Re: What type of tool post?

Depending on the work, I can use either an OXA or AXA post

Variable speed motors

This may be a bit off topic, but I would guess it is applicable for someone wanting to re-motor their lathe.

Have one of those 80s Taiwanese drill presses (Cummins Mack).? Motor HP isn't listed but it's probably 1/2 or 3/4HP.? 100vac single phase.

?

Kind of sick of changing belts and thought one of those variable speed motor conversions would be helpful.? I read a lot about how inexpensive these are, but I'm just not seeing it.

?

I probably have 10 motors lying around the shop, all 110VAC single phase of various sizes and RPMs.? Looked around for something in the 3/4-1hp range in a 3phase motor on Craigslist, Marketplace, ebay, surplus dealers - they don't seem cheap to me.? To get something in the right RPM range (~1700) and standard voltage is at least $100 if not closer to $200.? Add another $100-200 for a VFD and that's not my definition of inexpensive.? New motors are double that.

?

Read about using a treadmill motor, but word seems to have gotten around about those.? They're in the same price range as the 3phase motors, although the controllers seem cheaper.? Buying a couple of random treadmills to hope and get the right size motor that's useable seems like a big PITA and here in rural America, getting rid of the rest of the treadmill without the motor isn't exactly easy or cheap.

Am I looking at the wrong things, or am I just a cheapskate?? Maybe both.

I've read it's possible to use a VFD on a single phase motor by bypassing the start capacitor using a start switch to energize it.? Having trouble finding good info on what VFD to use.? I don't really think I need the drill press to reverse, which is one of the downsides of single phase.? Would this be a solution to use the original motor or one of the spares I have lying around?

Re: What type of tool post?

I agree

I look the Multifix/Multifix back 1970's.?
Some operations I wish had.?
But taking a heavy cut the like the Aloris.
There is on setup I wish I had a American Tool post because it is thin.

If I was going to buy a new tool post today I would probably be buying a Multifix/Multifix clone from Create tool

If I was going to buy a new tool post today I would probably be buying a Multifix/Multifix clone from Create tool . Has I known about them when I bought the AXA I have on my South Bend I would have bought one instead of the AXA I purchased .

I'd like to pick up an OXA QCTP.

However, I ended up buying a few of the square tool posts from Grizzly like the one that came with the lathe.

That gives me potentially 12 pre-setup, pre-shimmed tools between the three of them.

Getting them all set up is kind of a PITA, but it was a quick and cheap solution.

Since he needs to go up only 1/2" you would not be able to get that short of offset without moving the radiator forward or back or raising it even with two 45 street ells.

Mike,

?

What you are dealing with is called an ¡°offset¡±.? The easy solution here would be to add two 45 degree elbows, street elbows, and/or the appropriate length nipples between the valve union and the new radiator.? This will allow you to adjust the offsets between the horizontal and vertical axes of the valve and the input to the new radiator to the exact dimension you need.? ???

?

Hope this helps.

My house is 99 years old, so your experience may be just about right. I need to replace a single-pipe steam radiator with a larger radiator that's now sitting on my back porch. But the steam pipe into the new radiator is about half an inch higher than the one into the old radiator. So I either have to remove the valve and raise it (always a risk with hundred-year-old pipes) or cut down the feet of the replacement radiator.? Which would you?recommend?

It's low-pressure steam, so I assume it's at 212 F.? ?The radiator are replacing was installed probably no more than 25 years ago to replace a bigger radiator. The rest should be doable if I can get the spud out of the old radiator.

Do you have any drawings on the www.homemadetools.net site?

I do get email from them too and look at projects.

The steel they made 100 years is different than today's . .
The threads in pipe will be difficult to remove most time. The good news most of the pipe dope was lead it helps.?
You may want to use dresser coupling on old pipe and try to remove from threads.?

What temperature does system work on.?
