Re: Conflicting information

Jack Purdum

For me, it's a bad-habit thing. If I get used to having two power sources connected, some day, just as sure as I"m sitting here, I'm going to plug in two power sources and get a min-Fourth of July show as I watch the magic white smoke that runs all electronic devices evaporate in front of me. I just think that, unless explicit told to do so, I just prefer to have a single power source.

Actually, I don't think it will have any effect on the computer usb port.
The reason it would not harm the usb port is defined in the Arduino Nano schematic...
Look at the schematic -?
The Nano has this magic little 'check valve' called a diode.

This is the info I have found for wiring up the mic , any info on how you wired up would be great!

Thanks?

HI Ryan,
How did this go with the HM36 mic? I bought the same one along with the 8 pin chassis mount. Do you have any advise or wiring diagrams for this?

Thanks

Re: Conflicting information

In addition to both Arduino's documentation and schematic stating that running ?A USB and external power simultaneously is supported, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of commercial products using Arduino microcontrollers that optionally provide two sources of power to the Arduino.? Any RepRap based 3D printer (a vast majority of the kits and pre-built printers for hobbyist use) use an Arduino-based bored as the controller, if not an Arduino Mega and RAMPS board directly.? The Shapeoko CNC mill also does this.? If you think about it, everything from printers to external hard drives use an external power source when connected to USB.

If you are concerned about a cheap Arduino clone damaging your computers USB port, plug it in to a powered hub.? Worst case, the USB hub will sacrifice itself.

I've heard the anecdotes about things breaking. My anecdotes are that I've upgraded both my Raduinos 5 or 6 times while powered on, use my 3d printer with external and USB power all the time, and have built dozens of stand-alone Arduino projects that use the USB serial connection for debugging, all without ever blowing anything up.

I'm hoping that we can get past this issue as a community.? Imagine CAT control of a BitX for digital modes!? There is already an FT817 library for controlling a radio from an Arduino, so it shouldn't be too terrible to make it work the other way, assuming there is enough memory, etc...? I plan to take a shot at this when life slows down, but at the rate it's going it could be a while :-)

Anyway, thanks for reading if you made it this far.

Re: Bitx 20 help #w8tee

According to toroids.info 8 turns on a T50-37 core is 28.16uH. To get
28.16uH on a T50-2 core you'd need 76 turns.

Thanks Bill Meara, lm386 I will check, I live in turkey, t50-2 I use

Re: Bitx 20 help #w8tee

Your BITX 20 board looks very nice.?? If you are hearing a whistling sound on receive, your audio amplifier might be oscillating.? Check the grounding on the LM386.?

One other thing I notice from the photo:? I like your toroidal coils and I often use insulated wire as you have done.? But you wound the coils on red T-50-2 cores.?? I think you need ferrite cores that will result in higher inductance.? Type 43 material is usually used.?? If you need some, I can send some to you (Farhan gave me a bunch of these).? Let me know.?? (Where are you?0

Don't give up!? You are close to getting a wonderful rig on the air.

Re: Foreign orders #w8tee

Another easy way out, we investigated it for BITX boards as well, is to use fulfillment by amazon (FBA for amazon citizens).

I would be happy to hold some local stock and then handle orders from Australia and say New Zealand or other Pacific destinations at cost. The Australian Customs declaration is relatively simple and can be hand-filled, with the Post Office happy to give me a supply of blank forms.

I have handled a number of international group purchases this way.

Jack,

a couple of thoughts,

1) put your design on oshpark as a shared project. Others could then order (in multiples of three) at a reasonable price.

2) contact Hans Summer G0UPL ( I seem to recall he is a member of this group) who runs he may have some good ideas on how to better do what you are trying to do.

Either way, your commitment to providing these boards at a reasonable cost is commendable

Cheers, Graham ve3gtc

I just spent an hour at the post office while they processed each foreign order. Last night I spent another several hours filling out export/customs forms. Potentially, each country charges a different amount on packages to their country. Because the PCB "cannot be bent during processing", it has to be sent parcel post, rather than first class mail, which is much more standardized. The cheapest rate was over $9 to Canada and the most expensive were several European countries just under $15! I was stunned. I still sent the packages, but everyone in Europe only has a $2.62 credit as that's what I assumed the charge would be plus a little more. I told people read the postage cost on the outside and remit that amount less $2.62 since you've already paid that. In most cases, that make the board stupidly expensive.

If the European Union has one rate for parcels, my solution is to sell a bunch of boards to one place in the Union and let people order from them. Same for the Pacific Rim. Another solution is to find someone who likes waiting in post offices and filling out forms and let them handle the foreign orders. The third alternative is to not take foreign orders, but that's unacceptable to me.?

So, if you have some great idea for solving this problem, please write me off-line so we don't chew up bandwidth here. I'm good in QRZ.com. If something looks like it will work, I'll inform the group.

Also, I'll post to the group when the new shipment of boards comes in.

Jack, W8TEE
