Re: It's alive!

My uBITX is progressing a little slower than some others.? After much contemplation
I decided to do the chassis thing in two stages.? First chassis will be temporary and
serve for initial testing and as a template for a yet-to-be-built aluminium box.

For the temporary chassis I cut some plastic sheet and used hot-melt glue to fabricate
a box.? It is necessary to measure carefully in order to have the LCD protrude from the
front panel and the heat sinks against the back panel.

?
This image shows the front panel with components mounted but not yet wired.? Labels
have not yet been applied.? The upper left LED is a RED unit and will show relative
antenna current.? The lower left LED is bi-color (Red and Green) and will be show
transmit and receive mode.? The upper right LED is green and will show when power
is on.?

Other images are attached to this email.? Hopefully they will be viewable by all.

The rotary encoder that came with my uBITX does not have mechanical detents.? It is free-running.

Rotary encoders that I got earlier from Ebay vendors look the same but they do have mechanical
detents.? Some have one detent stop per 2 steps and others have one detent per 1 step.? The
2-step types require a slight software modification to make them work best for tuning applications.

I did it with an encoder that I use to tune my PC with HDSDR.

It's a mess, but I have my ?BITX working now. I wanted to get it working before I put it in a case which is why there's wires all over the place as I trimmed none yet. That will happen when I move it to a case, which will likely be the plastic case from Banggood. I just finished wiring it, so I haven't had a chance to really use it, but just tuning across the band it seems very sensitive. I'm using headphones so there's plenty of volume. The encoder appears to be optical (?) as there is

feel of detents when tuning. To all those who are waiting, it will be worth it!!

Re: uBITX Display Separation Cable

Is the display missing a couple of digits?

Re: uBITX Case

I'm by far an expert at this, but what about using support structures or breakaway columns as the case is being formed?

Or buy a pack of male-to-female jumper wires labeled for Arduino use (to make sure you get the right header pitch and pin size) and tear off only the 16 you need.

My pack of 120 (40 male/male, 40 male/female, 40 female/female) cost $10 on Amazon for ~6" long and have been very useful while soldering up other connections for mods.

At about 7" x 6" x 2" tall that's a pretty big item to 3D print IMHO

The BITX, whether u or not, can benefit from this :) . Makes for more case and panel options.

If he follows his usual approach, Sunnil in India is likely to produce a custom case for the uBITX, as he has for the BITX20? and BITX40. His prices will be difficult to match, I suspect.

Hello all,?

I'm new to the group. I was sent here from a where they were talking about a case. I work as engineer/drafter at sheet metal fabrication company. We design, manufacture and powdercoat all sorts electronic enclosures for customers.

If I made the cut-off, I will hopefully be receiving a ubitx soon and I will be designing a case to fit the ubitx. There is a possibility of mass producing cases. It could something along the lines of but designed with stand offs for the board and screen, speaker cutout (we would have to agree on a speaker) and powdercoated mini texture black. Once I get a design I could get it properly quoted and let you all know the price. Of course it would have to be on a pre-order basis.

Price will obviously be effected by demand, the more that can be made, the cheaper it can be. Other cost savings would be the removal of press fittings and coatings.

Let me know what you think

uBITX order enquiry

Ashhar,?
thanks for bringing the uBITX to the world.?

A quick question - I ordered and paid for one on Sat, 9/12/17.?
I haven't received any comms about it so far. Do I need to enquire about it ? or just sit tight and wait?

Thanks

Re: uBITX Case BNC vote

RCA connectors are readily available, inexpensive, and work quite well.

I don't know why hams are "stuck" on the inferior PL-259
plug and SO-239 socket. Well, I do. It's because manufacturers
keep sticking them on the back of radios and we don't insist
that they stop using them. For a small connector, I would
prefer SMA. BNC is "OK" but the bayonets wear out if you
you connect/disconnect them enough times. For a "large"
connector, the N connector is superior in so many ways.

uBITX Display Separation Cable

While waiting for my uBITX, I decided to try to come up with a way of mounting the main circuit board at the rear of a metal case so I could use the rear panel as a heatsink for the two IRF510's (with insulating hardware).?
The raduino must remain plugged directly into the main circuit board, so the only way to move the LCD display forward if required is to make up a display separation cable.
I found that a discarded computer IDE cable does the job. See the details here:

Re: uBITX Case

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I got both ant connectors on my case.

I used the small Jameco black and white enclosure.????? It is almost too small.? You drill either the biggest drill you have and file.

Or, go around inside your big hole with 1/8", try to get the center out, and then file.

A warning on the Jameco case, the bottom is Al, but the top steel.? I had to cut a 4" circle for my speaker in STEEL!

I used a fine metal blade in my sabre saw.? Cover everything with Duc tape first.? I was not fun.?? Thank heaven for variable speed.? Then I used a half-round big file to go to the circle edge.

I got 2 of the plastic cases suggested here on Bangood for $8 ea.? They took a month to get here.

I am going for one of those for uBit.?? If it fits?? I am going to paint them.? They are too White.

Thank you for your input Gordon, Rod, Arvo and others

Gordon, the point of the case is to have all the holes cutout. Otherwise it would be much cheaper to purchase a prefab case on banggood, hammond or whever and layout the cutouts yourself. I will have it quoted using 0.060 Alum (1.5mm) or 18ga Steel (0.048"/1.2mm). Currently the cost of aluminum per pound is 3x more than steel. I would consider galvannealed as well.?

Of course I will be posting 3d models and drawings for everyone to look over. However, person wants their unique case built to the way they want it but that is next to impossible unless you want to pay heavily for it which I don't think is beneficial for a $120 radio. I will consider everyone's input as well

Only questions I would have at the moment is a specific speaker that would be used and if they would be using a BNC or SO-239 chassis mount.?

Re: uBITX Case

I just ordered my uBITX which as I understand is back ordered.? When I get it and get it assembled, I will be designing a 3D printed case for it.??

Also I hope that we will soon see a place for only information on the the uBITx 3 to 30 Mhz version.? Since I signed up I am getting tons of e-mails for the 20 and 40 Mhz versions which I hope we will soon be able to click on something to stop those from coming.? I am only interested in the 3 to 30 Mhz version.
