That is why I have to manually set date and time before I can use update.

The RTC in the Sbitx design is not connected to the system I2C bus.? It is connected through a software program that runs as part of the sbitx program.? That means the Raspberry Pi OS clock is not updated unless the sbitx program runs.? The operation that you describe is normal.
