The good old days are a distant memory.?

I have had them reject coupons in the store so I don't ask anymore. If your store will let you use it, go for it, but mine won't.

It couldn't hurt to ask, I guess.

Re: LMS Hand Wheel X/Y DROs

Thanks, y¡¯all!

I was calibrating my TouchDRO app using a new Dial Indicator and using the 10yr-old LMS X-axis rotary encoder DRO and wondering which to believe! I think I¡¯m able to trust my newly installed LMS-supplied magnetic scales now. I¡¯m a bit disappointed that the BT adapter they supply with their SIEG scales/readers is not Yuriy¡¯s and will be trying to get the scales/readers to work with Yuriy¡¯s adapter by adding some extra electronic hardware.

Re: LMS Hand Wheel X/Y DROs

Hi, Bret; as Brian noted, you still need to take backlash into account, which is one reason I added the iGaging scaled to my 7x16. They can also slip/skip if you turn the hand wheels too fast (most easily seen when withdrawing the tailstock).

I had some significant issues with the ones I bought 3 years ago, but LMS worked with me getting (slightly) revised heads with better QC out to me. I also made modifications to mine eliminating metal-to-plastic contact between the rotating & stationary internals.

Not like thd goid old days.??

The good news for a purchase a new mini lathe in November for $589.00 . Now I do not feel bad it is still $799.00

thank you

Harbor Freight is just concluding a 4-day sale today , and has a 25% off coupon.? That's how I bought my initial lathe (before modification) and my mini-mill.

When first look at mini lathes about 20 years ago the was about $250 to $500
They look good for little projects.??
I switch to mini lathe for size and weight.?
I did find the lathe was? good with few miner fixes. The biggest wast a good tool post.?

As far as Grizzly does they make a nice lathe with price to match. I typically can find a better price from Amazon,? Harbor Freight,? Walmart and Ebay. But know looking what for Grizzly take gust work out .

They sense the rotation of the screw, not taking backlash between the screw and nut into account. No better than the markings on the dials.

Re: DC power supply grounding

Appreciate everyone's thoughts.

On the diagram I posted, that emergency switch has traditional spade connectors. So one easy fix is to just swap the white and black connectors, putting the fuse on the hot leg. That puts the potentiometer switch on the neutral, which I guess isn't all that big a deal.

However, I plan on keeping the orientation of the two wires to the emergency switch and moving the fuse (breaker) to the hot side anyhow as it just makes more sense to me. Will revise the diagram for my needs going forward and stick a copy in the control box so I can't loose it.

On Monday, January 1st, 2024 at 8:53 AM, Don Burns <donaldgburns@...> wrote:

Breaking the high side line and not the neutral was painfully demonstrated to me years ago. My M-in-L needed me to drill a hole and handed me her ancient Sears 1/4" all metal drill. When I let go of the power switch I got 115 VAC to the hand. She that happened often. It had the old two wire cord without a polarity plug. 50-50 chance the neutral was being switched and a huge buildup of copper/grease inside the case caused a low resistance to the case. When plugged in and used it was possible to energize the case. Didn't take me long to put a new three wire card on that beast. I would have tossed it but she was frugal to a fault.

Re: Grizzly is doing better - I hope!!!

OK, let's be clear.? ?These 7x lathes have a very wide price spread, with no discernible difference in quality except to a lucky few that received a really good one, or alternatively meets their particular accuracy requirements.? ? Even the brushless motor, initially only seen on LMS and MM lathes, is available from lower priced vendors on amazon and ebay.? ?Any price variation is only at the discretion and desired profit of vendors.

And what is the point of the paragraph above?? ? That there is substantial room in the prices of the "premium" vendors to require better factory setup, not just luck of the draw like every lower price vendor's machines.

And even for all vendors, the factory could do better.

There is one specific improvement that would not make for a large price increase and would be easily accomplished at the factory level.? ?And that is headstock alignment which is the most critical parameter for accuracy of many operations.? ?Extra time at this point when the lathe bed and headstock (with spindle installed) are mated would made a big difference in the performance and accuracy of the machine.? ? This is the single point that requires more QC, notwithstanding my experiences with mechanically seizures on run-in or DOA electronics.

All other deficiencies are secondary and much easier to correct or live with.
