ABOUT Yahoogroups

Yahoogroups is a free mailing list service. You can set your own email distribution list by going to or see information about the ZICG mailing list at

If you are a member of Yahoo AND you are a member of ZICG, you can view the archive of emails online as well as change your personal settings (such as digest mode etc). You may also view the subscription list.

ZICG used to be listed with Coollist. Poor reliability and even poorer customer service saw ZICG move in May 2000 to eGroups. William Lurie organised with nine other members to keep ZICG ad-free and paid eGroups a fee to drop all advertisements from emails. ZICG became ad-free from November 5, 2000. EGroups became a possession of Yahoo in December, 2000. Hence ZICG became a Yahoo group.

---
POSTING TO ZICG

The ZICG list was set up for people who want to discuss anything Zeiss. ZICG is a collection of Zeiss authorities and enthusiasts brought together through the medium of email to share knowledge as friends. Anybody can be a member and nobody has ever been banned.

You cannot send attachments. If you want to share a file, put it on a website and post the URL to the list. Remember that .vcf files (vcards) are classified as attachments. As a member, you can upload photos and files to the ZICG archives with Yahoo and then send notification to the list.

Please do not post HTML or specially formatted messages to the list. If you can, turn off these options on your email program. Some ZICG members cannot read your message if you send it in those formats.

Sale or Wanted adverts are acceptable on ZICG. All adverts must be about Zeiss equipment. You can post them at any time as a dealer or collector. Please do not abuse this policy, regulations will be set if members become dissatisfied with excessive sale/wanted adverts from the same individuals. It is acceptable to send an auction URL as long as it maintains a relevance to discussion on ZICG.

Dues for members outside North America are $US 50 per year. Credit card payments are welcome. For more information, see the three websites listed under MEMBER WEB PAGES. Either of the above two people can handle enquiries from interested parties.

---
OFFICIAL ZICG WEB PAGE
The official ZICG web site is:

It was created by Thomas Myro. It is well out of date but has some archives from 1997 on it. Nobody has used the classified section for some time now. It is a private web page, not a collectively produced one.

Passwords are:
CONTAPROX for the archives.
PROXAR for the classifieds.

Both in uppercase letters.

WARNING: Thomas's web page has out of date subscription details, it still refers to the Coollist mailing list. That mailing list no longer exists. Please only ever refer to the Yahoo! web page for subscription information.

Sometime in the future it would be great to develop a website made up of contributions from all members of ZICG. This may be something that could be developed through Yahoo's service or via a member with web space to donate.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I need to apologise to ZICG members and particularly to Simon Worsley for a recent posting? from me, in which I suggested that there was something kerfluey about his messages. It turned out that the streams of duplicate messages I was getting, ostensibly from him,? were actually caused by a glitch in my own email program. That's all fixed now, thank goodness (it's amazing how an uninstall followed by a reinstall will cure all ills!) .

Sesaon's Greetings and a Happy New Year to everyone!

John

John,

Hopefully you have resolved your e-mail problem and can re-assure ZICG members that e-mails from me should be 'duplicate free'.

»Ø¸²©U Contarex set up

I owned them before. 500 hundred bucks or pounds sounds a good bargain to me.

If they are all in good condition and functional, that is a very good price (if it is in USD or EUR) or a reasonable one (if it is in GBP).
I bought this set (along with an 85mm f2) but separately - my purchase was not for investment, but for use.? And from that perspective, they were a superb buy.? Outstanding engineering and optics that belie their age.? Some of my favorite gear for film (and for digital - adapting the lenses to digital bodies).

Re: Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5 question

Hello Marc,

Thank you for your note. I was first sold on the qualities of this lens by the impressive performance of a relatively modern (1970s) Jupiter 3 on a Kiev 4A - even the test roll with cheap film yielded great results.

The details about the design are fascinating!

Thanks again,
Raj

This is a wartime lens and might well be coated even if not so marked. And, yes, the use of a hood will go a long way to eliminate poor resolution.

I have a variety of these lenses in CRF and LTM, along with several Jupiter-3's. All are fine lenses but my personal favorite is a very late Jupiter-3, one of the few made in a matte black finish. All do well with both color and black and white emulsions.

Bertele saw this lens as his triumph until he designed the later Biogon. One of the Zeiss Ikon ads for the Contax RF shows a designer seated on a four foot stack of paper representing the work which went into the wider version of the Sonnar.

Re: Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5 question

Hello Dima
Thank you for your detailed impressions of this lens - your opinion is similar to some others I've read, but it's always nice to hear it from a member of this group!
I'm going to take the plunge on this lens (which is at a nice price compared to the many coated versions I've been able to find)!
Many thanks,
Raj

Re: Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5 question

Dear Raj

I consider uncoated pre war Sonnars excellent ?lenses. I shoot in BW so the coating plays no much role if I use the shade or coated modern filter. ?The main problem of such old lenses is that the oil from aperture blades migrates to the glass surface that causes loss in image contrast. At the same time this lens fog is much more easy to remove from the uncoated lenses. ?So if you can overhaul the lens and calibrate it properly you will not be disappointed. ?

By the way the clean uncoated Zeiss lenses should work with color as well, There is nice Zeiss Ikon leaflet on color photography with Contax dated back to 1939 "Contax Schnappsch¨¹sse in Farben" by Christof Croeber with astonishing color photos.

with best regards
Dima

Dear Dima,
Thank you very much. ?Do you think that it would be worth purchasing? ?I have a coated Jupiter 3 (a clone of the Sonnar) that absolutely amazed me with its performance on a Kiev 4. ?So I've been after the real thing for my Contax IIa. ?I realize that this lens is uncoated, but will that be a major problem if I use a hood?
Many thanks for your help!
Raj

Re: New member thoughts

My mistake and you are correct, total estimated production is 8,500 Tenax 2 as you list.

Sorry about that,

Simon Worsley

Re: New member thoughts

Oh, now I see it.

The second batch serial numbers span a range of 3000, so your list should read:

E.3000 to E.5000 - 2,000 cameras

H.74000 to H.77000 ¨C 3,000 cameras

J.88000 to J.91500 ¨C 3,500 cameras

Wes,

From the 550 records on the Tenax 2 in my database I estimate a total production of 8,500 Tenax 2 in three distinct (by serial number) batches:

E.3000 to E.5000 - 2,000 cameras

H.74000 to H.77000 ¨C 2,000 cameras

J.88000 to J.91500 ¨C 3,500 cameras

I have had a look in my library for a lens diagram for the Sonnar 4/7,5cm lens but so far without success but I will keep looking.

Simon Worsley

Re: New member thoughts

Simon,

Was that a typo on your part?? Adding up 2k+2k+3.5k, I arrive at 7500.? Or did you pad the estimate, as it were, too allow a margin of error?

Best regards,

-Chris
