Just wondering,? are you going by the silkscreened markings on the board for voltage polarity? I think I heard somewhere that some of them? in the past were labeled wrong? Maybe a different radio, can't remember.? It might be a good idea to trace the wires to actual components to verify before reapplying power, just in case.

If you still want to pursue the stock regulator, I suggest installing the Dupont header pins and using a Dupont wire jumper to connect to the pins.? Leave the power on the input and adjust the variable resistor carefully.? It only rotates 200+ degrees with flimsy stops—practice before connecting power to get a feel for the adjustment.
