Re: Serial number inconsistent with look and technical details of Contax IIa

Thanks for the suggestion.?

I the discussion under the picture I had posted on Flickr:

... someone had suggested the possibility of a retrofit. A late retrofit appears unlikely, viz. Henry Scherer's statements on his web site. According to the historian Hans-J¨¹rgen Kuc, author of several books on the Zeiss Ikon product line, retrofits were offered by Zeiss Ikon early on, but it was not usual to change the black dial for a color dial. Then there is the rangefinder window and the screws on the front plate. It doesn't seem very likely that anyone would go to all that trouble.?

My Contax IIa looks like a bona fide late version in all aspects except the serial number.?

Re: Serial number inconsistent with look and technical details of Contax IIa

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

When I was deciding on whether or not to purchase the camera in the photo (which came with a 1930s Zeiss lens and not the Jupiter), I wrote to rangefinderforum.com for advice. A user there called Highway 61 said the following:

"Looks like this is an early production Contax IIa from 1950-1951. Later models had an additional glass unit hold in place with two tiny screws in front of the rangefinder window. This one doesn't have it."

So according to this, 1951 was the year it changed to the two-screw window type. Perhaps the colour dial and the electronic sync are a retro-fit?

Maybe some someone on rangefinderforum can shed some light on the subject

All the best,

As I wrote in my posting, on mine, the S/N is also engraved inside the body. I can see that when I take off the back. The S/N engraved inside is the same as the one on the accessories shoe. It starts with a T, which is inconsistent with the technical layout and looks of my IIa.

Re: Serial number inconsistent with look and technical details of Contax IIa

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hello,

I have two IIa bodies which are both very early ones, with the "P" serial numbers i believe (unfortunately they are not with me so I can't give you the exact codes). They definitely have a different, slightly simpler rangefinder window. I have a photo of the older of the two (with Jupiter 8 lens), here:

Perhaps they changed to the "screw rangefinder window" version before 1951?

I may be confusing the Contax with the Kiev, but is the serial also embossed in the camera interior? I have a vague recollection that it is, but i may be mistaken.

All the best!

Em 28/03/2019 17:55, mkk707@... [ZICG] escreveu:

Apparently, this is a late Contax IIa, identifiable by its colour dial. It has a colour dial with a yellow 50 and red numbers for the faster speeds on the exposure speed dial.

It also has an electronic sync (i.e., PC sync terminal) rather than the mechanical plunger sync of the early, black dial bodies.

It has the two small screws to the left and right of the rangefinder lookout window that are indicative of late versions of the Contax IIa.

The screws that hold the front plate to the body are rounded and not countersunk, unlike those of the black dials that are smaller, flat and countersunk.

However, the serial number that is engraved into the accessory shoe and also the camera body, when I take off the back, is T28612. According to Hans-J¨¹rgen Kuc's authoritative work "Auf den Spuren der Contax, Band II" and numerous other sources (which in fact might all be traced back to Kuc's book and then would then not be independent sources), such as "http://forum.mflenses.com/contax-iia-iiia-serial-numbers-t16023.html" rel="noreferrer nofollow">here state that T28001 through T35000 were manufactured from August 1951 through December 1951 and are definitely early, mechanical sync black dial versions.

So in short, the serial number indicates an early model Contax IIa, while the camera clearly is a late model. Can anyone help me out on this?

Contarex film change back

Not sure that postings with offers of hardware for sale are accepted in this group. If not, please let me know and I will remove it.?

Otherwise ... Contarex owners please take note: I have this film change back for a Contarex for sale:

I tested it with film on a Contarex Special body. ?

Zeiss Bayonet Mount (additional information)

As I stated in my prior message, I need a Zeiss vintage bayonet mount. However, my ideal would be a 15cm Tessar in Compur shutter with the mount in place.

Zeiss vintage bayonet mount

I need a bayonet mount for an early large format Zeiss camera. The lens/shutter is fastened to this, which then mounts/dismounts quickly on the lens board. The lens board hardware is in place. The lens is a 15cm Tessar in Compur shutter. The camera is a 4X5 Tropica.

This film splicer (catalogue Nr. 36.5600) is still available; the Finnish member who expressed interest seems to? have gone cold on the idea.

As I said before, it's free, but I would like a refund at cost of the postage involved.

ABOUT Yahoogroups

Yahoogroups is a free mailing list service. You can set your own email distribution list by going to or see information about the ZICG mailing list at

If you are a member of Yahoo AND you are a member of ZICG, you can view the archive of emails online as well as change your personal settings (such as digest mode etc). You may also view the subscription list.

ZICG used to be listed with Coollist. Poor reliability and even poorer customer service saw ZICG move in May 2000 to eGroups. William Lurie organised with nine other members to keep ZICG ad-free and paid eGroups a fee to drop all advertisements from emails. ZICG became ad-free from November 5, 2000. EGroups became a possession of Yahoo in December, 2000. Hence ZICG became a Yahoo group.

---
POSTING TO ZICG

The ZICG list was set up for people who want to discuss anything Zeiss. ZICG is a collection of Zeiss authorities and enthusiasts brought together through the medium of email to share knowledge as friends. Anybody can be a member and nobody has ever been banned.

You cannot send attachments. If you want to share a file, put it on a website and post the URL to the list. Remember that .vcf files (vcards) are classified as attachments. As a member, you can upload photos and files to the ZICG archives with Yahoo and then send notification to the list.

Please do not post HTML or specially formatted messages to the list. If you can, turn off these options on your email program. Some ZICG members cannot read your message if you send it in those formats.

Sale or Wanted adverts are acceptable on ZICG. All adverts must be about Zeiss equipment. You can post them at any time as a dealer or collector. Please do not abuse this policy, regulations will be set if members become dissatisfied with excessive sale/wanted adverts from the same individuals. It is acceptable to send an auction URL as long as it maintains a relevance to discussion on ZICG.

OFFICIAL ZICG WEB PAGE

There is no external website for ZICG. Everything is contained within the Yahoo group page (). Many files have been shared (see the "Files" section) and the email archive is fully searchable.

An official ZICG web site used to exist at . It was created by Thomas Myro. It is well out of date but has some archives from 1997 on it. Nobody has used the classified section for some time now. It was a private web page, not a collectively produced one, which disappeared with the end of Geocities.

Re: Year of production of my Zeiss cameras

Thanks for the links. According to those serial numbers, my Contessa 35 is from 1953 (is one of the first Contessa 35 2nd series with Synchro Compur shutter producted from 1953), but I could not find the exact year of my Super Ikonta IV and Rolleiflex 3.5, some more help?
