There’s a lot of non-AA approved AA history I think after all the work that was put into this it should get published

Well, since "conference approved " specifically means that the conference has agreed to pay for it and distribute it through AAWS Publishing,? this manuscript being "unapproved" could simply mean that the GSC didn't want to pay for it. It doesn't necessarily mean that there's anything wrong with it.

It is called the "AA Grapevine"
"
  • Early AA groups adopted the AA Grapevine as the international journal of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1946. The General Service Conference reaffirmed this designation in 1986.?

CONFERENCE ADVISORY ACTION, 1986:
"SINCE EACH ISSUE OF THE GRAPEVINE CANNOT GO THROUGH THE CONFERENCE-APPROVAL PROCESS, THE CONFERENCE RECOGNIZES THE GRAPEVINE AS THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS."

  • The AA Grapevine is produced by a staff of professional editors, writers, and artists, who are members of AA. Most of the articles are written by members of the Fellowship.

I use it a lot as reference. I have read that it was not approved because of "errors" which I don't know if that means it had information different from the approved literature.?

It really is detailed with great history and stories.

Thanks

Re: File /Books/The History of AA by Bob P (GSC unapproved).pdf uploaded #file-notice

Just needed to share your unapproved comment jumped out at me.? At an area literature workshop I had the pleasure of meeting a former trustee who had been involved in the 4th edition process. About 5 years.? He told us that not being AA approved is not AA disapproved.? AA approval is a long involved possibly expensive process.? Not meant for everyone.? Some of the older books written by friends of Dr. Bob, some with his input now belong to Hazendon because of financial constraints for the writer.? So not necessarily disapproved just not been thru approval process.?

Locked Re: AA history lovers development updates and announcements sticky thread.

Our first deep discussion chat room has been created where hopefully we can get together and find all of the so-called 'dark promises' in the Big Book. Looks like an exciting project to me!

Just click the chats icon that looks like a telephone and you'll see it.

Thank you! Let's put reply messages in the chat room itself if you click on the chats icon you'll see the chat room that was created for this. It's sticky, therefore anything posted to it will remain in perpetuity. :)

I'll lock this topic for now and sticky it since it has instructions on where to find the chat. This new platform has a lot of great features so it's probably about time we start using some of them to really dig into AA history some more.

Let's use this chat to find and make a list together of the "dark promises", meaning: warnings and flat-out statements of what could happen to us when we don't work the program. For purposes of this discussion how about we start at the title page and cut it off at page 181? Anything between those two parts would be fair game. I'll start with one:

BB page 70:

"If we are not sorry, and our conduct continues to harm others,?we are quite sure to drink. We are not theorizing. These are facts out of our experience."

So, why don't we search the book together and find them all? :) We can use this thread to do it or I can create a chat for it.

Actually, it's exactly that this kind of thing the chats could be best used for in my opinion. I'm going to create a chat for it. Let's have some ummmmm... "ominous" fun with this ;-)

Re: The Dark Promises

I started a meeting a few years ago in CA with sponsees meeting is called, "Promises Prayers Instructions and Warnings" (and have since started one here in Myrtle Beach).? Originally Warnings was Black Promises (we thought that was original).? We study from 0 (the blank page to 160 two paragraphs at a time identifying and hiliting PPI&W's .
As Thom mentioned and I can confirm the first 164 is chock full of Black Promises (read Warnings; also full of Promises Prayers and Instructions).

Re: The Dark Promises

Page 66 - A BB workshop I went to referred to 7 "death threats" between the 3rd & 4th columns of the Resentment Inventory. Along with what I also call "the bedevilments" on p. 52 -- Is this part of what you're referring to?

I think there may be more than 12, although that # is in keeping with the recurrence of the # 12 in the BB.?

Re: The Dark Promises

I've actually never heard that quote called that, doesn't mean it isn't accurate, it only means I haven't heard of it. In the various parts of the country and world that I've been to and honored ti attended meetings in, that section of the book is always called something similar to or equal to "the bedevilments".

That being said, the book is, however, littered with promises that are indeed ominous; warnings and promises of what will happen to us if we don't do certain things (because those things are what had happened to them of course; it is a book of experience after all). I've never made a list of these on their own (yet?) but I do know that they're there. Could that be what you're referring to? Or are you referring to this passage on page 52?

She is sometimes identifiable by what recovering alcoholics call the “dark promises,” symptoms of alcoholism that are detailed in Alcoholics Anonymous' Big Book: “We were having trouble with personal relationships, we couldn’t control our emotional natures, we were prey to misery and depression, we couldn’t make a living, we had a feeling of uselessness, we were full of fear, we were unhappy, we couldn’t seem to be of real help to other people.” (Susan Cheever)

The quote is from "We Agnostics", p.52

Glastenbury information

?

I have attached a map of the townships of Shaftsbury and Glastenbury, Vermont.

?

Ebby stated that he stayed with Rowland Hazard in the town of Shaftsbury.? (EBBY, THE MAN WHO SPONSORED BILL W., page 59.) ??

?

I always had the idea that Rowland resided in the Sugarbush cabin in Glastenbury. ?

?

The following paragraph may explain:

?

?In 1937, the State of Vermont officially removed the Glastenbury Township and incorporated all the area into the legal town of Shaftsbury. However, the large area is still identified as Glastenbury on official maps. (ROGERS BURNHAM, THE ORIGINAL MAN BEHIND BILL W., by Leslie Cole. -- page 87).? Apparently, according to the map, there are no roads up to the Glastenbury cabin, Sugarbush. It must have been a 6 -to 8 mile mountain-hike to Shaftsbury township. ??
