Re: #sbitx VNC access to sBitx + wsjt-x works #sBitx

John,

If you don't have a previously made copy of the v2 data, it must be created.
Because the given hw_settings.ini file is prepared for the given hardware.
If you download a new micro SD card image, it will not have the appropriate ini files for your hardware.
Those of us who received v2 hardware from the very first shipment had to create these files ourselves.
By the very first delivery, I am talking about those delivered in April and early May.
In the case of current deliveries, they are delivered with ini files created for the given factory number.
It is on the supplied uSD cards. When you upgraded v2 to v3, it was pointed out everywhere that you should copy these,
that you have to put them back into the program after the upgrade.

I suggest you check it out, if you have any copy of v2 you can extract this data from it.
Look for it in the /Home/pi/sbitx/data/ folder.
If there is none, make a copy of default.hw_settings.ini and rename it to hw_settings.ini.
Then the fine tuning begins... which takes quite a bit of time.
A previous conversation helps with this. See 'Where to set power levels' starting in message #102598.

My $0.02: yes to doing both.

I have learned the hard way to keep backup copies of the image, see my earlier post.

I suggest you start with a copy of your backup of your factory-fresh image, if you have one.

If you don't have one, start with a copy of the newest available image which is the V2 image:

  • as shipped?with version 2.1 software?for the sBitx. Download, unzip and?.? More details at?this post.?

Make sure your drive control works with that image.

Then, if it does, make a backup of that image.

Then, move on to V3 only once you know the V2 image works as expected.

  • Update the software in-place:?link

Once you know the drive control is working on V3, then if you did not start with a backup of the original factory image either live with the "conservative" settings or follow the calibration procedures at??and do calibration (presuming you have the equipment to do so).

They went out of habit and almost every day and everything that was discussed here before. :-)
Please do the same, but always have a copy of the essentials.
Remember, if you've modified something and it works, make a copy right away.
Have a backup folder with dated content that you can return to when necessary.

Sbitx V2 isolated low power (high current) only on 17M band

I would very much appreciate any help hunting down this problem that I have had for a while with my sbitx V2. There’s an isolated low output only on 17M. Please see this chart I made back when I used IRFZ24N finals.

(Last week I carefully upgraded the hardware with IRF510s, and have some issues regarding that, but I’ll leave that to another post. Here I have a problem with output from one single (17M) band.

(n.b. I always re-calibrate the PA bias after each re-installation of new finals.)

These measurements in the first table were at Drive=100. These values may be low as I was using an old hw_settings.ini file. I will re-calibrate using the proper hw_settings_v3.ini file, but my purpose here is to highlight the trouble on the 17 meter band which occurred and persisted whether I have used IRFZ24N finals, or IRF510s (with every appropriate resistor changed to upgrade to the V3 configuration per instructions), or with new SD cards and new images, new git clones of the sbitx folder, even different Raspberry Pi 4 units. So I think there is something wrong with my V2 main board. My first assumption was that there was a failure in the LPF filter section but the 17M band shares the same LPF circuit with the 20M band and it seems to work on 20M. Output voltages were p-p as measured on a Siglent 1202X-E scope.

Band???Current???Output Volts???Watts (calculated)

80M???—briefly about 20 watts (on the outboard meter, not from the oscilloscope)? Finals blew before full measurements could be made.

With a new set of IRF510s a few measurements were made at various Drive numbers, and including the gate voltage:

?

The IRF 510s in my V2, reincarnated as a hardware V3, may be from a bad or mislabeled batch of 510s from Amazon. A couple of dozen units from Mouser should arrive tomorrow. I’ll also start with the proper hw_settings.ini file especially for the V2 to V3 hardware upgrade. But the low output on 17M predates any of that, and as I outlined before I think there must be a part that failed on my main board. I already have extra FQN1N50Cs I have yet to use, but I don’t know how to further investigate this problem. Any hints would be very helpful.?

FS SBITX V3 Board

I purchased and received a V3 board and now have decided to purchase a factory built complete radio.
My V3 board is available. Powered up and tested transmitter. Board is 100%.
Sold as HFsignals sells. No mic, case, or RPI included. MicroSD included.

I'll take $20 off so $160 plus actual shipping - CONUS only.?

Re: #sBitx Help with Raspberry Pi 7" display cable connector #sBitx

Hank, IIRC the connector on the 7 inch video board is slightly different from the connector on the Raspberry Pi. Since the connector on the video board is the one most often opened and closed the tab that breaks requires a replacement not found on the camera connector of the Raspberry Pi.?

Try to use the device with only one accurate ground. So that there is no ground loop.

Re: SBItX Screen went blank Power dropped to 3 volt draw

The reason PA blow is not swr. It is heat and over drive on the gate.
Proper PA transistor mounting and the Transient Suppression Diodes make it robust. That is what the v3 does.

If you are very careful you could remove the cable clamp from the camera input and use it on the display connector. I got lucky, somehow the clamp on mine fell off but it was still intact so I was able to reuse it.

I would certainly like to get that package.
For the immediate time, I will change out to the spares that came with my v2.?

Question, I run the unit at ~80 % power level, should I be going lower to extend the life of these transistors?

Re: sBitx v3 FT8 Audio #sBitx

Gyuula, that mostly did the trick, but I still hear it making some noise.? Much better than the screaming from before, so that's good.? Seems a bit odd to have that linked to the audio output.
