Re: Joe Zawinul & Weather Report Inspired Music...

Apologizes to everyone, the message was initially intended to be sent privately to Steve but the return address cheated me and now you're all facing the lengthy amount of links ..... hopes it will not harm anyone ;-) and that it anyway may be of interest for some of you, cheers!

Hi Steve,

We Speak Luniwaz was released in 2019 and that's the reason why I chimed in because none of the songs from this album seemed to appear on your list, for ex. "Cucumber Slumber" in your *C* list / message. Well, this was anyway good for other things and I wasn't myself aware of a Luminaz live album, which I now have ordered. Your message had also the effect to have me pick the studio Luminaz album, dust it off and give it a new spin .... probably after some years :-)

From what I've quickly checked on your list, here are a few comments:

+ on your C list, I guess Continuum / Brian Bromberg is taken from ? Or the album "Jaco" ? ()

+ on your F list, concerning Igor Willcox, if you can and like Brazilian jazz, try to spot (Youtube or alike) and check this album - to my ears amazing stuff! -

+ on your R list, the best album I heard from C.Spendel ---> ---> check the line up!

+ on your S list, I haven't been much excited by Erskine's Dr. Um .... don't know why .... probably because going in too many directions, lacking some kind of stylistical hegemony?

+ about Vasil Had?imanov, excellent keyboardist; the 3 first albums under his *band* gimmick are really good fusion with a strong Z vibe. Thereafter, he started to go more acoustic and even when he occasionally used keyboards, I felt the vibe was gone and he moved towards something different that didn't appeal to me any longer.

+ CoolAugustMoon from Arturo Stalteri: probably the most esoteric pick from your list! But this is very interesting, as it clearly shows how wide an influence JZ had on musicians, coming from very different artistic corners! Stalteri was mostly known by Italian prog afficionados because of his output with band Pierrot Lunaire or by both classical and/or ambient fans. I'll have to listen to this tune again but as far as I remember, I do not remind of any fusion bits in his music!

+ about "In a Silent Way" list, Machine Mass is an interesting eclectic *machine*, as they also released a second album dedicated to Hendrix!

+ about Mysterious Traveler, HBC in my collection (great trio) and not to keen on Lorber's smooth jazz ... haven't heard Romao's album.

Craving the bottom of my brain, I hardly found anything from memory (will have to work more intensely ;-) .... ) but this was on my mind: a track titled "For Joe" by the band CAB () + "Jaco Rocco Circus", same band, another album --->

Continuum by Victor Bailey ---> + indirectly from (track 3 "Where's Paco?)

(track 11)

Sometimes, musicians release one album or two and then disappear. If you don't know this one, please check it out and enjoy a true Z rhythm section!

(track B1)

(track 5)

Como was the keyboardist in the French fusion band Sixun and a true Z-influenced musician ... .well they had Paco in the band!

a rather unknown version of Birdland: (not especially interesting, taken from the other tunes upload on the net). One more of unknown character: . And one probably more known: . But one of my favourite is:

(track 7)

(track 3)

(track 2)

(track D2)

(Track A1). The title needs some explanation. It could be translated in English as "Zawinul versus Gillot Petré". Zawinul refers to Weather Report and Alain Gillot Petré was a very popular French TV presenter of ..... weather reports :-)

. A seldom seen cover from the Bitches Brew sessions!

(Track A4)

(Track B1)

(Track 7)

(Tracks 6 & 7). One of the most stunning current fusion & more bands from Norway. The keyboardist has been playing a lot with Terje Rypdal but also set his fingerprint on another huge Norwegian band: Motorpsycho

---> talking of inspiration ???

(track A3)

(Track A2)

Intriguing name --->

(track 2-3)

. The guitarist often has been nicknamed as the Spanish McLaughlin. He is more than that and brought in his music a true Mediterranean feel. He was among other leader of two iconic bands: Iceberg in the 70's and Pegasus in the 80's. His partner on keyboards is a fantastic player ()

Swedish tribute: (track 3)

(track 2)

(Track C1).

(last track)

(track 6)

- (last track)

(track 6)

Oddity and seldom covered:

From another interesting Spanish guitarist: (track A2)

(track B4)

(Track B1)

(track 4). Homage by Weather Update member

Even Santana covered Z ---> (track 2-8)

Several tributes (tracks 7, 10, 11)

(track 9).

(track 3) by one of the most daring French trumpeters (he also tackled and covered King Crimson)

(track 2). The band is so known that it had to be mentioned

(opening and closing tracks are a strong way to pay tribute!). Hello Kinsey!

(track 4). Homage to the boss?

(track 1)

Several tracks

(track B2)

(track 7)

(tracks 3 & 5)

(track 7)

(track 4).

(tracks 3 & 9)

(track 2)

(track 7)

A little pearl --->

(track B4)

(track 9). Likes this one

(opening track)

(track 1)

(track 6)

(track 4). Seldom cover!

I have on purpose avoided to list covers of Adderley's time Z-compositions like Mercy, Mercy, Mercy .... there are plenty of them! Same for Manhattan Transfer and Birdland.

Last and by curiosity, which are the ones listed that according to you havenothing to do with Zawinul?

...hi Pierre,?

...good to hear from you, the complete interview transcript, is available on Anil Prasad's website?
- the website is called 'Innerviews'? ?

- I thought that you would probably know of this website, it has been online for many years, Anil said that?
he has 1200 recorded interviews, I'm not sure how many are on his website, he decided recently to share?
the original recordings on YouTube, as you say 'they are not for everyone' but they certainly bring the text?
alive for me...?

best wishes -and a very happy new year 2025

Thanks Steve,

I didn’t know Anil had done this, good for him. More people need to know about his in-depth interviews and YouTube will be good for that.
