Re: Ultimate Vice?
Here are links to three work-holding and position modifications related to the vise.? The vise itself has not modified because it has never presented a problem to me.? I also have a bolt shortening jig made from a piece of thick angle with various sized threaded holes that can be clamped between the vise jaws (sorry, no picture right now).? ? 1.????? Fixture plate with threaded holes for parts that won¡¯t fit well between the vise jaws.??????????? ? 2.????? 90 Degree stop for quick repeatable resets after angle cuts: ? 3.????? Parallels with a jack screw: |
Re: Ultimate Vice?
A vice can be made from 4x4 1/4" angle iron will do for the vice parts.? If you go to youtube under 4x6 bandsaw modifications you find ideas for the bandsaw.? I did the one where you add a threaded rod on the left side of the jaws so that you could put stress on small parts.? Easy to do and adds great versatility to the saw's vice.? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIce cream and Coke Zero. ? ?I need to get those under control.? Oh if you mean the 4X6 vise well that is a different story. ?So far? ive used only the supplied vise. ?However ive had plenty of occasion where a vise insert would have been ideal.? By vise insert i mean a block of steel with plenty of tapped holes for holding stock via toe clamps. ?The reality is few vise options solve the basic problem of thin stock and odd angles. ?You really want your clamping just millimeters from the blade. ? Searching the 4x6 Bandsaw yahoo group files
Hi All Ralph wrote he couldn't find photos and was having trouble locating messages.?I find Yahoo groups a real pig to navigate but this is what works for me, hopefully other people?will add?other ways than I've found: 1. Its easiest if you know a specific message number since you can put that in the box that appears top right in the conversations tab and it takes you to that post immediately. 2. Then?(I just found now!) there is an 'Advanced Search' function which lets you enter the usual author, topic, date range etc.?However this only shows?up after you've entered a topic into 'Search Conversations' and hit 'Search Groups' and scroll down past all the crap (Search Groups?never gave me what I wanted in the past so never used it) 3.The?date a photo was posted appears if you hover over it in the 'photostream'?and with that you can use the advanced search to locate the message to get the background behind the photo. 4. Same with the Files section, there is a date posted for each file that you can use to search on. 5. In the 'About' tab, the array of # posts by?Month and Year allows?you to go back to that year/month of the list if you double click on the number.? Pls add more or different ways - jv |
Re: How to change the drive Gears on 4x6
Hi Ralph, I just found your and JZ's photos by accident because the photo list was ordered by date and they were in the last few photos posted In the 'Conversations' list there is a 'Message #' search box at top right.? John Pitkins post on the puller?is #?5289. - jv |
Ultimate Vice?
Once I replace the gears on my Buffalo 4x6 bandsaw I need to build a Vice. For Horizontal cutting. I have a Clausing 8520 vertical mill, Craftsman 12x36 Lathe and a 7x12 mini Lathe so I "should" be able to make up any part needed. So what will it look like? I would love to see pictures of your vice, especially if you really like it. What do I need to avoid? Ralph |
Re: How to change the drive Gears on 4x6
Thanks everyone for the replies.
John how did you ever find my pictures? I cannot even find them. Also I seached the files for John Pitkins? That comes up empty. My gears are brass and steel, I think, I have not thought of doing this since I posted the pictures. Ralph ? |

To add to John's post, Grizzly also supplies parts for their 4X6 saw.? I own the Harbor Freight 4X6 saw and have bought parts for it from Grizzly. Grizzly has the worm and gear in stock.? Don't know if they are a fit for your saw.? Grizzly's parts team is quite helpful - might be worth a call. Worm, part no. P0622194 - $20.00 Gear, part no. How to change the drive Gears on 4x6
I have a old Buffalo 4x6 that needs it's gears replaced. HELP!! Where do I start how do I remove the gears? Where do I get replacement gears from? I have seen replacement gears on Amazon that some have reported using. Pictures would be greatly appreciated but any help would would be appreciated!! Ralph |
Re: Used the info
Yes, it was giving me fits. It had worked fine for a number of years and many blade changes, then it got to where every time I tried to cut anything with it, the blade would immediately jump off! I tried new blades and did what the info that came with the saw said to do---but no luck. I put it to the side for over a year until I stumbled upon this site. I then jumped back on it with the ideas and instructions found here, and now it is working great again! It sure beats the heck out of a hacksaw! My handheld portaband cuts good, but can't keep a straight cut.

Re: Used the info
My Bandsaw is a Buffalo, possible 50 years old. But looks exactly like any 4x6 bandsaw.
I? bought it at a yard sale and used it occasionally for 5 years. I do not have room to store for parts. I have a Delta 14" bandsaw that I put a Consew variable speed DC brushless motor on. I can slow it down to metal cutting range but it just doesn't do as good of job as my Buffalo did. I used the Buffalo with a vertical table I don't even have a vice for horizontal use. The vice is on my list of things to make. All of the 4x6 bandsaws I have seen pretty much have the same gear configuration. Ralph |

First question. My be what type or brand saw are you working on ?? If it's a harbor freight.? " I " would think? about another saw. And keep old one for spare parts .? Then you can tear into the old one as much as you like. Gears maybe an adventure finding
and replacing .? But I am an excellent tearer downer, just lack the super powers sometimes to get all the parts back in the box. From: 4x6bandsaw@... <4x6bandsaw@...> on behalf of rhulslander@... [4x6bandsaw] <4x6bandsaw@...>

I need to replace the gears, who knew you were supposed to check the oil level? Where do I start Amazon has gears but they do not appear to be the exact same size.
But the shaft appears to be the same size.
How do I remove the gears? Do I drive the shaft out? Which way?
Needing lots of help.
