Here photo of my old lathe with backslash.??
The photo is staged used for a ad.
I behide the camera and guy work for 20 years till he retire.? The back splash I made out of 12 gauge steel. Had the lathe for almost 30 years.?

The baking pans are lot cheaper and on shelf new or used.?

Re: Free-standing Splashguard?

A fabricated free standing splash guard doesn't have to be metal.? Cardboard was mentioned.? I would probably use a piece of Masonite.? But fairly thin MDF or plywood would be fine.

1/2 Size = 13¡± x 18¡±

Can also used as a chip pan too.?

Again, I just use cardboard as a large backsplash. If using a cooling system then it may not work.

Re: Grizzly is doing better - I hope!!!

The headstock alignment problem is easily?solved with a Morse-taper test bar.? (?).? I bought one several years ago and got my headstock into good enough alignment for anything I may want to do with my lathe.?

After you put the test bar in place, you check it with an indicator on the carriage in various places and shim the headstock until it's right.? And checking to be sure the test bar itself is correct is easy: roll it on a surface plate to ensure it's not warped, and indicate the end while rotating the spindle to make sure the taper is aligned correctly.

(And, yes, I know about the Rollie's Dad's Method and other schemes to check alignment without a test bar, but that's too complicated to do over and over and be SURE your did it right. Or at least it was for me).

As for dreaming of a better mini-lathe whose alignment you can be sure of, would you rather trust yourself to shim your headstock right or trust some guy in a factory in China who knows that the care he uses on any particular lathe won't add a single yuan to his pay packet? And if that guy could be encouraged to do a more careful job, how much more would you pay for that?? Thirty bucks for a test bar you may only use once seems a lot, but we've all spent that much on sillier things.

All other deficiencies are secondary and much easier to correct or live with.

I took my backsplash off when I added the X-Axis scale, so just let the wall behind my 7x16 catch any chips, then vacuum them up later (a lot of chips got over the backslash anyway, and it was a pain getting chips out from the space between the bed & backsplash anyway). did the same thing with his small lathes just to have better access.

I've used similar to this in the past an various machines.
They work well as long as you take into account of the backlash. People who have worked machine do this without thinking.

I have wondered about the accuracy of this sort of arrangement.? ? A clean setup - probably ok for some work - and necessary to use care when needing best accuracy.

Re: SPEAKIN BOUT FUSES

Replacing a fuse with a break may work out. It goes three main types of fuse fast blow, standard blow and slow bow.?
You need to know what type fuse the manufacturer is using.?

In electronics they mainly use fast blow.
Motors use slow blow.
Now have mix. Only the manufacturer knows what best?

Dave?

Re: SPEAKIN BOUT FUSES

Just a few issues about that 10 amp breaker video.:

First, I believe ,many mini lathes have 5 amp fuses, not 10 amp.? My pretty old Micro-Mark is 5 amp.

At the Little Machine Shop site they say this:

For the 5 amp fuse:? "5 each, 5 amp, fast-acting fuses. These 5 mm x 20 mm fuses are used in both the mini lathe and the mini mill. These fuses fit numerous SIEG C2 & C3 mini lathes as well as SIEG X2 mini mills."? You may have something different than that, but it is important to check.

For the 10 amp fuse:? "5 each, 10 amp, fast-acting fuses. These 5 mm x 20 mm fuses are used on HiTorque mini mills and mini lathes. Also used on SIEG SC2 mini lathes, SX2 mini mills and X2 small mills."

So be sure to check the fuse rating for YOUR specific machine.? But continuing with the 10 amp one...

He discusses a 10 amp breaker and even states 10 amp in the description with the link to Amazon, but at Amazon it is a 30 amp breaker.

I believe the 10 amp breaker is Carling No.?CLB-103-11B3A-B-A.?? Here is a link to it at DigiKey:

This seems to be the same 10 amp breaker at Amazon:

Here is a 5 amp version at Amazon:

The specification states that these breakers are 250 VAC or 32 VDC rated.? What does this voltage mean?? The voltage on a breaker (or a fuse) is the voltage the device is guaranteed to stand off if the breaker trips (or the fuse blows).? In other words, when tripped (or blown) nothing inside will happen to make a connection or an arc over.? It will stay open.? I found 250 VAC and 32 VDC to be strange bedfellows, but that's their specification.? I don't know if this is an AC or DC circuit being protected.? If DC, there is a good chance that the voltage rating on the breaker is too low.? That doesn't mean you won't "get away" with it, but that would not be good practice.

Another issue is that this is a thermal breaker, and the normal fuse is "fast acting" (as opposed to "Slo Blo").? The breaker will react slower than the fuse.? Again, that might not be an issue, but it might.? Hard to know.? The point is, just because a breaker has the same current rating as a fuse does NOT mean it will behave the same and it is not necessarily a functional replacement.? Yes, it worked fine in his video.? But what is not known if this is just luck, or some semiconductor junction(s) get perhaps a little damaged with each event as that can be cumulative.

Finally, I pretty much NEVER use a standard twist drill for plastic, especially a large hole in thin plastic.? I use a dubbed drill (or a lip and spur drill but that is a complex grind).? Dubbing is where you grind or hone the cutting edges, so they have no rake at all.? Like in this photo:? Yes, the cutting edge will scrape more than cut.? But that's actually what you want because it prevents corkscrewing into the plastic.

As he says, this primitive lathe is rather like a watchmaker's turns, the precursor to a watchmaker's lathe and still preferred by some watchmakers today.? The video shows turning between centers, which nowadays is hardly ever used today, even though it's the only way to repeatedly remove and replace the work in a lathe without losing precision alignment.

But I'm wondering, if this is video #11 in a series, where are 1-10?? Not everybody would have the patience to watch them?all, but he should at least tell us how we can.
