitative measurements are nice, but I like real measurements better.

If the bias is controlling the gain then the board is doing it's job as intended. But as far as drive for the S-Meter the voltage I get is a bit low.? At S9 it is only 84 out of 1024 as measured by the raduino's ADC, not a lot of resolution then between S0 and S9 especially since the CEC firmware (for some reason) divides that by 4. I'll have to look at why Dr. Lee's doing that.

Best location for an audio amp for a V4

I have a V4, and although it has enough output wattage for headphones, the volume pumped out of the speakers (even when running a 16ohm speaker) is a little wimpy.

So i bought the AdaFruit 2130 (?.? My first guess was to just put it just in front of the speaker and adjust its gain. Figured I didn't need to take a chance on blowing my ear drums out by putting it in front of the wiring that goes thru the headphones and then (if nothing plugged in) to the speaker.

Is there any better suggestions or experiences?

Thanks for posting this.? I am looking forward to this one.? I'm not embarrassed to admit that I ordered whatever I didn't have already after you posted a preview picture somewhere.? This completes the mystery as I wasn't sure on the encoder and was holding off on that.? I am also happy for the confirmation that I guessed right on everything else.

I'm not guaranteeing these are the best prices (or the right parts for that matter) but following are links to some of what I ordered in case it helps anyone...

Yes you will be surprised. Our builder group has meetings once a month. Maybe 10-12 may show up for a meeting.

When we hold a buildathon, everyone comes out of the woodwork. Our buildathon last weekend attracted 26 people that normally don't attend the meetings.

Nothing is really critical, other than I'm expecting to see about 9-12V coming into the system. I used the buck converter as it is a little more efficient than a 7805 regulator and I do want someone to be able to power it from a car's 12V power outlet (i.e., the old cigarette lighter).

Re: Low power output on ubitx

Are you using electret mic as the mic pin is having dc bias voltage?
Generally we provide a 1nF? cap across the electret. That filters rf induced on the mic cable.

Reg ver 3 drawing 650mA on Rx with volume control at minimum, please check whether the audio amp is landing into oscillation. You could place a 1nF at? Vol mid pin close to the tda2822 and gnd. If the chip is too hot oscillation could be suspected.?
Once the Rx? current comes down to expected standard, you can adjust the mos fet currents one? by one after making the gate bias as zero at first stage.

Perhaps you might have already exercised all above steps.

? He k once whether the bias regulator output is dropping down not allowing needed Id? for the IRF510s.

Hope to see you solving out the issues.
