Bandsaw blade welding

Hello,

I have Homier 4x6 bandsaw and thoght it would be a good idea to have
a way of welding the blade together when it breaks.

Here is a website with the method I am copying.

I made a fixture like the one shown. My 4x6 is about 8 months old.
So far the the blades seem to hold up very good and none have broken
et. I have a small wood bandsaw too. The wood bandsaw has smaller
blades of about 3/16" to 1/4" wide. I broke a blade on it yesterday
and tried the rewelding. After my second try it is holding and I am
cutting wood with it. The 4x6 blade being 1/2" should be even easier
to weld/braze.

Anyone else trying this? Any successes?

Bob

You are the first one I've seen whose bought the Homier bandsaw. How
did you come by that choice and how did it compare to the other
imported brands (assuming you compared the quality of the others)?

For $99 the last time I looked, it seemed like a good deal, however,
I could not get a good look at one to see how it compared to others
I've used/seen.

BTW, technically, that is brazing the bandsaw blade together. The
important thing, though, is that when it is done properly it works
pretty good. That is how my dad always made his blades and, for the
most part, they wore out long before the brazing broke and those that
broke the brazed joint were repaired and eventually wore out on the
second try. :)

My wood bandsaw blade broke again. The factory weld broke but my
weld is still holding. I rewelding the blade and am back in
service. I applied an even smaller piece of flux and brazing rod and
it seemed to work better.

My 4x6 saw has never had a broken blade. The teeth wear out first.

My metal bandsaw is too new to need to fix a blade, but have brazed quite a few for my wood bandsaw. I have a block of 1 inch wood with a notch cut in the top about two inches long and an inch deep. Across the top I have two steel clamps that hold the blade in place with the ends ground taper and lined up. Put a short piece (about an 16th inch long) piece of silver solder on the joint, flux and heat with a propane torch. When the solder melts it is pulled into the joint and the blade (with a touch of a Dremel grinder is ready to use)
Someday I must build a metal version, and a jig to taper grind the ends of the broken blade.
