Re: Hand-sharpening drill bits

Having a hard bolt break off in an automotive chassis application I knew it would be a problem. After making a guide bushing and clamping it in place I resharpened a masonry?drill left?handed. Running te drill in reverse and guided by the bushing I drilled through the bolt until?it grabbed and unscrewed the remains. Other methods have led to disasters!

Re: Hand-sharpening drill bits

I have a drill doctor 750x.? Uses a diamond wheel.? But most of my are high speed.? I need borazon.
So I found this at Travers -

There's a lot of knock offs online... It splits, adjusts from 85 to 140 degree and you can get CBN wheels for it as well as other parts:

And they have one for up to 1" bits.? A bit pricey but worth it.

And as I mentioned you can find knock offs
Grizzly -
$230 - and again its a CBN wheel

Amazon - $269 with both diamond and CBN

The big one is only $580

It was new, never used other than plugged in and it did not work (hence why i got it so cheap) The problem was a broken wire at the fuse holder. I do love a deal!

I started getting? disillusioned with it a few years back . A couple months ago I found a brand new wheel for it , I'm back to happy with it .

At the time I bought it the cost was ?17 but I see that it has since increased slightly in price. As the 8mm hole in the centre of the new hand-wheel had a keyway slot in it and it wasn't deep enough to used the mounting threads on the lead screw I mounted it on my metal lathe and bored and reamed the centre hole to 14mm. I then turned a T shaped steel spacer with a M10 thread in the centre that I press fitted into the 14mm hole and used Loctite to keep it in place. I then used a 1mm thick brass washer to separate? the hand-wheel from the mounting and used the conventional second nut to reduce the backlash in the compound and to lock the hand-wheel in place. The graduated dial is slightly larger than fixed base but for my use I don't think that this will be an issue.

The cross-slide has a similar problem with the graduations and I happened to have a larger ring with suitable graduations on it but the centre bore was too large to fit. As a result I left the existing small graduated ring in place and 3D printed a spacer that grips the small ring tightly and has just enough friction to retain the outer ring but to allow it to be moved if necessary.

Cross slide modifications

I have the cross slide from a mini lathe mounted on my small woodturning Rose Engine lathe. Re: Mini lathe motor temperature

Update on temperature gauge working great.?
It has been pass 111°F? [44° c] In the workshop which can work in at temperature.?
?
The few time I use the lathe I found gauge goes 3°C to 5°C when working on lathe.?
?
Today it was 82°F when first started the lathe gauge read 27°C finished it was 30°C
?
Very happy I have recorded that temperature so know goes up from 10°C? it time to clean the motor.
The carbon from brushes are forming a resistor and starting the heat motor up.? It took research to find that happens. I only in old manuals.?
