Leti hadn't slept a wink and she waited as late as she could, just past daylight before finally breaking and walking through the city to the doctor's home. She felt dreadful doing so in spite of her terror. He had just given her his address, and for a party at that, and here she came bothering him...but she didn't know what else to do. Her feet dragged, because she knew she was likely to walk herself right out of that party invite she'd so looked forward to, but there was nothing for it.
?
?
Perhaps she should've told her brother of the trouble she was having, but that just didn't feel right. She fussed with the ends of her auburn hair as she slowly approached the ground home, a pit growing in her stomach. The doctor and his lady had been all smiles and friendly words the night before but would they be so friendly in the morning light, especially so early.? There was simply nothing to do but to get it done with she told herself firmly and lifted the heavy brass knocker letting it fall several times.

Pool had been sleeping soundly when suddenly, something broke through that comfortable blanket of sleep; was he dreaming? He slowly open his eyes, was that¡, Yes, it had to be, it was a knock??on the door of Dr. Henry¡¯s home. ? ? ?At the same time, he heard a knock on his, door; Pool? Pool, wake up! It was Mary, and she was standing outside his door, knocking and calling his name. There is someone at the door, Pool, and as far as I know, you are still the Butler. ? ? ?So much for sleeping late, the butler grumped?to himself, as he hurried to dress as best he could at so early of a time. Henry and Rena?had promised him that he could sleep late the following day, but of course they did not know that someone would come knocking at their door so early the next morning. ? ? Run along, and get dressed yourself, he told Mary. Once they were both dressed, they met outside the door of their rooms, and Mary asked, so why do I have to get dressed, ?you are??the Butler, and what does that have to do with me? Because, pool replied, you might be called upon to prepare something; we must go and see now what this guest wants. ? As they hurried along, pool spoke softly, Mark my words, Mary, this is the folly of staying up late at night; it is infinitely better for one to retire early, so that he or she may be prepared to rise early to greet whatever circumstances the new day brings. ? As Pool slowly opened the door, he noticed the young lady, looking rather distraught, at least to his way of thinking. He?? ?wondered to himself why someone would be so upset at this time of day. He kept his voice calm?as he greeted, good morning, my lady,?what brings you out this fine morning, and how may we be of service to you?
God loves you.

"I...I need to see Doctor Enry, please," Leti said.
?
Her gaze was apologetic, gaze sliding away in embarrassment. She'd never spoken to fine butler before. Even such servants were educated and from schools for whatever they had to learn. She felt worn down cand shabby, though her dress, though not fine by any means, was made of decent cloth and not in disrepair. She did look like the working girl she was, not overly poor, but not accustom to fine living either and her speech was obviously cockney.
?
"Please tell him that I am very sorry..so sorry to have disturbed im so early, but it's important, you see...And it should be said to him in private...Well that bein' him and his lady, of course, not just him alone," she added hastily, feeling quite miserable and that she was making an awful mess of this.
?
"I'm Leti..He'll want to know who's callin' I'm sure..."

Pool studied the young lady, looking her up and down, not judging her by her looks, but rather, judging her by the things she said. ? ?He frowned,?thinking to protest that it was early, but she already made an apology for that; his?frown deepened when she spoke of needing to speak to him in private, but it dissipated when she acknowledged his lady as well, and said she would speak her matter to both of them. He?? ? considered asking her several questions, such as how well did she know the doctor, was she a patient, etc.; but he had been taught in school since he was just a boy, to always be precise in what he said, even in the questions which he asked. The? ? general rule was, never ask?three or four questions, when one would do just as well. ? ?I must warn you, ? ?Pool began, that the doctor may not be so amiable to hear your case at such an early hour, not saying he won¡¯t be, mind, just something for your consideration. Are you certain, ma¡¯am, that your cause?cannot wait until a more suitable hour of the day? ? ?I am¡, Afraid he was, awake quite late the previous night.
God loves you.

Leti's became wild with her inner panic at the thought of putting this off any longer but with a brief pause as she struggled to contain herself, she resolved to proceed.
?
"I'm afraid it would be wise if I spoke with them now...I simply can't explain more, but please tell in it's very important else I'd not disturb them. Please let them know I am aware of and regret?the early hour, Sir."
?
As she spoke, slender hands pressed themselves into her skirts. She had to struggle not to grasp fistfulls of the fabric in her distress.
?
If only he blasted man hadn't accosted her and mucked about with her memory, however he had done it! Because now she was likely here ruining the most interesting prospect in her life. The doctor and Miss Rena would be disappointed and they would likely turn her away before she could warn them of...well she didn't even know what.

Pool continued to study her, noting how she struggled to contain herself, giving a slow nod when she said that it was wise for her to see Dr. Henry now. ? ?Giving a soft sigh,?Pool at last gave his acquiescence; very well ma¡¯am, seeing as how I have sufficiently warned you of incurring his displeasure, I shall now go and see if he will except your visit at this early hour. With that, the well educated Butler slowly turned, wait here, please ma¡¯am. With that, he headed into the house, and offering at present, no explanation to Mary, who nearly gave him a curious look, ?Pool made his way to the bedroom of the master and mistress. This has really ruined my mornings sleep, he thought to himself, as he gave a??cautious knock on the door.
God loves you.
|
Leti nodded and murmured her thanks, wanting to apologize yet again and knowing it would solve nothing. As she miserably waited, she struggled not to drop her face into her hands. She knew she should've waited but this wasn't normal, it was not well and something inside of her screamed at her to take? action NOW. She knew?the sleepless night she'd had as a result may not be helping her judgment but there was nothing for it.

Henry Hyde was having some fast dream, about strange trees enveloping him in their embrace and talking to him. Talking, ever talking...He realized with a start that he it was still pretty early. That he didn't have much sleep, and that somebody was knocking on his door. "What," Henry growled. He was not sure how he felt about the twisting trees and their murmurs, but he needed some damn sleep. He almost apologized, remembering that Rena must have been right there.
?
He had not detected her at first, forgot about her presence, possibly even considered her a pleasant dream. Who could blame him though when even his eyes refused to open, and his mind refused to work. "What now," Henry repeated, approaching the door. Opening it, he started at the man on the other side. "Is it an urgent call, Poole? I hope it is, for otherwise, I am going back to sleep!" he exclaimed but stopped himself from shutting the door again as was his instinct.
|
Rena gave a groan of protest at the knock on the door. They'd finally gotten to sleep and they were supposed to summon the acursed servants when they wanted them. She made another small sound of protest when an obviously and understandably sleepy and angry Henry disentangled himself from her embrace and removed his warm presence to open the door. Sitting up and clutching one of the blankets to her naked form, she grinned in amusement at Henry's extremely well shaped backside as he addressed his butler through the door. Amazing he didn't see how magnificent his own form was. She had even expected him to look more nondescript from the way he...as Jekyll had spoken of himself prepotion as she thought of it.?
?
?
As the haze of sleep cleared her mind a bit, a thread of panic shot through her. She hadn't gotten to explain yet to Henry of the danger they could be? in...What if it was already bloody knocking at the door somehow?

Pools expression showed regret when Dr. Henry opened the door and asked was it an urgent call. I am¡ I am, afraid that it is, sir, at least it appears to be. There is a young woman at the door, she says her name is, ?Leti,?and that she very urgently needs to speak with you and mistress Rena. ? ?I reminded her that the hour is early, and did my very best to dissuade her from pursuing this suit, whatever it may be; she told me that she knew the hour was early, but that it was a matter of post haste that she speak to you and Lady Rena?at once, as soon as it is convenient for you to speak with her. ? I again attempted to persuade her to pursue her cause at a??more convenient hour,?one more befitting and friendly to the both of you, but she would not hear of it¡, She insists, sir, that it is of upmost importance and urgency that she speak to you and Lady Rena?He paused, then asked, what shall I tell her, sir??She would not say, or even partially disclose the matter of her urgency.
God loves you.

Henry Hyde stared at Poole for a few seconds, bewildered. He had to process all of this. He did remember the Leti girl, she seemed to have an entirely different outlook on things. But..."I was half joking when I suggested she would..." he found himself unexpectedly speaking out?loud, and realizing he was about to say what Poole was not supposed to know. Of course if it really come down to her murdering Victor...He may have thought it a joke, but she, how would he covertly inquired about blood covering her clothes?
?
Realizing Poole should have informed him if it were THAT serious, Henry shrugged the idea off as him being still half asleep. Of course now he may have made the wrong impression with his careless words. "Nothing untoward of course, Rena was there with me, and it was all social and nothing else," he spoke unnecessarily, not sure who would be overhearing this and what rumors might spread as a result.
?
"So, I guess she did not tell you the nature of the emergency? I am afraid I am not very presentable right now. I will need a little while to prepare myself, escort her to the guest room in the mean time. Some refreshments, some entertainment of light hearted books, whatever she needs, we will be right there," Hyde concluded, finally with more decisiveness.
|
They were still half drunk and certainly had not gotten enough sleep. This was not good. And shit she had no clothes yet! Rena peered blearily around the still dim room for the clothes she did have as they were better than nothing. She would wrap up in the cloak again, as even if it looked odd, it would not show her legs which was apparently a thing in this day and age. Sighing she resigned herself to a day of discomfort before her mind moved to worrying about what ever could have brought Leti here now. She had promised to explain the clothing thing at the dinner party so what? Unless who ever had put her back here had noticed their befriending of the bar maid and taken an interest. That? served to wake her up a bit as a serge of adrenaline rushed through her body.
?
?
"Shit," she breathed under her breath before calling out to Pool.
?
"Yes, have her wait in the most private room for visitors there is and see to breakfast and coffee for all 3 of us, please. Once we are all together and served we re not to be disturbed for any reason."
?
The last thing they'd need was the bloody servants popping in to see if they needed refills. Whatever this was it could not be good.
I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed. I get along with the voices inside of my head.

Pool looked bewildered at all the speaking that Henry was doing, he slowly shook his head at the question, no sir, she would not disclose the nature of the emergency, only saying that it is in fact, urgent, and she needs to see you immediately. He nodded then as the doctor gave instructions, and also to those given by Rena. ? ? Very well, my Lord, my lady, Pool ?replied, ?I shall escort her to one of the guestrooms, used for only the most private of conversations, and I shall see you have refreshments as well. ? With that, he bowed to both of them, and left the room, closing the door softly behind him.
?
Mary, Pool said to the young serving girl, ?please prepare the East wing guest room, and serve breakfast and coffee, the master and mistress have a visitor. ? What? So early in the bloody morning, was Mary¡®s reply. Mysentiments exactly, dear girl, but it is such as it is, now please be about your business, I must go and attend upon this poor, distraught young woman, who seems to be in the most fragile state of mind.
?
Pool breezed by Mary with a briskNess and efficiency??that afforded no argument, and gave a great example of one who worked with no nonsense. ? He was soon back at the gate, Miss Leti, The master and mistress will see you shortly. They have instructed me to escort you to one of our guest rooms, used for the most honored guests, and the most private conversations. If you please to come with me, I will escort you there, and you may wait until the doctor and his lady appearance; if you please, follow me. ?He let her down many hallways, past the kitchen, where Mary and a few of the other servants were busily preparing breakfast, as well as making coffee. The smells of the food and coffee permeated the hallways, and the guest room. Here you are, my lady, pool stated, pulling out a chair for Letty.? ???
God loves you.
|
Letti nodded gratefully, murmuring her thanks and letting out a silent breath of relief that she'd not been dismissed without being herd. She needed to understand what had happened in the bar last night and she hoped the couple could explain it. Unbidden as he took a seat her mind returned to rena's shocking lack of clothing under that cloak. No wonder she'd kept it wrapped around herself all night as if cold!
?
?
And what was under it looked nothing like underthings neither. Leti glanced in awe around the fine room. The doctor's home was as fine as could be expected and made her feel dirty, common and worn. Glancing down at her dress of green embroidered flowers she straightened the skirt, feeling a rush of shame at the common cloth. She knew the dress was neither dirty nor tattered, but it rather felt both against the rich brocade of the straight back chair of ornately carved wood on which she sat.
?
Once alone her gaze dropped to her wrist. It still hurt and had the thin man's finger marks on it. Rubbing at it idly she waited pensively.
?
?
Upstairs, Rena cast about for her clothes, hoes and cloak as soon as the bedroom door was closed. No time to wait for the clothes she'd ordered Mary to? procure so it was going to have to be the cloak that covered her. She'd look odd but decent she thought with a resigned? sigh.
?
"I fear there is trouble," she told Henry as she dressed.
?
"I don't know what kind, but perhaps she'll bring answers. I...I did want to be here? with you, more than anything, but I arrived in an unexpected way. I meant to share with you last night then we were too drunk so it was to be this morning, only after? actual sleep," she lamented with a sigh, strapping her cell phone case to her thigh. It was the only proof she had other than her word and she'd need it to show both of them.
?
Once Henry was dressed she took his arm as they proceeded downstairs. Her need to touch him...a lot was still the same, an odd comfort. She found her? gaze traveling?regretfully over his body as they proceeded. If only they had a late morning together as she'd hoped for.
?
once in the room with Leti, Rena's gaze took the girl in quickly, gauging that the other young woman seemed unharmed.
?
"I've ordered breakfast and coffee as I figured we'd all need it, and privacy after," she said.
?
"What happened?"
?
Leti bit at her lip and glanced toward the door.
?
?
"I figure I should wait on that, but in part I don't exactly...know. I am so sorry for wakin' you both at such an hour but I was frightened."
?
Rena struggled not to groan and drop her face into her hands and instead nodded.
?
"I hate to say it but I relate...to the not knowing. But hopefully sharing information will help us shed some light on things."

?Immediately after Rena had finished speaking, there was a soft knock at the door, breakfast and coffee for you, Mary called. ? ?She slowly opened the door to enter, thinking that, since the breakfast had already been ordered, there was likely no need to wait ?to be granted entry. She entered first, carrying a huge tray with plates of eggs, bacon, bread, and cheese. Pool entered???after her, carrying a small pot of coffee, with cups, ?and Jean, another servant known for being extra quiet, came in with a large plate ?of??various fruit. The servants quietly placed there ?various trays?on the table, then went about, pouring coffee, and offering to serve anyone who would like breakfast. ? ?What will you have, ma¡¯am? Mary asked Leti ?first, since she was a guest. She then went to Rena,?and for you, my lady? Jean, meanwhile, was pouring coffee for Henry, and offering it to the others, while Pool ?offered fruit to anyone who desired it. He would await their responses before instructing the others, all right, come along, ?let us disturb the master, his lady, and their guest no further. ? There would again be just enough time for any responses, before the three servants ?bowed,?and??exited the room, ?to be seen no more during that time, unless they were called. If anyone wanted seconds on what was there, they would have to serve themselves.???? ???????
God loves you.
|
"We'll all? take some of everything. We'll need it," Rena said, speaking the final bit half to herself and trying not? to feel grim.
"Thank you all," she added, giving thee 3 servants a warm smile.
?
"Yes please and thank you," Leti echoed accepting some? of everything, and studying the fine dishes and lavish fair in awe while trying to? be casual about it and not to gape. She hadn't expected a fine breakfast when coming to disturb Dr. Henry and his lady. Part of her still wanted to cringe and await the sure to come explosion for someone such as she bothering them and miss using their address, but the open friendly way both of them behaved toward her had her truly doubting such would come. Neither the doctor nor his lady looked much better rested than she did and Lady Rena's hair was hanging down her back uncombed as she had obviously dressed in haste, but she wasn't angry or demanding to know why Leti would think it acceptable to show up this early...In one way Leti was relieved but in another...it caused a pit of dread to open in her belly. She best? fill it with breakfast, she decided dryly. If Rena wasn't surprised too greatly that she was here, that couldn't be good.
?
?
Once the servants were gone she took a breath, murmured her thanks while apologetically meeting Henry's eyes then began to tell her story. She spoke of how the ill looking man on which they had commented the previous night had called her over, roughly grabbing her wrist. She recalled how she couldn't remember a word of what he had said to her or the lady with him either. She explained how the next thing she recalled after his rough grip on her wrist snatching her toward him was walking across the bar with a tray of drinks for another table.
?
"Right in the middle of something I was and with no memory of it what so ever! That's never happened to me before, course else I'd not be here desturbin' your rest. Just it was right after you left he did somethin' to my head...So maybe it had to do with you somehow...I waas worried and scared and figured you should know...and...And I'd not mind knowin' what was done to me."
?
?
She bit at her lip, clasping her hands briefly in worry. She was always so careful to avoid men touching her in the bar. She'd gotten fast at dodging groping hands, but this one had touched her mind somehow and she didn't? like it one bit.
?
"You had both spoken of having a strange day I remember so...I don't know, if it could be related. Have you ever heard of such," she asked turning her gaze almost imploringly to Henry.

Henry Hyde did not like hearing that there were trouble. Well, if they were of medical or financial, or sexual kind, he could understand those and attend to them. But troubles in general, they left a sour taste in his mind and made his hands ball into fists. Rena's arrangements with the servants and Letti may have been splendid, worthy of the future lady of the house, but her unfortunate remark added to his already tense mood.
?
Yet, to his own surprise, the good mood began returning to Henry when the barmaid described the problem. It was somehow less alarming than he'd imagined it to be. More...intriguing might have been the word, as he recalled Dr Reynolds experiments in consciousness.
?
"Memories are curiously fleeting at times. A colleague of mine experimented with a girl named Rachel. He used the methods of some stage performers, hypnotists, who could mesmerize the audience, supposedly. Only he was able to do it from the inside, by stimulating an electrical charge...well never mind that. Only the girl Rachel completely forgot her?own name, her mother, her village. She remembered instead being somebody else, and being able to see...well, what she thought of as God. So, technically, I have heard of memories being completely lost. Truncated at a certain point, or lost completely. Your case is clearly not?as radical...The interesting thing is...what kind of an effort would be required to achieve such a feat.
?
My colleague, another medical doctor, of sorts, is a firm believer in hypnotism and that their methods could be improved?inside of a human body. But you would have remembered anything electrocuting you, it would have been accompanied by some pain. And yet, if you were ordered to forget?it...oh no, what am I saying, the touch of the hand could likely be used by a hypnotist as a sort of a signal. Yes, that would be much simpler. I think.
?
So,?dearest Leticia, it appears you might have a stage performer frequenting the Black Bess. How...unexpected. I thought your establishment was worthy enough, a little too dull perhaps. I may have been wrong. I am curious though. I suppose you do not recall performing any physical favors for the gentleman, so to speak?? Well, that would be too bold of him. No, we would simply need to confront him, make certain he does not consider such in the future. Not everybody can remain as pleasant of a company as myself after all. If he feels you could be enthralled, he would strike again. This may only have been the prelude,?an experiment to find out how susceptible you are, I fear. Yes, very unusual.
?
You are correct of course. My day yesterday was far from regular, the notes?I locked away in a drawer suddenly surfaced with additional comments added to them, and I do not like that turn of events one bit. There are social opponents of sorts, spies even, but who would even think to go to all the trouble to retrieve some unassuming notes. For that matter, who would even be aware of them? My servants, as well meaning as they may be, hardly possess the necessary skills to distinguish my failed experiments described in the notes from successful ones. Yes, it is all very puzzling indeed, but at least, your problem we could hope to contend with, nothing a few fists in the face would not resolve," Henry Hyde pleasantly reassured the girl,?finding himself oddly waking up in the wake of his rushing ideas.?????
?
|
As Dr. Henry gave his explanation,Leti's face showed flustered shock and horror, often times her slender hands fluttered up to cover her mouth as he spoke of a girl named Rachel forgetting her life and remembering someone else's instead. That much violation...was horrifying. Thus was the idea of what could've been done?to her.
?
"But why would he choose me and why the night the 2 of you came in," she sated thee most important question that she felt tied them to this situation potentially.
?
"Thank you," she said gratefully when he offered to return to The Black Bess and confront the man.
"hank you, Dr. Enry. I would feel ever so much better if we could make him account for himself."
?
?
When the doctor confessed his own strange day, Leti was surprised he'd share so much with her and felt a proud pleasure at that, and an odd excited sense of belonging to something exciting. Of being a part of something. She knew she was likely wrong but allowed herself to enjoy it anyway.
?
?
Rena's expression grew more and more worried as Henry spoke.
?
"Henry...The handwriting in your notes...the additions, was it at all like yours?"
?
Her gaze was worried as it rested on his face.
?
"Your eyes...they're a different color," Leti exclaimed.
?
"I swear last night they were black and now they're such? light blue they're almost white!"
?
?
Observant, Rena thought and smiled at the other young woman, nodding.
?
"Last night I wore something on my eyes to change the color. this is my natural color. I'll explain later. if you really care why but right now there are pressing matters. And this as well as everything else said here, I...we need you to keep to yourself in the strictest of confidence."
?
Leti nodded.
"Of course. I never heard n such to change a person's eye color," she marveled.
?
she nearly asked whatever for but then realized Rena had said she'd explain later so left it at that.
?
"If they added new steps or ingredients to your potion I'd not use them," Rena told Henry worriedly.
?
She sighed then and drew out her phone from the case strapped to her leg. Turning it on she drew in a deep breath.
?
"Okay...It's my turn but my issue is...well more complicated and will take longer to explain."
?
Looking at Leti she said,"I...I don't know if I had a memory issue or not but though I wanted very much to be with Henry I didn't intentionally come yesterday. I remember being in Amsterdam. I was dizzy, took a step forward, heard something like a wind tunnel, maybe stumbled and was outside the Black Bess. Not knowing what else to do I went in looking for him, and he was there."
?
Her expression showed relief at that memory.
?
"But how did you know he'd be there if you didn't know where you were," Leti asked.
?
"I'll explain but lets try to make this organized,"Rena said, feeling doubtful that? it would remain thus. Scrolling through her phone she leaned forward so both could see and opened a music file. Lithe wire by AC/DC began to play ass Bon scott sang.
?
With no electric guitars yet or aggressive singing styles, it was no surprise when Leti gave a start, moving back and nearly dropping a fork.

?When Rena thanked the servants, both Mary and Jean gave smiles of appreciation. Pool replied, it is our pleasure, mistress, if anyone of you needs anything else, you have only to call us. They served a little bit of everything to everyone, and here is the rest of the food, pool commented, here whenever you want it, we will humbly take our?leave now. They followed his example, and bowed to Henry, Rena, and Letty. ? ?Come along, Pool? instructed, let us with haste, away. They quietly exited the room, with the butler in the lead, followed by Mary, then Jean, making the entire ordeal look as if it were at least a small Sarah Moni. ?Once they had left the room, Mary inquired, I wonder what they will discuss in there? ? ? Pool gave a soft sigh,?then replied, ¡®tis ?none of our concern, at least at the present time, dear Mary, come, let us be about our own business. ? ?Mary frowned, then replied, better the simple affairs of the servants, then the sorted affairs of the Masters, I suppose. ? ? Jean shrugged then and stated, I¡¯m must?hints go and attend to the laundry; and I¡, Must go and make certain that the lady¡¯s?clothing is correctly matched, Mary stated. And I must go and see to the training of some new recruits, Pool replied, therefore let us away to our own business. ? Once Mary and Jean had gone, ? Gave a sigh, combined of tiredness and relief; it has been a long night, he thought to himself, and still you have had to be up early, trying to comfort this young lady, and then helping to prepare refreshment for the master mistress and their guest. Therefore, what crime is it now if you retire to your chambers, to bed, and let these other two work? It isn¡¯t as if you will be a sluggard all day; ? He glanced about as his thought process is continued, I do¡, Have new recruits to train and supervise, but they will not be here until later today, perhaps late this afternoon, and the mistress did promise me I could sleep in this morning, I have not yet gotten to make good on that promise, so, I shall away to attend to my¡, Owned business. With that, the butler slowly walked to his room, and once more, went to bed.????????

"That is a good question, I suspect," Henry Hyde slowly agreed. "I may not know the answer to it, unless your skills of observation became suddenly problematic. I did not mind them myself, but I had nothing to Hyde. The other gentleman, on the other hand, might have wished for something subtle that could incriminate him, be removed from your memory. Something only you would notice and other would not. So, although it might have something to do with us, it could also have something to do directly with you. Although, I cannot disagree that it is quite a coincidence.
?
Yes, don't mention it. We can go and confront him, and see what he has to say to his defense. What is it, Rena Dear, ah yes, the notes were done in my own hand writing style, or a good imitation thereof..." Henry mused while considering the ability to change one's eye color, as well as the necessity to do so. His new lady love seemed to have every bit as many intriguing secrets as himself, and that tantalized him to no end.?
