Interesting.? I tried to use the display I2C to achieve this but gave up because the display did not respond only to data addressed to it.? In the end I added a second I2C which acts as a slave to a Raspberry PI.??
What hardware changes did you make to add the serial comms?? Depending on that I 'd like to try it on my ATU100.
