Re: What are you hearing?

Would be interested in how you are thinking about executing. Unfortunately, we will have a 3rd grader as well and managing two pods/schedules seems daunting...

What are you hearing?
#FallOptions
Hey folks,
With LA and San Diego's news this AM, and reading OEA's stance on safety, my tea leaves say we want to be planning for a fully remote fall.? I know there might be some scarcity feelings around resources for those (like us) who aren't prepared to handle another semester of being a teacher for a kid who struggles with distance learning.? ?We've been talking to the Farivar's about a shared tutor option (but keeping it super small because pod/safety/etc.), and I'm sure others are investigating how they can support this going ahead.? EVERY WAY IS A GOOD WAY.? And, I love the idea of hearing how others are thinking of navigating.?? I know that East Bay Dance Center has mentioned it will fill gaps and support remote learning, and I'm hoping folks who hear about similar options.? We are Adventure Time folks, but haven't heard anything yet if they will be able to expand their offering in a safe way. Are other folks willing to share what they learn about options?? ? Thanks in advance, Betsy |

Good to know! I’m no sure how she’ll feel about a spider. She was hoping for a unicorn robot ?

Camp Kinda - Free Virtual Camp
#SummerLearning
We just signed up for this camp that we learned about from a fellow 2nd grade parent. I don't know how it works and am not setting any expectations. It's free virtual camp, so we'll see how next week works out.
Starting on May 31, you’ll get a weekly email from us on Sunday with a link to the week’s activities. We’ll also let you know what supplies your kids will need over the course of the week (we’ll keep it simple, we promise) and offer a suggested family activity connected to the week’s theme, along with a few other things just for parents and caregivers. You can review the week’s activities and decide what you’d like your kids to do when—or just share the link with them and go back to your coffee. And you can always view any previous weeks’ activities at?. During the week, your kids will get 3-4 hours’ worth of activities each day. They’ll use the Camp Kinda website to go through them. Some will be online, like watching a short documentary, while others will be offline, like creating their own secret code system. Most will be best for kids in grades 3-8, but we’ll also offer simpler options for younger campers where appropriate. Each day’s activities are carefully curated by teachers and other experts who know how kids think and are passionate about their topic. Camp Kinda is built to be flexible and fun, so there’s no wrong way to do it. Pick and choose activities here and there, follow the whole week’s agenda in order, do some days but not others; whatever works best for your family. Your child may not love every week’s theme, but we bet they’ll find something interesting in most of them—and even a couple hours of Camp Kinda is better than video games all day long. And who knows? Maybe they’ll discover something they’re wild about along the way. Questions? Feel free to email us at?campkinda@.... |

We did. It needs a lot of help from the adult for this house. Not my favorite.? ? |
Avid4Adventure Zoom camp next week
#SummerLearning
Does anyone want to join Aiden and his pal in a zoom camp next week?
8:30-11am, live with yoga and music and nature.? $99 we have a couple of folks, but they need 3 more to run the session.? ?- b |

开云体育?Yes, today will be session 3 of 4, and so far so good. It feels more advanced than expected, but I see it as a positive challenge. They’ve learned about electricity, batteries, switches, leds, and motors. There are 5 kids. The “robot” is a 8-legged spider that mimics the movement of a real spider.? ___ Ben Yee On May 27, 2020, at 9:09 PM, rebecca.farivar@... wrote:

Did you guys end up doing the robot building course? How was it? Nora is interested but her key question is, "what does the robot do?" Thanks!

What Learning Apps Do You Use
#Resources
Hi Parents - what learning apps/games have you had good experiences with? We have been limiting iPad time to RAZ Kids and ST Math. We have a sight words app and Khan Academy, but feel lukewarm on them. Thanks!

Re: Communication from Summer Camps?

We heard from Dimond Rec and they are canceling camps week by week and offering credit to account or full refund.

Re: Communication from Summer Camps?

We heard from the Zoo that they are piloting a virtual camp.? But I'm not sure that's going to work for us.
Outschool has been a winner for me so far, and I'm going to look at their "summer camps" at least through mid-June. Somewhere in there we will hopefully be able to do some vacation.? If anyone wants to share plan with me, that would be awesome.?? |

Nice! Looks fun. Thanks for sharing,?Betsy. I just ordered the kit with?priority shipping, so hoping it will arrive in time for this session. If timing doesn't work out, we'll?probably enroll in the next one as a fallback. Regardless, we can still coordinate some virtual robot play/sharing. Build a robot class
#Spring20Lessons
Aiden is going to take an other Outschool class. I’m having luck balancing this with other content. They have a class to build a robot - $65 for the class and $20 for the kit. Thursday at 10 for the next 4 weeks. Nearly an hour.?

Re: Birds

Morgan is down for the challenge, and I created a photo album for us to upload and try to identify.? I did most of the identifying... but I'm excited to compare what we found and what others found.? :)
We had fun. Or I had fun getting out my mega zoom lens for my old dSLR that never gets use anymore. ?-bbb |
Birds
#Spring20Lessons
Ok. It may kill me, but I’m going to try and take Aiden on a photo scavenger hunt for the birds of Oakland.? here’s a doc with the species specific to Oakland Hills (nearby). If I can get him out the door without introducing too many swear words to the vocabulary list, I’ll share how many we found and maybe challenge his classmates to go for a walk — or even just look on the backyard.?

Re: Communication from Summer Camps?

We just got word from Aurora this morning. We were wait-listed for the Spanish camp and it just got moved online.? The Zoo hasn't said anything yet, and nothing on their website.? They have the staffing and space to do small groups, so we'll see.? But I'm not overly optimistic.

Skyla was also signed up for Head Royce - cancelled. She is also signed up for Fairyland camp for several weeks but we have not received any final word. It's hard to imagine them being open for physical camp, honestly...

Re: Communication from Summer Camps?

Dylan and Jonathan were signed up for a LEGO camp at Aurora School for mid-July. They just sent out an email that they will be offering online camp options at a lower price. They have 3-hour Zoom sessions in the morning and afternoon. While it sounds great on paper, I can't see paying for these Zoom sessions when my kids will most likely just be building with their LEGO on their own like they normally do and only marginally engaged with camp instructors over Zoom. Possibly just the skeptic in me. We were mostly signed up for the Dimond Rec and Trackers camps and have not heard anything yet.

Communication from Summer Camps?
#SummerLearning
Curious to hear what communication others have received from summer camps. Have your received notices of them being officially cancelled or are they making alternative arrangements??
Nora was signed up for Head Royce summer camp that was going to start mid-June and they are fully cancelled. She's still currently signed up for Cal Explorer Camp that was going to start mid-July and haven't heard anything from them yet. I was poking around on other camp's websites and the few I looked at didn't have anything posted about being cancelled.? |
