I finally have restarted?the Swedish Heartwarmer Shawl that many Mongers knit about a decade?ago. And, I realized I had used the wrong color to begin the shawl all those years ago!?
I had to rip it as the gauge on the suggested needle was too tight for me to knit the color work comfortably so I started on a slightly bigger needle this time.

That reminds me, I started that way back when, and also put it aside (can’t remember why). Might be a good project to dig out and get to work on. I remember I did like the pattern very much, also the yarns I picked. ?

I too have the beginnings of this shawl in a bin at home. Can’t dig it out now, but maybe it is time to start anew.

And there was me thinking everyone else had finished and I was the only one to fall by the wayside. ? How’s the island this year, Anmiryam? I’m guessing you are still over there. Loved the dog pics. Jenny

Anmiryam, I’d also love to hear how the island is this year. When do you come back??
Jenny, I too thought I was the last one still working on this. It is good to hear that I am not.?
I searched for and found Steph’s video on how to do the colorwork while knitting left to right to avoid 2-color purling and am going to teach myself this technique. My goal is to have it done by Winter Solstice this year!? It is going to be gigantic I think. Maybe I’ll put it up as wall decor ツ

Gigantic is good for wrapping up in. And I think historically the shawl corners were passed around the front of the body, then back around ?and then tied behind to get a cross-over type protection for the front in addition to the warmth on the back. So they were probably meant to be huge. ? Jenny ?

Kinda related but not - Anyone have a look at Cat Bordhi's last?collection? Momo cowls. They are lovely and clever. Going on my list, and I have a bunch of Malabrigo that I can use for one of them. Not that I need the list to grow. Right now, I've got an Umaro going, a garter stitch no pattern sweater on huge needles, a Birdsong, and I bought a Kate Davies kit for a goldenrod yellow cardi that is meant to replace a goldenrod yellow cardi that moths got to.

Years (maybe 50?) ago, I fell in love with one of the Swedish-type shawls in a McCall’s (maybe) Knitting magazine. That’s how it was shown, Jenny, Sort of backwards. Never did get around to casting on. ? ?

I have the yarn for the Heartwarmwr - maybe I’ll even knit it one of these days! With retirement looming and global warming really changing our climate here I’m not sure what I should do about the many bins of wool that I own - I’m down to wearing sweaters maybe 20 days a year.?

Steph,? I had a question after watching the video. Maybe you'll remember. It looks as if you are catching the floats after every other stitch, like the Philosopher's Wool people used to recommend. Is that correct? I can see that you catching the working thread but I couldn't see why so I assumed this and want to verify that it is correct.

I can’t remember, and can’t check because I don’t have it at home. From the photo I think you’re right. ?It makes sense to keep the floats short so they don’t catch on stuff. If you’re using a grabby wool it would probably be fine to have longer floats. ? Steph?

Yes, I'm using Mountain Colors Bearfoot, which is grabby but I think I will do the same. It is more rhythmic to do it that way and as you say, it keeps the reverse looking neat and there is nothing to snag on things.?

I absolutely have never managed to learn to knit backwards, but I’ve found that two-handed purling isn’t too bad (for me) and even adapted the Philosopher’s Wool method to work with purling, though it’s been a long time since I did stranded colorwork that wasn’t in the round. Melisande ?

Therese, I would steek the Wild Apple. i steeked my Rose Lace Collar and am planning to steek my Swan when I get to it. The gauge is fine and the yarn is sticky and ?it works beautifully. The reason I’m not steering the Swedish Heartwarmer is that it is a shawl with a crocheted edging. I would have to completely change the edging to cover the steek and it is a much heavier yarn (a dense sock weight yarn) which makes for bulk.
I believe some of the people who made it then did steek it but ran into the edging/facing problem.?

I did a picot edge on that and I wear it as a jacket. On the Swan, I am going to make button bands. I will pick up next to the steek and knit them. The steek naturally folds back on itself and I just folded and tacked it down, I think. I have to see if I folded it or not.
