Hello. I have just found the ZICG group again on groups.io

And I'm very happy to see thath it's still existing, including the photos and databases.
Thanks very much to Mr. Moffatt for taking such a lot of work.
In the mean time my works can be seen on
Good Light !

Re: File - zicg-info.txt

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all staying well, despite the huge challenge we all face right now. I think it's too much to hope that nobody here will be affected by COVID-19, so all I can say is take care of yourself and look out for others. If in doubt, defer to the WHO guidelines.

I have deleted the Yahoo ZICG group because I cannot stop the email below from being sent. Yahoo "deleted" the files a long time ago including what should be the source for that email. There is no way for me in the Yahoo settings to turn off automatic emails, so I have deleted the group.

Regards,
Michael Moffatt.

ABOUT Yahoogroups
Yahoogroups is a free mailing list service. You can set your own email distribution list by going to or see information about the ZICG mailing list at
If you are a member of Yahoo AND you are a member of ZICG, you can view the archive of emails online as well as change your personal settings (such as digest mode etc). You may also view the subscription list.
ZICG used to be listed with Coollist. Poor reliability and even poorer customer service saw ZICG move in May 2000 to eGroups. William Lurie organised with nine other members to keep ZICG ad-free and paid eGroups a fee to drop all advertisements from emails. ZICG became ad-free from November 5, 2000. EGroups became a possession of Yahoo in December, 2000. Hence ZICG became a Yahoo group.
---
POSTING TO ZICG
The ZICG list was set up for people who want to discuss anything Zeiss. ZICG is a collection of Zeiss authorities and enthusiasts brought together through the medium of email to share knowledge as friends. Anybody can be a member and nobody has ever been banned.
You cannot send attachments. If you want to share a file, put it on a website and post the URL to the list. Remember that .vcf files (vcards) are classified as attachments. As a member, you can upload photos and files to the ZICG archives with Yahoo and then send notification to the list.
Please do not post HTML or specially formatted messages to the list. If you can, turn off these options on your email program. Some ZICG members cannot read your message if you send it in those formats.
Sale or Wanted adverts are acceptable on ZICG. All adverts must be about Zeiss equipment. You can post them at any time as a dealer or collector. Please do not abuse this policy, regulations will be set if members become dissatisfied with excessive sale/wanted adverts from the same individuals. It is acceptable to send an auction URL as long as it maintains a relevance to discussion on ZICG.

(UN)SUBSCRIBING

Re: I don't understand some people!

I don't think such exaggerations are helpful. It's not true that "honest people are few and far between". That is not my experience at all, not even on ebay.?

That said, the motto is "caveat emptor", as always. The PC sync terminal on a pre-war camera design such as that offered "Contax II from Jena" should be a dead giveaway to anyone who knows even a bit about vintage cameras. If any collector of vintage cameras doesn't even know that much he deserves to be duped.?

But I'd be surprised if there were any takers for that camera. So in the end no real harm is done. I find that clumsy forgery rather amusing.?

Re: I don't understand some people!

To all decent and honest people out there.?

It is no use making our selfs mad. even if you get the seller off ?the Internet within 10 seconds it will be advertised on 200 different accounts .?

And for all the people who get? scammed , sorry but ignorance in not an excuse, consider it a lesson learned, and move on.

We just have to except that honest people? are getting very few and are far in between. The only weapon we have is knowledge and instead of putting energy in complaining, lets start educating our selfs and make sure others get educated. In that way these vultures whom pray on the ignorant? ? will no longer have a chance.? ?

I know harsh words? but that is how the world is these days.? Been there done that.

Vriendelijke Groet?

Hi
I'm betting this guy is aware of what he's doing.
I sent him a message indicating it wasn't a Contax but he didn't reply.

Re: I don't understand some people!

To judge by some of the other items that seller has on offer which are marked "Cambridgeworld", he is either 1) linked to [the former] Cambridge Camera in New York; or 2) is stealing images from them. In either case, he is unaware that Cambridge Camera has a stellar reputation for underhand sales tactics, of which switch and bait is probably the least unsavoury. Oh and by the way, that user name "Blatworld"? - "blat" is Russian criminal slang for "connections" of the type which get you undeserved advantage.

Stay well away - I would be surprised if any buyer received so much as a Kiev camera from this listing!

Re: I don't understand some people!

This article by Henry Scherer is of relevance in the context of this discussion:

Someone should fix a "nice try" comment to the ebay ad. Perhaps the seller is genuinely unaware of the true pedigree of the camera he is trying to sell.? If he insists, then he should be reported to ebay.

Re: I don't understand some people!

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Looking in my 1939 copy of 'Contax Photography', some early Contaxes had the 'ZEISS IKON' logo to the right of the RF window.? I can only assume this person is trying to fake a Jena Contax (in which case the Carl Zeiss Jena logo should be in the accessory shoe.)? But the 'donor' camera is a Kiev 4a from what I can see with the revised back locks etc.? Unfortunately someone may be taken in by it....

Cheers,

Steve

Re: I don't understand some people!

I suppose it is an almost genuine Contax. :-) Just that it's made in Kiev after the war.?

I am not aware that bona fide Contax IIs had the Zeiss Logo engraved below the focusing wheel.. And anyway, why would the engraving be "Carl Zeiss Jena"? The Contax II came from Dresden.?

Then the logo engraved on the lens cap differs from that on the camera body.

And what's with the focal length of that "Sonnar"? "f=5sm"? sentimeters?

Ikonta 520/2 production year

Hello all!
I'm a classic camera collector focusing mainly on made-in-italy cameras.
An elderly friend of our family recently left me a Ikonta 520/2, telling me it was bought by her uncle who dramatically fell prisoner by germans in 1944 as a civilian and died in Dachau 1945. The camera is fitted with a Novar 1:6,3 numbered 1020638 and the serial number on the body is Q 84408. I wondered if I can date the camera by those serial numbers. I noticed you have a file with serial numbers datings so I checked it was probably produced in 1929 (first year of 520/2 production).
I'm proceeding to compile a new row in the Zeiss Ikon Camera Number Registry. I'd also like to send images of the camera but I have to check how to download them the "photos" folder of the group.
Thank you for managing this great group, with so many infos and files added.

Re: Year of manufacture by serial number prefix?

Hi Ron,

Do you happen to know the exact filename?

The files are located in /g/zicg/files and I think they were all successfully migrated from .

I don't think any got lost, but if you can tell me the filename that might help. Also check the "holoceen" directory in the files section of groups.io.

Michael.
