photos from 4.5 x 6 folders

I'm tempted by the portability and cute appearance of the Ikonta A and its relatives, and from what I've seen on the web they're capable of taking excellent photos. But compared with the 6 x 6 format, and given the larger number of photos to a roll, I'm wondering if it would not work out fairly expensive in the long run. I would want to make digital scans of the photos. I have a 3-in-one scanner, but that can't scan negatives larger than 35mm, so I would need to have physical photos to scan. I'm thinking that the photos on the contact sheet would perhaps be too small scanned that way (at 1800 dpi or 3600 interpolated) and I'd need to get enlargements, which would be far more expensive than the contact sheet - whereas 6 x 6 photos might be large enough for decent scan results?. So I'm wondering what folks who shoot 4.5 x 6 photos and digitize them do.

Nettar 515/2

Oops, I see it's actually a Nettar 515/2, this one in fact:

I've given it a quick look over and it seems to be in reasonable working order. Only a couple of issues I can see so far.

The bellows are a bit saggy but I can't find any leaks (in a dark room with a keyfob light). What can I use to restore their stiffness? Is the 'Vintage camera bellows restoring renovating fluid' on ebay any good?

The mechanical link between the shutter button on the body and the release on the lens has disappeared. All that's there is the rod and spring directly connected to the shutter button. Obviously I can just use the lens shutter release, but has anyone found a simple solution to restore the functionality of the shutter button?

Introducing myself and my folder craze

I'm a freelance translator from England living in the Netherlands and have decided to get back into film photography. Sometimes this digital stuff is just too easy! And I remember how much I used to enjoy the brainwork and 'playing with a mechanical toy' aspect of manual photography. I've become fascinated by the old 120 folding cameras, some of them are so cute, and from what I've seen on the web they can shoot fantastic pictures.

In the pre-digital era I used to take slides and got superb results with a series of 35mm cameras including a Rollei 35B/B35, a Zenit and a Praktica SLR. I used to keep part-exchanging cameras for something 'better'.

My new-to-me Ikonta 520/2 has just arrived and I'm looking forward to shooting small numbers of 6x9 photos. I have a couple of questions about it, so will put those in a separate post.

Re: CZJ Serial Numbers

What's that a telescope:)) Really impressive, I would like to see some photos made with that lens.

I only have two Sonnar 1.5 optics. ?The 50mm has such a luminance with contrasty B&W. ?I have not shot the 20cm 1.5 yet. ?It is a 9X12cm.

Timur, nice start to a collection.?? I am of the opinion that the 268 lens is probably post-WW2 production.? I have a lens with a close serial number, and it has a mix of brass and aluminum alloy components.? Also my lens had hand-scratched markings on the internal lens barrel that are not typically seen in earlier CZJ lenses.

ABOUT Yahoogroups

Yahoogroups is a free mailing list service. You can set your own email distribution list by going to or see information about the ZICG mailing list at

If you are a member of Yahoo AND you are a member of ZICG, you can view the archive of emails online as well as change your personal settings (such as digest mode etc). You may also view the subscription list.

ZICG used to be listed with Coollist. Poor reliability and even poorer customer service saw ZICG move in May 2000 to eGroups. William Lurie organised with nine other members to keep ZICG ad-free and paid eGroups a fee to drop all advertisements from emails. ZICG became ad-free from November 5, 2000. EGroups became a possession of Yahoo in December, 2000. Hence ZICG became a Yahoo group.

OFFICIAL ZICG WEB PAGE
The official ZICG web site is:

It was created by Thomas Myro. It is well out of date but has some archives from 1997 on it. Nobody has used the classified section for some time now. It is a private web page, not a collectively produced one.

Passwords are:
CONTAPROX for the archives.
PROXAR for the classifieds.

Both in uppercase letters.

WARNING: Thomas's web page has out of date subscription details, it still refers to the Coollist mailing list. That mailing list no longer exists. Please only ever refer to the Yahoo! web page for subscription information.

Sometime in the future it would be great to develop a website made up of contributions from all members of ZICG. This may be something that could be developed through Yahoo's service or via a member with web space to donate.

X-Ray Tenax - R?ntgen-Tenax 6200/1

I have created a 'fact sheet' on the Zeiss Ikon R?ntgen-Tenax 6200/1, which seems to have been made in the late 1930s/early 1940s to help in the detection of TB. There seems to be four variants of the basic design which all used a Tenax 2 body stripped of the Compur shutter, self-timer, rangefinder coupling and direct vison viewfinder.? I have attached a copy of this 'fact sheet' in the Files directory of ZICG and would welcome comments/amendments ¨C I would particularly like direction to any contemporary sources of information on this camera (medical equipment?) as I have so far failed to find any original material which mentions the R?ntgen-Tenax .

Re: New Zeiss Book

Dear JOhn and Bill,

Thank you for your kind words about the book. I appreciate it.

Re: New Zeiss Book

Larry,

I wish you a speedy and?complete recovery from you chemo etc. ?This is, of course, your most important job now.

I have been reading in your book and I find that I can pick it up and open to any page and start reading and find, whatever the subject, that I am hooked and read longer than I planned.
The Contax IV is a most interesting subject and new to me. ?Your book is giving me a lot of joy and I look forward to reading it for years to come.

Again, speedy recovery,

Bill Jones?

Thank you all for your kind words, the book is obviously something more than could be done in the format of the Zeiss Historica Journal and I will continue to do my best to contribute there as well on subjects and material not covered in the book. As you can tell from the material on the Contax IV, there were more pictures to be seen that confirm the validity of the claim of a prototype.

I am presently undergoing the early stages of chemotherapy and so my contributions will be slowed for a time.
