ATU 1000 Newbie questions

Hi, Just joined the group. I got a N7DDC ATU-1000 from Aliexpress, and have successfully built it. There appears to be plenty of info on the ATU-100,., but little on the 1000.
There are a couple of questions I would like to ask.
My ATU shows (the latest) V3.2 firmware on the Oled screen. (one of my changes would be to a larger screen so its easier for me to read - I'm not a youngster anymore!)

I have tried to read the PIC, and it returns all Zero's. I suspect it may be that the PIC is protected and therefore unreadable. It think it means I cant adjust any of the parameters.

As I cant read the Data part either, I have no idea what the settings are either.? So my next question is this.
Is the ATU-100 Firmware the same as the ATU-100, and just the Hex Data is different, or is there different? firmware for each model (and Hex data too)?

I really don't want to have to remove to the PIC from the PCB as its soldered in. But I think even though its protected, I can re-programme it. Downside is loosing the data in the chip, but then I cant read it either!
So, if I reprogramme it, its a one way trip, it will either work, or I will have burnt my bridges and be left with a useless ATU, as I wont have the original chip to go back in.

Can some kind soul let me know if my thinking is correct, or at least a way forward., or point me in the right direction.
I am no programming expert, so keep it simple. I'm 70+? and more of a hardware person!?

Thanks in advance

Hi, Geoff
Looks like the MCU FW is protected to be read. You have to erase it and configure simple ATU100 FW before upload it .?

It has a price, but it is bigger OLED you can use here

Hi, and thanks for the reply.? That display looks Interesting.?

So you are saying the actual firmware is the same for the at-100, and the atu-1000?
That's good news if it is.

Next problem is getting the settings / data changes for the atu-1000.?

I can manage to reprog it, if I know what the data is and which cells to put it.?

Thanks for your info, it's a small step in the right direction.

Much appreciated for you info.

David et al,?
? ? ? ? ? ? Thanks for that link.
Progress so far:
Have managed to extract the soldered in chip, and replace with a holder and a new chip without damaging the pcb.
I have looked at the info you pointed me at, and have had some success.

I now have 3 displays to choose from. The original 0.96" one, A 1602 LCD one. and the 2.42" OLED one mentioned above.
The 2.42" one has a SSD1309 controller.
The 0.96 does not appear to have any controller info written on it. This one worked with the original Chinese (probably cloned) firmware, but I can't get that one running with the N7DDX firmware.
I have managed to get the 1602 one working, which has a 8574T controller. However, I would like to get all three working (obviously not at the same time!)

I have noticed that the displays have different orientation for 5V, GND, SCA, and SCL, and have observed the correct wiring when trying them out)
I cannot get either the 0.96" or the 2.42" ones working. I know its me, and I suspect its the settings in the Hex Data.
I have tried the address as 4E, 78 and 7E. I also found an article on the 2.42" that mentioned 3C, and have tried that too, with both Type 01,04 and 05.
I am not sure where to go next. I could stick with the 1602 display, but would like to see what the other two look like.
If anyone can let me know what I have done wrong, I would be grateful.
I have checked the L and C settings and they are correct for my board.
I have a 20 Turn Tandem Match installed which is what was in the instructions. (I think my board is a Chinese copy of the UR4UNR version)
I have Activated Cell 30 as I hope to use it with my 600W HF amp which is also under construction.

I suppose the bottom line is, that I don't want to cut holes in my front panel until I have decided which display to use.
As said I'm not a computer guru, and am on the edge of my technical knowledge when it comes to programming / firmware.
I really appreciate the help.

I have changed the other settings? and think I have them correct:
00 78 04 01 15 13 01 00 00 00 00 07 00 07 00 01 00
10 01 00 02 00 04 00 08 00 16 00 32 00 64 00 FF FF
20 00 10 00 22 00 40 00 82 01 60 03 20 06 40 FF FF
30 01 20 00 01 00 00 FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF

Hi, Geoff
00 cell equal to 00, as you show
But it should contain I2C address?
Looks like all the cells are shifted right starting 00.

What you need to change in defaults?
00 - 78
01- 04 or 05
30 - 01
31 - 20

That's it, should to work. Check the connection, pin out on display doesn't match pin out on tuner.
Good luck ?

David,
? ? ? ? ? ?Many thanks.?

This is the display

I have done a lot more reading, and not sure what I did, but got the 0.96" going on your firmware.? But is a bit small for my old eyes!

Have the 1602 display working as well.?

The 2.42" had me stumped, but found via the Web, on an Arduino site they mostly came configured for SPI? so I checked, and changed it to I2C, just a resistor move and a short of another.? However its still not working.
Also saw a lot saying 78? and 7A were not always correct and could be 3C or 3D. Have tried all combinations and still no joy.?

Would be nice to get it working.

Yes I'm very aware of the differing pin outs on the displays, I've seen this in the past when I built a MMDVM for DMR, although have given up on that as I just can't get my head around it. Again? me and computers, but I'm still learning albeit slowly.?

I have spoken with some club members only to find there are 4 of your ATU-100 amongst us, probably more. All speak well of them.

I really appreciate your help, and an close to having thus finished.?

Best regards
Geoff
G0DDX?
