ABOUT Yahoogroups

Yahoogroups is a free mailing list service. You can set your own email distribution list by going to or see information about the ZICG mailing list at

If you are a member of Yahoo AND you are a member of ZICG, you can view the archive of emails online as well as change your personal settings (such as digest mode etc). You may also view the subscription list.

ZICG used to be listed with Coollist. Poor reliability and even poorer customer service saw ZICG move in May 2000 to eGroups. William Lurie organised with nine other members to keep ZICG ad-free and paid eGroups a fee to drop all advertisements from emails. ZICG became ad-free from November 5, 2000. EGroups became a possession of Yahoo in December, 2000. Hence ZICG became a Yahoo group.

---
POSTING TO ZICG

The ZICG list was set up for people who want to discuss anything Zeiss. ZICG is a collection of Zeiss authorities and enthusiasts brought together through the medium of email to share knowledge as friends. Anybody can be a member and nobody has ever been banned.

You cannot send attachments. If you want to share a file, put it on a website and post the URL to the list. Remember that .vcf files (vcards) are classified as attachments. As a member, you can upload photos and files to the ZICG archives with Yahoo and then send notification to the list.

Please do not post HTML or specially formatted messages to the list. If you can, turn off these options on your email program. Some ZICG members cannot read your message if you send it in those formats.

Sale or Wanted adverts are acceptable on ZICG. All adverts must be about Zeiss equipment. You can post them at any time as a dealer or collector. Please do not abuse this policy, regulations will be set if members become dissatisfied with excessive sale/wanted adverts from the same individuals. It is acceptable to send an auction URL as long as it maintains a relevance to discussion on ZICG.

Re: ZEISS IKON Ideal 111: Help

Matt, I was wrong about the Zeiss Ideal holders I saw yesterday on eBay:
they are actually 9x12cm.

Pacific Rim Camera has a lot of German plate camera gear, but the only
Ideal 6.5x9cm holder listed is for a film pack adapter missing a dark
slide. (But cheap at $15.)

I've read of others improvising film sheaths, but never have tried myself.
My 9x12cm film sheaths are made of light gauge sheet metal and have bent
edges that hold the film in place.

You might ask on the APUG plate camera forum--there are several people
there more knowledgeable than myself.

Compur shutters are great, and are often found in usable condition many
decades after their manufacture. In my experience, if the slow speeds
don't stick open, USUALLY the marked mid-range speeds are accurate enough
for B&W film. The B and T settings do not require you to cock the
shutter.

--Leigh.

Leigh, thank you for taking the time to educate me. You are correct about
the film size (it is 6.5x9) and the "pop off" mechanism.

I found 6.5x9cm sheet film online (in Germany). Still have to find the
glass plate holders you mentioned on Ebay, can't hurt to get some. Am I
correct that the purpose of film sheaths is to 'replace' the glass plate?
Filling the space between the film and the back of the holder to support
the sheet film? That could be easily manufactured with some sort of
plastic sheet?

I also have to figure out how accurate the Compur shutter mechanism still
is to see whether the camera can still be used.

Regarding the glass... yesterday I took the camera outside (bright day)
and it was not so bad after all. If I can't figure out how to remove the
glass it would not be a show stopper.

Thanks again for your insights.

Matt

Re: ZEISS IKON Ideal 111: Help

Hi, your Zeiss Ideal 111 is actually a 6.5x9cm film size. It uses a
somewhat uncommon series of holders also used on the Zeiss Juwel--they
"pop off" rather than slide off, unlike most other German plate cameras.

I do not know if a 120 rollfilm holder was ever made for this camera.
eBay currently shows a listing for several glass plate holders for the
Ideal 111, but 6.5x9cm sheet film is quite limited, and you will also need
film sheaths to hold it in the glass plate holders. I think 6.5x9cm sheet
film is still available in Germany, but not the US, as far as I know.
(Freestyle used to carry it.)

You may also find 6.5x9cm film pack holders on the used market. Film
packs are no longer available, but others have repurposed the film pack
holders as ground glass holders. (It MIGHT be possible to adapt one of
the more common 120 rollfilm holders to a film pack holder; I don't know
for sure if this is practical.)

Sorry I can't help with the ground glass problem. --Leigh.

PS: I like using these old cameras, and most are still fairly inexpensive.
I'd suggest instead looking for a 6.5x9cm Kodak/Nagel Recomar,
Voigtlander Avus or Ica/Zeiss Maximar they , as all use the same fairly
common holders, including for 120 rollfilm. All three were also available
in 9x12cm size, and 120 rollfilm holders are also fairly common for the
larger size.

These older 120 rollfilm holders don't have the best film support, so
results may not be quite as good as a more modern rollfilm camera

I just got two older cameras from my father in law. One is a ZEISS IKON
Ideal 111 (6x9) and the other one I still have to figure out. The Zeiss is
in pretty good shape and looks like it was hardly used... the other one
not so much :(

I would like to get the Zeiss into a state where I can go out and take
some pictures.

Looking at the ground-glass it has some residue and/or artifacts (see
link with picture below). I am considering cleaning or replacing it. It
seems that by taking off the little screws (on the right side of the
picture) the glass should slide out... but it doesn't. I am looking for
any help/advice on how to proceed.

Also looking for advice on obtaining a 120 Roll Film Back for this camera
(what make/model will fit, good sources (except EBay etc.)

Thanks in advance

Contax I outfit

I recently joined this group hoping to get some feedback on the Contax I outfit i just acquired.

It includes a 1934 Contax I body, 28mm Tessar, f1.5 and f2 50mm Sonnar lenses, 85mm Sonnar, 135 Sonnar and 300mm Tele Tessar K, plus all appropriate viewfinders, lens shades, filters, and film cannisters in plastic cases. In addition it includes a ground glass back with numerous plate holders and Contameter close up set. All in a fitted case of the period.

Is this a unique set or are there more known?

I believe the only missing piece is the diopter holder. This fits onto the accessory shoe and holds tiny corrective lenses in front of the viewfinder. Please help me find this!!

Any feedback or comments are welcome.

Lee Laney

Sale or Wanted adverts are acceptable on ZICG. All adverts must be about Zeiss equipment. You can post them at any time as a dealer or collector. Please do not abuse this policy, regulations will be set if members become dissatisfied with excessive sale/wanted adverts from the same individuals. It is acceptable to send an auction URL as long as it maintains a relevance to discussion on ZICG.

OFFICIAL ZICG WEB PAGE
The official ZICG web site is:

It was created by Thomas Myro. It is well out of date but has some archives from 1997 on it. Nobody has used the classified section for some time now. It is a private web page, not a collectively produced one.

Passwords are:
CONTAPROX for the archives.
PROXAR for the classifieds.

Both in uppercase letters.

WARNING: Thomas's web page has out of date subscription details, it still refers to the Coollist mailing list. That mailing list no longer exists. Please only ever refer to the Yahoo! web page for subscription information.

Sometime in the future it would be great to develop a website made up of contributions from all members of ZICG. This may be something that could be developed through Yahoo's service or via a member with web space to donate.

quote sought for book

This message is for Simon Worsley

Dear Simon:
My book on the Tenax is almost ready to go to the printer. Since you have read the manuscript, would it be possible to grant me a one line quote on the book that I might use on the back cover? Anything positive that you might write would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sorry, I lost your personal e-mail address in a computer crash.
Sincerely, WES LODER
