Thanks for the idea, at his time I don't have air due to my housing situation but next year might look better since I am moving. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Rod,

Maybe a pneumatic cylinder may be easier to find and adapt to hydraulic given the low pressures that will be used in this application. If you have shop-air from a compressor adding a two-way valve would give push-button raising and lowering if a pneumatic system was used.

Would be interesting to know how it works out!

Cheers, Cletus

I know you get what you pay for but the gravity "spring" feed is just horrendous but it?can still be simple & inexpensive that's why I asked for a "cheap" alternative to add the hydraulic control. If I can find a hydraulic unit on the inexpensive side then it would take nothing more than a couple of "simple" brackets to adapt it to the saw. I found a web site where a guy adapted a hydraulic unit to his saw & the unit only cost him $6.99 but I can't find the hydraulic unit any where, maybe I'm not looking right. That's why I was asking on this forum, just thought someone had already done & had a good part number. The coolant system is a given, that's on the list to be added & of course the infamous bi-metal blade change over : ) I will also be looking to improve the vise this thing came with, I'll work something out which will be simple & inexpensive & post if I am successful.

Thank you for providing this info to me. Are you going to use both units on the saw? The price is right if it is strong enough but I don't know if I want to mess with adding two of them but with that said if that's the only alternative I guess that will be that answer. Like I said earlier there is a guy who used an Atlas brand hydraulic control unit on his but I just can't seem to track one down I'll post the site when I can find it. If anyone knows where I can get one please advise.

IMO?the 4x6?is just what it is and it is good at it too ...a simple inexpensive metal cutting bandsaw. Keep it simple! IMO More useful and less expensive mods would be a Lenox Bi-metal?10-14 Blade and Recirculating Coolant system. But if you're bent on spending the bucks?on hydraulics, I'm sure it could be done with a little bit of engineering.

You can silver braze using the ordinary hardware store butane torch. I have a MAPP torch also but reserve that for larger jobs like copper boilers where the work conducts a lot of the heat away from the job.

Almost any shop with a larger bandsaw can do that for you. Better quality bandsaws usually come with a built in blade welder. Also, I have not tried it yet, but for my wood bandsaw I silver solder or braze my blades. There are kits available for doing this job with guides for scarfing the ends, clamps to hold the blade ends together and in alignment and even include the silver brazing material. Larry, thanks. My Jet is about the same age & it does the same thing.
I figured I had the guides set to one side or the set in the blades
was wearing causing it to lead. That's one of the reasons I joined
the group, thought someone might have a can of cut straightener :).
We wsed to have a Wilton foundry about 12 miles from here, but they
only made vises & Hunter fan housings. (good vises back then). I
don't worry to much about the cuts because I can clean them up on the
lathe or mill, but sometimes you just hate to loose the stock. BTW
glade it's you getting the snow instead of me. I'm in MS, & it was up
in the 60's today. Another 20 deg. or so & I'll start to thaw out. Do
appreciate the help. britt

I will try to go out tomorrow and check it. I bought the saw
thinking I was getting a american made saw that was better than the
imports. I gave $400 for it back in 1988. Factory men worked on it
several times and it would cut straight for a day or so and then
start getting all cock eyed again. Never used it much after that.
Have been reading alot of ideas on making 4X6's cut better and am
going to try some of them in the futher.

Larry, Can you tell me if the gearbox parts & blade drive wheel
are
the same as the HF, Jet... knock-offs? I have an old Jet & found
this
saw & would like to get it running for my father. My Jet looks
like
the drive gear & shaft are 2 pieces. If thats the same on this
saw,
I'll turn the shaft & buy the gear, bearings, & wheel. Wiltin
lists a
5x8" & I think that is what this is. Can you tell me where the
mod#
is located on your's? Just starting to clean this one up & havent
found it yet. If your's is the same, could you send a parts
breakdown
or #s? Haven't been able to contact Wilton yet. Thanks in
advance.
