Accessible Reading Level for Curatorial Content?

Dear Colleagues, I¡¯m reaching out for your insights and any resources you¡¯d be willing to share. Have you developed any guidelines or rubrics that help determine and shape appropriate reading levels for curatorial content? We¡¯re working to ensure that all public-facing text, from web pages to interpretive wall labels, is truly accessible to the wide range of audiences we serve and written to the appropriate reading level. We've always said our Museum aims for a high school reading level, but my initial online research into literacy stats suggests most Americans today read below a 6th-grade level. What grade level does your museum aim for? One of our key challenges is balancing this goal with the preferences of guest curators, who often favor more complex or academic language. Our aim is to make interpretive materials inclusive, engaging, and readable¡ªwithout oversimplifying or diluting their meaning. We'd love to link our policy to industry best practices. And while we¡¯ve found AAM¡¯s Accessible Communications Guidelines helpful for general messaging, we haven't come across similar guidance specific to curatorial or interpretive content: https://www.aam-us.org/2021/07/01/accessible-communications-guidelines/. Are there any industry best practices out there? We¡¯ve also been exploring tools like the Hemingway App (https://hemingwayapp.com/) to evaluate reading level. Has anyone used this¡ªor other readability tools¡ªin a museum context? Any frameworks, examples, or editing strategies that have helped make your curatorial interpretive content more accessible would be greatly appreciated. Hello All, With the new fiscal year coming up, we are looking at all aspects of where our money is going. A large part of the Collections budget is designated for the Collections Database Software. We are currently using EmbARK by Gallery Systems, but we are curious as to what other softwares people are using? Particularly in the American Academic Museum settings. And, if you wouldn't mind sharing, what is your opinion of your software? Do you like it? Are you also looking to change? What software systems/companies are you looking into? New Traveling Exhibition - Maya Gurantz: The Plague Archives
Hello colleagues across the AAMG network, The de Saisset Museum, Santa Clara University is excited to announce that we will soon start traveling our current exhibition Maya Gurantz: The Plague Archives and we hope you will consider this interdisciplinary exhibition for your audiences. The Plague Archives offers the opportunity to bring to your venue a site-specific installation comprising multiple video projections and a dense collection of archival material on the social, cultural, and political histories of epidemics and outbreaks. Predominantly spanning the tenth through the twenty-first century, The Plague Archives presents a multi-layered transhistorical and intercultural discourse on the shifting attitudes and definitions of disease. In addition to archival reproductions, found footage, and films created by artist Maya Gurantz, there are two interactive stations that can be reconstructed and reimagined for your space ¨C the Tracing Board encouraging viewers to map images from the Plague Archives onto the surface and the Sounds of Syphilis listening station featuring vinyl records guests can play to hear the late works of composers who experienced tertiary syphilis. The exhibition is ripe with opportunities for interdisciplinary programs and performances, among them The Dancing Plagues performative lecture-demonstrative by artist Maya Gurantz¡ªwho is also available to lead disciplinary-specific tours and workshops. Additionally, the exhibition presents an opportunity for curatorial intervention as it can be tailored to the host institution through the addition of archives and images. There is a nominal fee to host all components of the exhibition and pro-rated fees are available for those who select individual sections. Attached please find the prospectus with full details. Call for Applications Archives Research Fellowship Program at The Driskell Center The David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland invites applications for its 2025¨C2026 Archives Research Fellowship program. Designed to support original scholarship rooted in the Center¡¯s rich archival holdings, the program offers two low-residency fellowships over the academic year. Each fellow will receive a $3,000 stipend, paid in two installments, along with travel and lodging support for a short-term residency of up to three weeks at the Center. We welcome applications from scholars, artists, and cultural workers whose work engages with Black art, art history, and visual culture. About The Archives The Driskell Center Archives houses a growing collection of primary source materials across thirteen distinct collections documenting the lives, work, and critical reception of African American artists, scholars, and cultural institutions. Notable holdings include the personal papers of artist and scholar David C. Driskell¡ªfeaturing six decades of correspondence, lectures, exhibition planning documents, and ephemera¡ªas well as archives from the Weusi Artist Collective, artists Alonzo Davis and robin holder, art historians Tritobia Hayes Benjamin and Michael D. Harris, and arts administrator Terrie Rouse-Rosario. The Center¡¯s archives contain correspondence, photographs, audiovisual materials, press clippings, and ephemera related to the history of Black art. The Center also maintains a non-circulating research library of over 5,000 volumes, including many rare exhibition catalogs. Together with its permanent collection of artworks, these resources support interdisciplinary research in art history, African American studies, visual culture, and museum studies. Eligibility The fellowship is open to scholars, artists, curators, and cultural workers at any career stage, including graduate students (ABD), early-career researchers, and independent scholars. While the fellowship is open to U.S. and international applicants, travel reimbursement is limited to domestic travel within the United States. Native American art: One-Term Teaching & Curatorial Opportunity
Washington and Lee University¡¯s Department of Art and Art History and the Art Museum and Galleries are reviewing applications for a one-term Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History for Winter 2026. Calling for AAMG Conference Volunteers!
Primary Needs: We are looking for approximately 15-20 volunteers for the run of our conference to help us cover all that we have going on. All volunteer positions are first come, first served and will be finalized by June 1. If you have any questions, please don¡¯t hesitate to reach out to aacademicmg@.... On Site Volunteer: You plan to be present at the conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and wish to volunteer in one of the following capacities for the 2025 Annual Conference: ¡°Registration Rep¡±: work the main desk greeting people, answering questions, and getting registrants welcome materials, will cover the main desk for time banks of 2-3 hours throughout the conference ¡°Social Sage¡±: contributing to the AAMG social accounts for the run of the conference by posting about your experience, highlighting events, and engaging with other members on the platforms ¡°Photo Pundit¡±: capturing active photos of members engaged in conference activities ¡°Headshot Helper¡±: This year we will have a headshot station for people to utilize - if you¡¯re a photographer, this might be the gig for you to help our amazing AAMG Coordinator run this station throughout the conference ¡°Time Tellers¡±: help rooms stay on track with their starting and ending times, keep speakers from running over into breaks or next sessions, and assist in the presentation rooms After the close of conference, all volunteers will be asked to take a short survey detailing their conference and volunteer experience.
