It contains all of the files that are in the unpacked directory also hosted on AAHL. I only ask that you PLEASE do not break up this distribution or modify it. PLEASE keep the files together if you share them. That's all I ask. I worked very hard on this. Please do not modify it. In that way, IF there are any issues people know who to come to-- me. And then I can help or deal with them accordingly. :) Description: On this, the 25th Anniversary of the 1995 AA International Convention in San Diego, CA I offer to you this, the box set of digitized tapes and scans of same that I purchased at that convention 25 years ago. Anything strange you may hear is on the tape itself and will clear up. Just stick with it! I offer this as a gift to everyone in "AA Everywhere - Anywhere" that would like to experience the convention as I have experienced it, by attending many of the same meetings and workshops that I did a quarter of a century ago. On this, the 25th Anniversary of the 1995 AA International Convention in San Diego, CA I offer to you my complete box set of digitized tapes and scans of same that I purchased at the San Diego, CA AA International?convention 25 years ago.

I share with you the convention as I experienced it, through the recordings of many of the events that I attended. Of particular note is "AA Meetings and Computer Networking" which discusses early AA online history (yes there WAS online AA before "Zoom" ha!) and I am honored to be able to say that I was a big part of same. I was a member of many of those early online groups and started participating in the late 1980's (and I still am a member of them all in my heart regardless of whether or not they have faded into AA history). I was involved going all the way back to Fidonet, IRC, Usenet, GEnie, Compuserve, AOL, ICQ, The Source, Dow Jones, e-mail (of course), phone, text, instant messengers?and chat apps? and MANY other platforms and ways that the AA message was already being carried digitally. I can honestly say that I have been working AA in parallel, both online and in-person, my entire sobriety.?

And yes, going?forward I will be bringing much more forward from those days, for those here who might be interested in the evolution? of what I call "Digital AA".

But today is a celebration. We are at the very moment, as I write this, 25 years ago that the "Opening Big Meeting" of the 1995 Convention was taking place. What an incredible experience! But don't take my word for it, listen to it yourself, as it is included in this box set of my experiences.

It is a true honor to be able to share these memories with you. This box set, by the way, was one of the only archive pieces to survive a house fire my wife and I endured on February 6, 2017. Most of my archives were reduced to ash, melted plastic and rubble. The fire broke out while we are at an AA meeting, no less. But I have since been able to replace many things anyway and my digital archives DID survive so it is what it is. But somehow? This box set was sitting? in a pile of ash, in excellent condition. I found it in the pile on my very last spot-check pass through the pile of ashes, somehow?protected and unharmed even tough literally everything around it on all sides was totally destroyed. A God shot, perhaps? Well, you certainly would not convince me otherwise.

The box set survived and now, 25 years later, these previously unavailable?recordings are now available?to the world again. I hope you enjoy them.

Technical notes: Any anomalies in the recordings are technical limitations of the original recordings. I assure you, the utmost care has been taken in transferring these old tapes. Anything strange you may hear is on the tape itself and will clear up. Just stick with it!

I offer this release, now hosted and sponsored by AAHL on groups.io, as a gift to everyone in "AA Everywhere - Anywhere" that would like to experience the convention as I have experienced it, by attending many of the same meetings and workshops that I did a quarter of a century ago. Presented by AAHL as a gift of love and service to all. These recordings must NEVER be charged for but may be freely shared. Please link back to AAHL or at least mention us if you do, though. We're trying to be of service to historians and archivists, everywhere, anywhere. Yours In Service, Thom R. Current AAHL Moderator at groups.io

For those who would like to download this as a complete "Zip archive", I will also upload it separately in that format, as one file.?

Enjoy, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the San Diego, CA International Convention-- the largest AA convention? ever to be held so far, together.?

Oh and PLEASE, if you attended the convention, please share anything you may have from? it, be it memories, pictures, documents (still looking vor the program for it), in the thread that has been started.

Enjoy!

In Love and Service,

Thom R.
Current Moderator, AAHL on groups.io

AA San Diego 1995 - 25 years ago TODAY

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thank you Steve for sharing your exciting experiences at the 1995 International Convention at San Diego. ??Six of us flew out from the Richmond, Indiana, area and by the luck-of-the-draw I landed on the 15th floor of the Marriott Hotel that was actually connected to the Convention Center! Better yet , the balcony overlooked the bay with yachts to view directly below. ?The rest of the Richmond crew also settled in nice rooms in the same hotel.

?

I was the first to arrive in my large room with two King-sized rooms all to myself¡ªI was indeed living like King Farouk! However, the next night ??here came the many others from Los Angeles (Where had I lived for years) to share the room with me. This not only filled not only both beds but much of the floor! That was okay, but most of them snored so loudly that King Farouk found it necessary to sleep out on the balcony the rest of the stay.? Thank you, God¡ªbig joke! Ha.

?

One of the highlights was to shake hands with Nell Wing (Bill¡¯s long time Secretary) with whom I had previously corresponded. Also, met Earl Marsh, MD (Physician Heal Thyself), and of course it is always a delight to hear Clancy speak¡ªthis time it was the Traditions. I also posed with a big Big Book (attached)

?

Also, I was introduced to a lady from Washington DC who was also a BB thumper; this opened the door for many invitations to speak at DC, Delaware and Baltimore over these last 25 years.

?

Great times! Thanks for the reminder.

Hello Thom, and thanks for the flashback!? San Diego was my first ever International, and my first "AA vacation." I'd been to several AA roundups near my home-at-the-time in Kansas City, but this would be a whole new experience.? I remember landing at the SD airport, and seeing banners all over the terminal with the International logo - nothing identifying it as AA, of course - and my surprise when there were people standing in Conference t-shirts shouting out "WELCOME TO **SAN DIEGO!"? It was the same feeling I'd had the year before, arriving at Dr. Bob's house, and seeing 12 members on each of the 12 steps shaking hands and saying, "Welcome home..." It brought me to tears.

?

There are hundreds of memories I could share - but the first of two that stood out was seeing one of the book sellers who had closed up for a break, coming back to find a whole bunch of his inventory gone - seems the convention goers had just helped themselves.? He was racing around his little stand, looking for stuff, when we stopped and asked if he needed help and if he was OK, he said, "I thought I'd been robbed - but I found a book bag - stuffed with cash!" From what he could tell, the cash was considerably more, it seemed, than the stock he was missing.? I remember him smiling, holding this bag of cash, and saying, "I wouldn't have believed it, but I think I'm ok..."

?

The second, and more enduring one, was walking from what was the Pan-Pacific Hotel a short ways to the Convention Center.? There were trolley tracks that were being guarded by police (lest any of us step out and get run over), so we were waiting for the trolley to pass.? I spoke to the poor policeman, who was in black shorts, black short-sleeve uniform shorts, and black sneakers, in the bright San Diego sun,? and it was clear he was tired and HOT.? I said to him, "You and your city have been so gracious to us, and we're thankful for that - but I'll bet you're ready for us to get the hell out of your town, aren't you?"? He lit up in a nearly-ear-splitting grin, laughed, and said, "HELL no, sir!? You guys go home, get some more money, and you all come right back here!? As convention people go, you folks have been better than the Republicans, better than the Democrats, better than the Baptists or Catholics or even the American Library Association!! We LOVE having you people here!? Can you imagine what it's like for POLICE to have 80,000 people in and out of Jack Murphy Stadium, three times, and no drunk driving accidents?!?? No sir, in my book, you people are welcome ANYTIME!"? We all had a good laugh, the gates went up, he waved us on in blessing and farewell, and we went on to the convention center.?

?

THAT - seeing the impact that more than 55,000 AAs, and 24,000 Alanons, Alateens and their families, had on one policeman, spoke volumes about the collective recovery in the 12-step programs on that city.? It made me proud to be a sober member of AA, in a whole new and powerful way.

Re: When did the 9th Step Promises become AA's Promises?

When i came to AA in June 1985 i really don 't remember them being read at meeting. I know for a fact that they were not read at my homegroup. Seems like the in the 90's you started to hear them at more meetings and by 2000 they seemed to be accepted as something? you read at meetings. I have never cared for them since I think it makes people think these thing will start as soon as you quit drinking..? They never say that they are talking about themat Step 9. well that iss my two cents worth. I scanned the page from The Book That Started It All and the 4th edition of the BB. The firsts one si hard ot read and i don't see them be counted like the Steps and the second can be read. Thanks , Bob Hickey

Re: ¡°Our AA General Service Center-The Alcoholic Foundation of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.¡±

Mike,

I may have it. The copy I have, however, does not seem to have a date. The full title page is OUR A.A. GENERAL SERVICE CENTER, THE ALCOHOLIC FOUNDATION OF YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW by Bill.

Part one has 21 pages, part two has 11 pages and part three has 10 pages.

All of these pages are double spaced.

The pages are actually included within a leather bound book and are part of a collection of papers reputed to be those that were in Bobbie Burger's estate. The blue leather copy has the title "A.A. History of General Service." The origin of the book is the Oklahoma archives who created it in 1990. How these papers got to Oklahoma is beyond me, but Bobbie's whereabouts after her exit from Headquarters in June of 1949 remains a mystery. Curiously, her last name Burger is misspelled as "Berger" on the front cover.

Re: When did the 9th Step Promises become AA's Promises?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I got sober in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1984 and my recollection is that the promises were being read at that time around here.? Of more significance to me regarding the promises is that if you look at ¡°The Book That Started It All¡±, the working manuscript of the big book published by Hazelden, you will see that the promises were in a different form¡they were like the steps¡Here is what WE did¡talking about their experience¡the promises were the same We knew a new freedom and a new happiness, we did not regret the past, no matter how far down the scale we had gone we saw how our experience¡and so on¡

?

I have always disliked the promises as they outline emotional goals (recovering alcoholics are people who expect a reward for having been given a gift ?)¡when written as the steps were written they are so much more meaningful¡I wish they had left them as originally written.

Good Day fellow AA Historians,

? ? ?This question may, in fact be a purely regional question as each group is autonomous.? I can only attest to portions of California and So. Florida where somewhere in the meeting formats, there is introduced for someone to read " The AA Promises".? These are, in actuality the 9th Step promises found on the bottom of Pg 83 and continued onto pg 84 of our text, 'Alcoholics Anonymous'.? I do not recall this being apart of my early sobriety, coming in 1995, but hear it often now in various parts of the country and meetings I have attended.

? ? Can I find out the earliest time other members may have heard this; where the 9th step Promises, became AA's Promises, negating the fact of ALL the promises written in our program of recovery, from various Steps Taken, as experienced by those that came before us?

? ? ?I guess the follow-up to this query would be to ask, by naming the 9th step promises as AA's Promises, with no or very little mention of the multitude of promises, possibly giving the impression that one needs to have taken an 8th and making amends in the 9th, to acquire the Ultimate of what AA has to offer?

? ? Personally, I was affected when I read the i "have a new employer".

Thank you all for you comments of experience.

Bill W reads Chapter 5

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Bill Wilson¡¯s reading below brings me to wonder when they were reading Chapter Five so differently in NY in days of yore??

?

When I was new in AA, and asked to read Chapter Five at meetings, I would ?accentuate certain words and phrases to get the ¡°real message¡¯ across, but mainly just to show how smart I had become! Fortunately, this practice was short-lived. ?I now I try to do this reading in black and white-plain vanilla¡ªnot to speak certain words/phrases louder or slower than seeming less important ones.? This link below has Bill Wilson reading Chapter Five in what I consider proper manner.

?

However, here are three things to notice¡ªquestions:

?

What word does he read differently in the first paragraph?

What word does he read differently in Step Nine?

What does he not read at the end?

?

This is the link:? ?

?

In obvious humility,

There exists two schools of thought as to when Dr. Bob had his last drink and AA began.? ?June 10, or June 17, 1935.?? Hello Jim! This is Jim M., the original owner of . I am in the process of rebuilding my website under a new URL;??

I was also surprised that the AA History Lovers site was no longer online. I just received my new computer about 4 weeks ago. My other computer crashed on me a while back. Luckily, I was able to retain my original website files and I have purchased a new domain name in order to upload my site to the internet. I have finished correcting the source code enough to upload my site as it was before I turned my site over to someone else in early 2017 - something I regret now. Live and learn, right?

At any rate, I also have uploaded all of the messages from AA History lovers and you can find those messages on my site, at least the messages from 2002 to 2012.. I will add the rest of the messages; 2013 to 2016, that Glenn Chesnut sent me, as I continue to rebuild my site. Glenn also asked me to mirror his site, Hindsfoot Foundation on my site. I just wanted to provide you with a link to those messages I have uploaded so far. I believe that Glenn has the rest of the messages on his mirrored site on my site.

If you could, send my new site address to as many people you know who would be interested. The more people who has access to it and passes it on, the faster it will be able to be found by others in the Fellowship. I am still working on submitting my site to search engines (not as easy as it once was -at a loss so far). I have been working very hard on rebuilding my site every day since the day I got my new computer (about 4 weeks ago). Converting all the web pages throughout my site will take some time to do as I can only work with 1 page at a time. You will also be able to follow my progress in the rebuilding of my site. I created a page that lets folks keep up with my progress. The link title is, "Keeping you informed". That page gets updated every 2 to 5 days, depending on what page(s) have been updated. For instance, these 2 pages,??and??took me about 3 days for each page because of their complexity and detail in coding the pages. Many other pages can be updated quickly. Just have to do 1 page at a time, 1 directory at a time, 1 day at a time.

So, here is a link to the messages, my index page and Glenn Chesnut's site. I had to update a lot of Glenns files in order for his site? to appear on the web as he intended it to appear to the visitors. I still have a lot of work a head of me; converting every page throughout my site.. I worked very hard about the last 4 weeks or so in order to make the changes on all the web pages enough to warrant uploading my site for now. Don't want to write a book here, so here are a few links;

Pass it on...

Hope this helps,
Warmest regards,
Jim M.

    Yes Thom,

Perhaps just publish one of these AA history articles each week ?for maybe twenty weeks, then add the ones I will send to AA History Lovers as time passes. Some of these articles might prompt a new range of discussion.

Thank you, this is exciting! My next question would be, would we be able to host the complete (and ongoing) set here? If, for example, you sent me all of them in whatever individual format you have them in, I'm guessing probably PDF but I can deal with anything, I would create a folder in our file section with your name on it and we could just keep them all there for people to browse, download and learn from.

Whenever you publish a new one simply posted to the regular AHL and I'll make sure that the PDF gets added to the files section as well.?

This is truly brilliant work and I would love to do this for everyone.?

Would that work for you or do you have some other idea? Of course I'm open to any suggestions on whatever is convenient and comfortable for you.

    Thank you!?

    Best,?
