I would like
to point out that the strength of a beam depends mostly on its
height. Roughly the strength changes by the square of the
height, so doubling the height quadruples the strength. So if
you added a 1.5" box tube to the bottom of a 3x1.5" beam, it
would be 4.5?/3? stronger or over twice as strong and stiff. The
web adds very little to the strength of a beam since it is in a
neutral stress area, neither tension or compression.
I would like
to do this and move the axle lower, but we really don't have a
problem, yet.
