Ultimate Vice?
Once I replace the gears on my Buffalo 4x6 bandsaw I need to build a Vice. For Horizontal cutting. I have a Clausing 8520 vertical mill, Craftsman 12x36 Lathe and a 7x12 mini Lathe so I "should" be able to make up any part needed. So what will it look like? I would love to see pictures of your vice, especially if you really like it. What do I need to avoid? Ralph |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIce cream and Coke Zero. ? ?I need to get those under control.? Oh if you mean the 4X6 vise well that is a different story. ?So far? ive used only the supplied vise. ?However ive had plenty of occasion where a vise insert would have been ideal.? By vise insert i mean a block of steel with plenty of tapped holes for holding stock via toe clamps. ?The reality is few vise options solve the basic problem of thin stock and odd angles. ?You really want your clamping just millimeters from the blade. ? A vice can be made from 4x4 1/4" angle iron will do for the vice parts.? If you go to youtube under 4x6 bandsaw modifications you find ideas for the bandsaw.? I did the one where you add a threaded rod on the left side of the jaws so that you could put stress on small parts.? Easy to do and adds great versatility to the saw's vice.? Here are links to three work-holding and position modifications related to the vise.? The vise itself has not modified because it has never presented a problem to me.? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSmall parts, I just clamp a small drill press vise in the saw vise. Not elegant, but quite functional. ? Just a few ideas¡¡ ?

Bill?sent me his photos as I couldn't see them either. His ingenious jigs just reinforces the fact that if you can hold it - you can cut it! I don't believe there is an 'ultimate vice', just a vice set up well for the cut you want to make. Sure every vice needs some extender jaws, and a fixed jaw on the out-feed table helps,?but they don't need to be fancy to work. Here's a pic of a standard vice cutting an 1/8" (3mm) slit to make a slotted clamp, something most people use a milling machine with a slitting saw to do - there are?2 cuts less than?0.040" (1mm) apart. The extender jaws?are just 2"x3/8" black MS bar and extend right across the gap, something that Mike Cox's?beautifully designed and made ones can't do. Horses for courses.? - jv? |
