Re: ATU-1000 Assembly Instructions Needed

I haven't finished putting it together yet, I got all the inductors done except the two for the SWR yesterday. Things keep coming up but I hope to get it finished this week.

There were two vendors on ebay that I saw with the same kit, one of them (hison) is or was in this group. Both have said that they're aware of the bad Chinese toroids and have switched to others. The one I got (not from hison) said he imports the cores from Germany, so I went with the ones included in the kit. If I have any heating issues with them I'll be ordering some new ones from either DIZ or Mouser.

I haven't really looked into max power yet, although I did see some youtube videos where they were putting well over 1KW thru it. I would think alot has to do with the SWR of the antenna without a tuner.

Supposedly the current units have the latest firmware, I guess I'll see that sometime this week too. That should actually happen before I put RF into it since I can power the PIC board without the tuner board connected.

I also got your direct email so I'll be sending a separate reply there shortly.

It is a Chinese kit with the SMD already mounted. I would be very happy
to receive the instructions! My email can be found on QRZ as W1LJ.

Since you have built one, mind if I ask a couple of questions?

1) Did you toss the Chinese toroid cores and buy new US-made ones? I've
read that the Chinese core materials are NOT the same quality nor the
same permeability as the USA specification ones.

2) Did the unit work straight away after you built it, or did you have
to upgrade the firmware, or do any other modifications to make it
function properly?

3) How much power have you put through it ? I'd like to use it on FT8 at
a maximum of 400W output. The general rule is that an auto tuner can
handle approx. 1/3rd of it's SSB/CW rating when used on FT8. The later
ATU-1000s were supposedly upgraded to a 1.5 kW SSB/CW rating from the
original EU2AV design, which used less ferrite in the inductors. Any
comment on that?

Thanks for your help!
