Buddhism and Queerness

Dear Sangha,
?
The ZCD recently purchased some books on the intersectionality of Buddhism and LGBTQ+, and in some books race and class. They are on their own designated shelf space in the upstairs library. Feel free to check them out. If you have any questions about the LGBTQ+ sitting and discussion group, please reach out to me or to Ythene Wakeford.?

Metro Caring Volunteer Sign Up - February 20 (Next Thursday)

Hello Sangha,

?

As part of our?Zen Peacemaker Affiliate social activism, we?are scheduled to serve at the??Food?Bank?Denver warehouse?on February 20 from 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM as a group of 8-10 people.?Metro Caring is an anti-hunger organization that serves on many fronts.

No prior training is required. Our ZCD team typically assists in the storeroom by unpacking boxes and stocking shelves for clients. If you haven't attended before, please sign the??using this link; it will be sent directly to Metro Caring, so there's no need to download or print anything. If you have already signed the waiver, there is no need to sign it again.

Please remember that all volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes, as we will be working in an active warehouse. Wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little dirty. Additionally,?Metro Caring?asks?that volunteers refrain from parking in the Metro Caring lot to keep it available for community members. Parking instructions are attached to this email.

If possible, please allow time for parking and walking to arrive by 11:40 a.m. at?the gray volunteer doors located on the southeast?corner?of the building?adjacent to?the parking lot.?We will have a short council circle prior to?going in to get instructions from the staff.

Let me know if you plan to volunteer on that day and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

From my earlier "save the date" message - we have me, David Jordan, Jennifer Knight, Lee Baker, and Yosi Lutwak who are planning to go next Thursday - so we could use up to 5 more volunteers.

Gassho,?

David Gibson?

Hi everyone,?
?
Sharing a quick update. ?Thanks so much for your generosity to everyone who has contributed !!!! ?I am blown away by the fact that $2,010 has been raised in less than 48 hours from all over the planet. ?Truly an example of the Zen Peacemakers three tenets of not knowing, bearing witness, and taking action.

I have updated the message and increased the goal to give Joseph and his family some breathing room as he looks for new employment.

Help Joseph Otim's Kids Return to School in Uganda

Hi everyone,
?
I've started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for a friend and former colleague in Uganda who has been impacted by the USAID shutdown around the world.
?
He was working on a USAID and CDC funded program run by the Baylor Foundation which was providing HIV/AIDs and TB treatment to children in western Uganda where these remain prevalent issues. He has had to pull his kids out of school for this term and is suffering with food insecurity.

Please see the link below or QR code attached and please pass along to your networks.

Truth, Healing, and Repair as a Pathway to Peace
Wednesday, Feb. 12th, 12:00pm Eastern Time, Zoom

Author Hilary Giovale will share stories of learning that her ancestors were early settlers, colonizers, and enslavers in the United States. Through relationships with Indigenous Peoples and Lands, she began developing an awareness about the harms of colonialism that are still unfolding. She will detail a nine-year process of introspection that has helped her begin the process of building right relations, nine generations after her ancestors first immigrated from the Scottish Highlands. During this talk, Hilary will refer to a guide to making a personal reparations plan, the resources available on her website, and her recently published book Becoming a Good Relative.

Hilary Giovale is a mother, writer, and community organizer who lives on Hopi, Diné, Apache, and Havasupai land in Flagstaff, Arizona. She is a ninth-generation American settler, descended from Celtic, Germanic, Nordic, and Indigenous peoples of Ancient Europe. Hilary seeks to follow Indigenous and Black leadership in support of human rights, environmental justice, and equitable futures. As an active reparationist, her work is guided by intuition, love, and relationships. She divests from whiteness and bridges divides with truth, healing, apology, and forgiveness. She is the author of .

Tongue of a Crow (Stahlecker Selections), Peter Coyote’s book of poetry
Activity and Stillness: Practice to Avoid Becoming the Problem We’d Like to Solve
Thursday, Feb. 6th, 12pm Eastern Time, Zoom

Join a presentation by Peter Coyote: “Suzuki Roshi once said that for those of us who live outside the monastery, ‘You must be very patient.’ I’d add not only with others, but with yourself as well and the difficulties of understanding that we are often the unwitting collaborators in participating in the problems we’d like to end. Politics is the study and practice of relationships between people and that seems to me a good working definition of Buddhism (if we include the old illusory, mischief-inducing ‘self’) and we don’t lose sight of the precepts as we try to support positive change.”

PETER COYOTE has performed as an actor in over 160 films for theaters and TV. His work includes some of the world’s most distinguished filmmakers, including: Barry Levinson, Roman Polanski, Pedro Almodovar, Steven Spielberg, Martin Ritt, Steven Soderberg, Sidney Pollack and Jean Paul Rappeneau. He is a double Emmy-Award winning narrator of over 150 documentary films, including Ken Burns, National Parks, Prohibition, The West, the Dust Bowl, The Roosevelts , for which he received his second Emmy in 2015. Recently he has done Vietnam, The History of Country Music, a six hour series on Ernest Hemingway and most recently The American Buffalo for Mr. Burns.

Mr. Coyote’s memoir of the 1960’s counter-culture Sleeping Where I Fall which received universally excellent reviews, and a chapter of which won a Pushcart Prize for excellence, has been in continuous print since 1999. His second book, The Rainman’s Third Cure: An Irregular Education, about mentors and the search for wisdom, was nominated as one of the top five non-fiction books published in California in 2015. Last year he published The Tongue of a Crow, his first book of poems, and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Meet the Buddha, about his workshops with masks and improv exercise to induce altered states. His newest book, Zen in the Vernacular will be released in early 2020 by Inner Traditions Press.

Mr. Coyote is also an ordained Zen Buddhist priest and “transmitted” teacher, working with his students in Wild Dog Sangha.
