Re: Seeking Mural Policy Examples from University Campuses

Hi Anna,

?

At Long Beach City College, we just finalized the process of installing a new mural on campus. It was our first public art commission as public art committee, and I would be happy to chat about our process. It was not easy!

?

We had a budget of $30,000 for the artist that included materials, insurance, scaffolding and an artist stipend. We had students involved in the design, as well as in the painting of the mural. They had to provide proof of Osha certification for handling hazardous materials, which was easy to assign. We also had a great art collective to document the process of creating the mural which you can see the result. Student also helped write the education booklet for the artwork. We worked closely with the college¡¯s leadership, facilities, and risk management for many months to create a template for a public art commission.? We learned that starting with a mural was more challenging than doing a sculpture or other public art commission.

?

I would be happy to provide more insight into our open call process, student surveys, artist contact, etc.

?

You can see the final mural here:

Hello Colleagues,

I¡¯m hoping some of you might be willing to share your university¡¯s campus mural policy.

Our Public Art Committee is exploring the possibility of launching a mural program, and we¡¯re eager to learn how other institutions are approaching this¡ªwhat¡¯s working well, and what to watch out for.

If you have documents, insights, advice, or even cautionary tales, I¡¯d be truly grateful for anything you¡¯re willing to share.

With thanks in advance,

Anna
