Plans for May/June #SummerLearning

Are any other parents interested in creating a pod, and using or some other resource to create some more structured online learning and hopefully with a group of his classmoates?? I'm open to ideas/etc., but thinking it might be great to work with 5 other kids to set up something to help us navigate balancing all the things.? Aiden needs engagement and direction.

I'd love to hear other thoughts, too.? I know this won't be for everyone.?

Re: Plans for May/June #SummerLearning

Here's a course I'm considering for math starting 5/18:

Maybe one other friend will join?

Online Community Rules #Alert

Thanks for joining this online community! This is a volunteer effort and optional way of staying engaged with Room 19/Teacher Yari's Kindergarten Class 2019-2020.? Our hope is to support one another through the transition to first grade, both emotionally and academically in whatever way we each need.

1 Be Kind and Courteous
We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's treat everyone with respect. Healthy disagreement is natural, but kindness and compassion are always required.

2 No Hate Speech or Bullying
Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying or attacks of any kind aren't allowed, and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated.

3 Respect Everyone's Privacy
Being part of this group requires mutual trust. Authentic, expressive discussions make groups great, but may also be sensitive and private. What's shared in the group should stay in the group.? Any screenshot, share, or quote content from the community must include explicit permission from the original poster first.?

4 No Spam and Easy on Promotion
Overt promotional for self-profit, spam, and irrelevant links aren't allowed.?

As to rule enforcement: at first violation, a poster will be put back to moderation.? A subsequent violation will result in removal from the group.? Members may report a violation to the admins, and admins make joint determination if there's been a violation.? We're all parents in this together, so we hope this doesn't happen.

Buddy up in an Outschool class? #Spring20Lessons

Hey folks,

Aiden is begging for some extra attention during work hours, and I’m thinking I might try a couple of Outschool classes this week. ?There’s a direct drawing class on jellyfish which sounds fun?

anyone else interested in giving it a chance with Aiden??

Communication from Summer Camps? #SummerLearning

Curious to hear what communication others have received from summer camps. Have your received notices of them being officially cancelled or are they making alternative arrangements??

Nora was signed up for Head Royce summer camp that was going to start mid-June and they are fully cancelled. She's still currently signed up for Cal Explorer Camp that was going to start mid-July and haven't heard anything from them yet.

I was poking around on other camp's websites and the few I looked at didn't have anything posted about being cancelled.?

Re: Communication from Summer Camps? #SummerLearning

Dylan and Jonathan were signed up for a LEGO camp at Aurora School for mid-July. They just sent out an email that they will be offering online camp options at a lower price. They have 3-hour Zoom sessions in the morning and afternoon. While it sounds great on paper, I can't see paying for these Zoom sessions when my kids will most likely just be building with their LEGO on their own like they normally do and only marginally engaged with camp instructors over Zoom. Possibly just the skeptic in me. We were mostly signed up for the Dimond Rec and Trackers camps and have not heard anything yet.

Re: Communication from Summer Camps? #SummerLearning

Skyla was also signed up for Head Royce - cancelled. She is also signed up for Fairyland camp for several weeks but we have not received any final word. It's hard to imagine them being open for physical camp, honestly...

Re: Communication from Summer Camps? #SummerLearning

We just got word from Aurora this morning. We were wait-listed for the Spanish camp and it just got moved online.? The Zoo hasn't said anything yet, and nothing on their website.? They have the staffing and space to do small groups, so we'll see.? But I'm not overly optimistic.

Ok. It may kill me, but I’m going to try and take Aiden on a photo scavenger hunt for the birds of Oakland.?

here’s a doc with the species specific to Oakland Hills (nearby). If I can get him out the door without introducing too many swear words to the vocabulary list, I’ll share how many we found and maybe challenge his classmates to go for a walk — or even just look on the backyard.?

alternately, I’ll take a bunch of pictures with him and let’s see if we can identify them.?

?- b

Morgan is down for the challenge, and I created a photo album for us to upload and try to identify.? I did most of the identifying... but I'm excited to compare what we found and what others found.? :)

We had fun. Or I had fun getting out my mega zoom lens for my old dSLR that never gets use anymore.
