Can you post a picture indicating where the smoke comes out and which trace has been blown?

That part is a voltage regulator that includes current limitation, so I do not think you have a short on the 5V line (you are saying that you got few "minutes" of tuning around before blowing the trace).

What are you using as a power supply? Does it have current limitation? Can you measure the current you draw from the power supply?

I suspect you have a short on 12V.
