Books.com took me to the Barnes & Noble site. I could not find the book there.

Can you provide a direct link?

Thanks

Re: Zeiss Brilliant finders numbers?

Wes,

I must confess that I do have a small database of Carl Zeiss accessories' serial numbers but not enough to make any estimates on production.? However I have seen no evidence that these Carl Zeiss finders were made for any other cameras other Zeiss Ikon products,

Re: pre-war contameter dates

I have two Contameters I am attaching images and both are 1343 versions

The first is on the left and is three filters situated vertically to the
left of the case in three individual slots no ribbon with the serial number
of W.81458

The second is three filters laid side by side toward the front of the case.

Neither case has a clasp.

Zeiss Brilliant finders numbers?

I have several Zeiss brilliant finders and I wonder if anyone (Simon?) has a figure on production numbers and characteristics.

I have a 436/2 vertical telescopic finder for 5cm lens #399. What I find interesting about this finder is that it was a Carl Zeiss Jena product¡ªnot Zeiss Ikon. It also has a plain split foot. My suspicion is that it was not intended for just the Contax, or Zeiss Ikon, but for any 35mm camera at that time. Would make sense since CZJ certainly produced a variety of lenses for many different 35mm German cameras.

I have a 436/8 with plain black glossy finish and a plain foot for the Super Ikonta B.

I also have a 436/9 in the later crinkle finish and a cst foot for the Tenax II.

Both the 436/8 and the 436/9 are marked "Made in Germany," even though the 436/8 came from Austria.

Any help on dating these, or production figures? I am sure the 436/9 would probably date to 1938, but have no idea as to how many were made.

Thanks, WES LODER

Simon,

Thank you for the breakdown. ?It will be very helpful to myself or anyone else
interested in the Contax I.

Re: pre-war contameter dates

I have two contameters: 1339 type for Tenax II # W. 99052 and 1341 for the Supper Ikonta B # W. 71576. Both can be seen on my blog, <http://wesloderandnikon.blogspot.com/>, including pictures taken with them. I used the 1341 on Tenax with the 7.5cm Sonnar. Does work.

Cheers, WES

Re: pre-war contameter dates

The few records I have suggest one production run of appropriately 300 Contameter 1339s, with serial numbers between W.99050 to W.99350 - however more Contameter serial numbers gratefully received!

Re: Zeiss accessory shoes.

Simon,

I appologize for not quoting my source. ?The number is from page 78 of Hans-Jurgen Kuc's
"Auf den Spurren der Contax Band I",?2002 printing. ?It, like any other conclusions we make.
is subject to challenge and correction when more data is available.

Kuc lists serial number blocks and I would be very interested in knowing how they compare to
your database.?As a Contax user, I, Of course, would favor any higher number.

I'm very curious about how late?(by serial number)?in the production run?the cameras with
no slow?speeds were made. ?Is it possible to make an estimate from your database?

?Do you have lower hits in the X. series than X.28000? ?Do you have more than 6500 U (AU)
hits? ?Do you have more than 8500 V (AV) hits? ?These are locations where I feel Kuc"s
numbers may be soft.

Re: Zeiss accessory shoes.

I am intrigued by your estimate of a total production run of 36,700 Contax 1, my estimate is much higher at 45,300 - however my estimate is not based on any formal Zeiss Ikon records but on the collation of camera serial numbers (just over 2,100 Contax 1 serial numbers in a total database recording nearly 19,500 pre-War Zeiss Ikon camera serial numbers) and there is an estimate.? Where did the 36,700 number come from?

Simon Worsley

Re: pre-war contameter dates

I have had a look at various Zeiss Ikon publication from the period and the earliest dates I have seen listing for the various pre-War Contameter models are:

Contameter 1343 (Contax 1 & 2) - February 1934 (12,000)

Contameter 1342 (Super Nettel) - March 1935 (500)

Contameter 1341 (Super Ikonta 6x6) - September 1935 (2,750)

Contameter 1340 (Contax 3) - September 1936 (2,500)

Contameter 1339 (Tenax 2) - June 1938 (300)

Contameter 1338 (Super Ikonta 533/16) - July 1939 (150)

I have a nearly 400 records of individual Contameter serial numbers?in my database but not enough to make any serious estimate of production number but have made very rough guide to production numbers and I have added these above in parenthesis.

Regards,

Simon Worsley
