"Mystery of BBC radio's first broadcasts revealed 100 years on"
Hi, This is not about YUSA but still is interesting reading for all of us. ¡°Mystery of BBC radio¡¯s first broadcasts revealed 100 years on¡± (Source: BBC News via Jon Langley) The BBC is celebrating the centenary of its first official broadcast ¨C a news bulletin that included a court report from the Old Bailey, details of London fog disruption, and billiards scores. It was broadcast by London station 2LO, but new research shows many early BBC moments came from northern England. Manchester station 2ZY aired the first children¡¯s show and introduced the first regular weather forecast. Birmingham¡¯s 5IT station broadcast the first ¡°official concert¡± The BBC that began broadcasting at 6pm on 14 November 1922 was not the British Broadcasting Corporation of today. It was in fact the British Broadcasting Company and was made up of separate stations around the country operated by different companies. London 2LO was run by the Marconi company. Manchester¡¯s station was operated by Metropolitan-Vickers. However, in these early days few records were kept of what was broadcast. But new research on the BBC¡¯s very early days has been carried out by Steve Arnold, a self-confessed Radio Times obsessive. His tricky task was to try to piece together the BBC¡¯s schedules before the Radio Times ¨C so named as it listed the times that the new medium¡¯s shows were being broadcast ¨C was first published in September 1923. He explained he found information in ¡°gossip columns [in regional newspapers] mainly, people saying we listened to this last night and this is the only record of some of these things¡±. Now, using sources from archive documents and newspapers, Steve has begun to piece together a picture of what the early BBC was doing. President Kennedy coverage
For those interested in what the broadcast days sounded like on that fateful day of November 22nd 1963 during his assassination, Corey will be presenting coverage. It will start on Tuesday November 22nd at 1:30 Eastern and 10:30 Pacific. All of this is on YUSA Orange the newest YUSA network and linked on www.yesterdayusa.net. If you are a collector of this material, you may already have it but it still is interesting listening and especially if you¡¯ve only read about it but never heard the actual broadcasts. John

Kickstarter connects creators with backers to fund projects. Rewards aren¡¯t guaranteed, but creators must regularly update backers. Campaign FAQ Updates 0 Comments 0 Community STORY RISKS ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENTSStory YESTERDAY USA has been streaming live on the Internet (and satellite radio) since 1983. For almost forty years we have been providing old-time radio programs, along with original documentaries and exclusive celebrity interviews to help preserve past network broadcasting. Historians, scholars, museum curators and other luminaries have been guests. During the coming year we plan to produce a number of documentaries and the costs involved for production require us to launch this Kickstarter. Documentary #1 THE LIFE AND CAREER OF RONALD COLMAN With the cooperation of Ronald Colman's daughter, this audio documentary will feature memories and recollections from people who worked with Ronald Colman, including an exclusive interview with Colman's biographer. Ronald Colman Documentary #2 THE JACK BENNY RADIO SHOW This documentary will feature interviews with the script writers of THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM, and children who appeared on the program known as part of the Jack Benny beavers. Hosted by Larry and John Gassman. Documentary #3 A TRIBUTE TO JOAN BENNY Joan Benny, daughter of Mary Livingstone and Jack Benny, will provide memories and recollections of her father. Not only will be recounting the days when she finished his autobiography and got it published, but she will recount little known stories that she never included in the book. Jack Benny and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson Documentary #4 A HISTORY OF THE LONE RANGER The masked man who rode the plains to combat cattle rustlers, bank robbers, masked bandits and murderers, was assisted by his faithful Indian companion from 1933 to 1954. The radio program aired three days a week and gave multiple generations more than 3,000 thrilling adventures. The history of that popular western program will be a highlight of the year with exclusive interviews with cast members from the radio show, and commentary by historian/author Martin Grams. Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as The Lone Ranger and Tonto Documentary #5 JIMMY STEWART'S RADIO CAREER Many people know Jimmy Stewart from his motion pictures but few know he had a career on radio. The most popular was a cowboy western known as The Six Shooter, which he played the title lead. This documentary will feature clips from numerous radio broadcasts, commentary from historians and an exclusive interview with his daughter Kelly. James Stewart and Jean Arthur in MR. We offer them to the masses for free on our Internet radio station. But financial reimbursement is needed. Please help us keep this momentum going for another year. We hope you continue enjoying the 24-hour programming the radio station will continue to provide in this new year. Risks and challenges No risks except not reaching our goal.
