Joe Zawinul & Weather Report Inspired Music...
5
...hi folks, - like most people, I had a bit of downtime during the Covid lockdowns, and one of the things I did was a have a look on-line for music inspired by Joe and WR on iTunes, etc. I found many 'homage' compositions and recordings. Some were straight tributes after Joe's death, some recordings and interpretations straight from the WR etc songbook, some music in the same style and some maybe just using his name as a title because may be it sounded cool to them author...and a coupled that seemed to have nothing to do with Joe Zawinul at all ! I make no comment about the content of the music that I've listed, it's there on-line, if you want to check it out, and you can like it or loathe it as you wish... What I will say is that I found more than a few that I like, albums by Ron Van Stratum, UT Ghandhi and some recent stuff by Miroslav Vitous that i'd missed and a group called Room 34 is not on the list because I've only just found them and haven't listened to their renditions of WR tunes yet... And please, if you find tracks not on my lists, please let me know... Ok these are listed in alphabetical order starting at 'B' - because the list of 'A's' - is simply a long list of interpretations of 'A Remark You Made,' and I don't want you to lose interest in this too early... ...so here is the letter B list ( a png picture. It was the easiest way for me to do this...) regards Steve

Weather Report - Live 1976
3
...hi Guys, ...just noticed another 'Live' Weather Report Album on iTunes Weather Report - New York 1976 ( Live ) Firstly, the track listing is completely wrong... - the listing follows a typical set list from '76 with Jaco, but the actual tracks run as follows Track 1 is Drum Solo and is prob Alex Acuna (not Peter Erskine re album cover pic) Track 2 is Percussion Duet Alex Acuna & Monolo Bedrana Track 3 is Joe Zawinul & Wayne Shorter dueting into an early jam on the Birdland Motif - Bedrana plays the Harmonica, into Dr Honorus Causa - Directions Track 4 - Blackthorn Rose (Joe Zawinul & Wayne Shorter improvised duet) Track 5 - Gibraltar Track 6 - Birdland (?) They were not playing this in 1976, well not when I saw them in London in July of that year...so I think this is from 1977 or maybe later, there is no percussionist on this track, so it's from a different gig...probably with Peter Erskine?? Track 7 - Elegant People ( with radio announcement ?? ) Track 8 - Scarlet Woman Track 9 - Barbary Coast Track 10 - Potrait Of Tracy (Jaco Padtorius solo) Track 11 - Cannonball - Black Market ( with Wayne playing Lyricon towards the end - it sounds pre-Montreux Jazz Fest Switzerland, to me, I take it that most fans have seen that Vid It is mostly from a mixing desk, not an audience recording, but it sounds like maybe three different gigs to me - can anyone else identify this for sure?? there is a radio id at the very beginning of the track of Elegant People -but most of it sounds too raw to be a radio broadcast?? Any comments gratefully received -is there anyone on the air, is there ...anyone ! best wishes Steve B

...hi folks, Happy Birthday Joe Zawinul...RIP - gone but not forgotten.. I had a look at the sugarmegs list a few days ago ( live concert recordings ) and found some new, well new to me, weather report items there... - there's a note that an avid collector recently passed away and left his collection to the list - so there might be other stuff added to other artists... best wishes Steve B http://tela.sugarmegs.org/alpha/w.html check out 1973-11-29 Weather Report Cornell Uni Ithcca NY USA 1973-09-27 Weather Report Carver Gym Bellingham WA USA 1973-09-02 Weather Report Lennox Music Inn MA USA 1974-10-30 Weather Report Lafayettes Music Room Memphis TB USA 1974-02-27 Weather Report Westport Country Playhouse CT USA 1975-11-11 Weather Report Frankfurt Amphitheatre Main Germany 1975-11-10 Weather Report Salle Playel Paris France 1975-05-07 San Diego CA USA 1975-05-05 Weather Report Santa Monica Civic Auditorium CA USA 1977-09-26 Weather Report Kursaal Burn Switzerland 1977-06-05 Weather Report Uptgown Theatre Kansas City MO USA 1978-11-07 Weather Report Suny Stony Brook NY USA 02 ( cleaned up version of an old recording ) 1980-02-02 Weather Report Beacon Theatre NYC USA 1980-10-26 Weather Report Udine Italy

Weather Report - SERENITE - Toulon '73
7
...hi folks, continuing my theme 'is there anyone on the air' A new iTunes listing - Weather Report - Serenite Toulon '73 tracks 125th St Congress / Early Minor / Directions / In A Silent Way - It's About That Time / Sophisticated Lady / Percussion Interlude / Boogie Woogie Waltz - no other info, it sounds like a soundboard recording, I have other recordings from that time but I don't think I've heard this one before - can anyone here verify or give any other info, obviously, it's Wayne and Joe, bassist Miroslav and percussion Dom Um Romau but not sure about the drummer... ...says there are 27 members in this group - used to be a couple of hundred - so "...is there anyone on the air - is there anyone ??" best wishes Steve B

Wayne Shorter 1986 Sao Paulo Brazil
...hi folks I just found this on YouTube - check out the video's uploaded by Milan Simich Wayne Shorter 1986-00-00 RTC Sao Paulo Brazil Uploaded by Milan Simich You Tube Link cut and paste - https://youtu.be/rqruOsWK4eY Set list Plaza Real Footprints Sweet Pee Endangered Species Players Wayne Shorter sax Jim Beard keys, Alphonso Johnson bass, Ken Wood drums ( Kenwood Dennard ) my notes Not great quality visually and the beginning has been clipped but the music is amazing …I’m wondering if Kenwood Dennard ever played with Weather Report I saw him play with Brand X in the 1970's -he is noted on this as Ken Wood My Question is - does anyone here have a date for the gig or a venue - there are many interesting videos, he says he is a promoter who put on gigs in Serbia and many of the vids he has uploaded are from there Serbia / Yugoslavia best wishes Steve Ball

Weather Report - remastered audience recordings on You Tube - worth a listen...
3
...hi folks, ...a couple of days ago, on the Wayne Shorter Facebook page -and if you have not seen that there are, some lovely tributes and comments to the late genius there...a live recording of Weather Report was posted -it's a YouTube link, 'Weather Report 1973-06-30 The Jabberwocky Club Syracuse NY' OK - now if like me you have been an avid collector of all this Zawinul/Shorter/Weather Report and beyond, then you may already have this in some shape or form - BUT - and i stress the 'but' during the past 24 hours I have discovered a whole bunch of remastered and speed corrected old audience and radio broadcast - fan recordings - and the quality is so much better than those i already have...ok so how do we 'lift' them from You Tube - I use a free You Tube Downloader called 4K Video Downloader - it is very easy to use and it does the job well... One of the old recordings is Weather Report Berliner Jazztage 1975 FM - Lusitanos is miss listed it should be Scarlet Woman - but at the beginning of the medley Directions / Dr Homouris Causa / Directions - Wayne plays Lyricon - a type of sax synth, and there is a duet with Wayne & Joe, that is incredible, I wish Wayne had played more lyricon -he didn't play it much but the colours he could have produced... check out these youTubers perceval degraal - he has over 700 vids on YouTube WR - Zawinul - MIles etc etc etc... franknzappa3 - 270 vids - mixed bag... Emiliano Franco - only has 21 vids but one of them is a miss titles Weather Report 1973 - which is in reality 1975, it is really good quality vid - not simply an audio track - if anyone could tell me more about this I would really appreciate it... Vintage Music Experience - 1.7k vids - check them out Well that's enough for me...YouTube seems to have developed 'automatic mastering' so uploading audio's with a picture, kind of fake video, is a way of uploading old converted 'analogue to digital' recordings - i would love to hear anyone's comment on that...masterring is sometimes the bit of the process that trips people up... best Steve B Ok enough from me... RIP Wayne Shorter
4
...so sad to hear this news...the physical has ceased to exist in this reality, but oh boy can you feel his spirit in those recordings...I think everyone was amused by Wayne anecdotal way of communicating verbally, yet didn't that make you feel his musical communication feel more direct... ...its a sad day - rememberring the live shows and listening to my audience recordings today... RIP Wayne Shorter... I will miss you...
