Metro Caring Volunteer Shift - Thursday, April 17
8
Hello Sangha, As part of our Zen Peacemaker Affiliate social activism, we are scheduled to serve at the Metro Caring Food Bank Denver warehouse on April 17 from 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM as a group of 8-10 people. Metro Caring is an anti-hunger organization that serves on many fronts. No prior training is required. Our ZCD team typically assists in the storeroom by unpacking boxes and stocking shelves for clients. If you haven't attended before, please sign the volunteer waiver using this link; it will be sent directly to Metro Caring, so there's no need to download or print anything. If you have already signed the waiver, there is no need to sign it again. Please remember that all volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes, as we will be working in an active warehouse. Wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little dirty. Additionally, Metro Caring asks that volunteers refrain from parking in the Metro Caring lot to keep it available for community members. Parking instructions are attached to this email. If possible, please allow time for parking and walking to arrive by 11:40 a.m. at the gray volunteer doors located on the southeast corner of the building adjacent to the parking lot. We will have a short council circle prior to going in to get instructions from the staff. Let me know if you plan to volunteer on that day and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. In addition to replying to this message – you can reach me by phone or text at 720-671-0960. Gassho, David Gibson

Friday Rally Departure time change
I am sorry, but I am seeing info that there will be choral singing presentations before the speeches tomorrow for the Bernie - AOC headlined rally at Civic Center. This probably will attract more people at earlier times. If it is not inconvenient, let's try to leave ZCD at 3 pm (as Bill originally recommended) instead of 3:20 pm Please communicate concerns or caveats. BK

Prison Dharma
Our ZCD Prison Dharma Group continues to visit men incarcerated at FCI in Englewood. I would like to offer another means to connect with incarcerated men and women through this Zen Peacemaker Group. Please contact me if you have questions. Letter Writing Campaign Compassion Prison Project has been told by several prison residents that nothing brightens their day more than hearing their name called during mail call. They have also heard from letter writers on the outside that their lives have been deeply enriched by the relationships they’ve cultivated with the incarcerated men and women with whom they communicate. Expressive writing can be therapeutic and healing and can also cultivate a sense of belonging and connection. CPP is always looking for volunteers to join their letter writing campaign. Please fill out the volunteer form and let them know that you’d like to write to someone living in a prison. CPP is a grassroots, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. May we fulfill our vows to free and save all sentient beings. JOIN ZEN PEACEMAKERS TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PRISON OUTREACH PRISON OUTREACH COMMUNITY ROOM

Supporting our Immigrant Neighbors - Options to Expand our Footprint at Metro Caring
7
Sangha, We have been volunteering at Metro Caring Food Bank for a number of years now - typically sending a crew of 5-10 volunteers for a noon - 3:30 pm shift in the warehouse and market every other month. Last fall - a number of ZCD community members provided surplus fruits and vegetables from their home gardens to add to the food supply at Metro Caring. We intend to continue this practice on a periodic basis this summer and fall. Since our volunteer shifts are during working hours - it seems worthwhile to explore other opportunities to contribute that could be done on an evening or weekend - if there is an interest in doing so. Metro Caring Volunteer Coordinator Aja Ledoux has identified hygiene kits and sack lunches as unmet needs that we could support on a periodic basis. Metro Caring serves about 1,000 clients - who largely come from the Latino community - who are under increasing duress based on the current administration's immigration policies. I'm reaching out to gauge everyone's interest in expanding our impact at Metro Caring. Do we want to increase our volunteer shifts from every other month to once a month? Do we want to continue providing surplus food from our gardens? Is there an interest in taking on the hygiene kits or sack lunches on a monthly or quarterly basis? Is there an interest in supporting Metro Caring in other ways? Consistent is the key here. It is not so much what we do - but the fact that Metro Caring can count on us to fulfill our commitment(s) that is important. I'd love to have a small group of folks who are interested in exploring these options and working with me on this. You can reach me here on the zcd.io group - email me at dgibson@... or call/text me at 720-671-0960. In the dharma, David

The intention has always been to engage without becoming a tourist; to seek unity without ‘othering’ those with whom we Bear Witness. This year we plan on walking the grounds of a deep history in the expansion of slavery, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights movement – Selma and Montgomery. We intend our Plunge in Alabama to be personal and transformative, with attendees coming away with an emotional and heart connection with the people, places, and events we witness.
