?Mary did not try to listen in on the conversation, but kept a close watch on the door of the guest room as she performed her other duties, when the master, mistress and their guest left the room, she would go inside, remove the dishes, and clean the room. ? ?She caught sight of the ?exhausted looking woman that had been the guest, entering ?her room. ? ?She finished sweeping one corner of the hallway, then walked up to the door, and lightly tried to open it, but finding that it was locked, she left it for the time being; she knew that usually, when one found a locked door to a room, it meant the occupant of that room did not wish to be disturbed, unless the servants were previously instructed to enter and bring something, in which case she would have knocked,?as she did with Rena and Henry earlier. But no such instructions had been given, so Mary left the room alone.
?
?Once the guest room was empty, she would clean it, then, having gotten the requested clothes for Rena, and assuming that the lady of the house would come or call for her when she desired the clothing, Mary would then go to her own room, and fall into bed. ?
