Re: to oil or not to oil, that is the question
You could probably even just use a wax (some do that on their woodworking tools).? But a very THIN film of oil, which is all you need, is not really much of a chip magnet. Charles E. "Chuck" Kinzer

Nothing wrong with that. Where do you get your paraffin? |
Re: Unwanted taper
You actually have to check both the HS and the TS alignment.
The HS spindle should be parallel to the bed, both horizontally & vertically. A 3MT test bar is the ideal tool, lacking one of those, a straight rod held in the chuck & tested at 90¡ã intervals will work. Don't be surprised if you have to remove the HS to clean & de-burr the mounting surfaces. Worst case is having to install shims to get the spindle axis parallel to the bed, horizontally & vertically. To align the TS, mount a straight rod between centers & use an indicator to get the TS aligned with the HS. Don't be surprised if the TS needs some work to get it vertically aligned. Salvaged guide rods from a discarded printer are nice, straight pieces of mild steel. I made an adjustable mounting? plate for my 3 jaw to get the chuck axis concentric with the spindle axis; once set, it stays that way over the chuck's grip range. Roy |

Arthur,
The spring ball oil fitting is installed only in the saddle casting , never in the ways. A small pilot hole for the oil port is drilled through the casting and then tapped the appropriate size. The ways get oiled when the pump oil can is seated squarely on the fitting and a squirt of oil is shot into the fitting. The fittings can also be on bushings that require oiling. Re: Unwanted taper
All lathe test never did head stock off.?
But there the first time.? Back 1980 there was Chinese lathe where bed wrap by ?" . The machinery dealer was try sell the lathe Great price too.? I found the tail stock off a lot.? Most time a easy fix.? I get very close and use morse tapper reamer.? Just lightly lock the quill and keep the close to reamer and tail stick close so quill has a very short stick out.? Dave? |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
Here¡¯s a lathe alignment guide:?? (Pretty sure gadgetbuilder¡¯s on the list) There¡¯s a couple chapters on doing this in the complete mini-lathe workshop book as well? I am guessing it is your tailstock, since you said it¡¯s between centers or the chuck and tailstock. If you find any junked inkjet or laser printers they have several accurate rods in them, usually pretty small in diameter but they¡¯re useful for checking stuff like this. Worn out hatchback lifts are also great sources for straight hardened rods. I¡¯ve had to replace them in a couple of mu cars and salvaged the worn out ones. --?

Re: A Great Bit of Craftsman Machining
There are several places.? Things are kinda busy at work now or I'd look for more. This video has two places:?? Start at 6:28 I've also seen them on the carriage to oil the ways, on the saddle to oil the gears on on the cross-slide/compound.
