Need A Black Key - CS80
3
Hello all, Scott here (synthRodriguez) and new to the group. I recently bought a CS80 project machine which will soon receive attention. One of the black keys took a hit at some point; it has a pretty good chunk out of it. Would someone have a spare they would be willing to sell? Thanks! Scott in Ohio

L'il help needed..
18
Fellow CS-80 owners, with the power off, could you please do me a solid and measure the resistance between the +15V power rail on the card riser (the lower bar that the cards screw into) and ground. I am trying to figure out if the 70 ohms I'm getting is normal or if this is indicative of a partial short. Thanks! Cheers, Jonathan

Cheers, Jonathan I don't have one here, but 15V/70 ohms = 214 mA, which seems a low amount of current for all of those voice boards. But since it's not powered on, it might be a reasonable impedance for this situation. Certainly 70 ohms is nowhere near a short circuit, given the large amount of circuitry present. It's not clear to me if a shorted component/capacitor would NOT show a short when no power was present, but then go short when power was applied...I don't think so... jkjelec Reply to sender <mailto:jkjelec@...?subject=Re%3A%20L%27il%20help%20needed%2E%2E> . CS-80: Output level down to nothing
2
Has anyone experienced this. The Cs80 output level from one day to the next went from normal to nothing. It started getting lower and lower and now I got no output level at all. Could it be that the Audio Amp. Ic (HA 1452W) has gone south? Thanks

WTB - Yamaha CS-70M
2
Hello all, I'm a longtime lurker but wanted to say thanks for this group -- its a treasure trove of information and resources. I love vintage Yamaha synths and have a few myself -- CS-30, CS-50/60, CS-40M, SK-30. I've been looking to acquire a Yamaha CS-70M and was wondering if anyone might have one for sale. If so, please drop me a line to discuss. I also have a fair number of other synths I may be willing to part with if there's interest in a trade + cash deal. I'm based in western Canada (BC) if shipping is required. If you happen to be in BC, Alberta, or Washington state/Oregon I'm also willing to drive a fair distance to acquire one. Thanks so much... hope to hear from you.

CS-80 + FC7
4
Hi all. After one year (moved to a new house) I switched my CS-80 on and fortunately everything still works fine, but the FC-7 connected to it. The malfunction is: when I push the pedal forward it raises the volume /wha-wha regularly, but when I go back down to the “low “ position, the volume takes some seconds before fading. In other words, when used fot raising the volume it works, when lowering it, it is … delayed. Like a long release… Any clue? Thanks Fernando

YM26600/26700 IC Alternatives

Has anyone ever looked into modern alternatives for these fragile and rare 40-year old chips? I am wondering if it'd be possible to program an Arduino to handle key coding/assigning and D/A conversion on the KAS and KBC boards. Cheers, Jonathan

CS-80 tech question: initial velocity problem on TSB board
6
Hello, I am looking for technical help for a Yamaha CS-80. The issue it is having is: a cluster of six notes (G2 to C3) generate full volume at all times when keyed, no matter how softly they are played. I have traced the problem to IC4 (a newer 4051 multiplexer) on the TSB circuit board, and have tested the chip with a multimeter. The INH pin 6 is not stuck high and is toggling as it should. Pin 3 (Com in/out), however, is stuck at +15V for some reason, and I can't seem to figure out why. I believe this voltage should be around 5V as initial velocity is triggered and approach 15V as the poly aftertouch is applied. I tried swapping in another 4051 from IC3, and the problem remains exclusive to the IC4 socket and the same cluster of keyboard notes. I've also checked the solder underneath for shorts and opens and compared it to the other 4051's on the board and haven't found anything out of the ordinary. Does anyone have any idea as to where I should look next? Could the IC7 (a JRC 072BD dual op-amp, also a recent replacement of the original 4558) that pin 3 goes to be involved? Could a faulty TKC board component be causing the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Cheers, Jonathan

cannot seem to access CS80 group!

Hi Florian - I think you are the moderator of the CS80 group? Do you know anything about changes to Yahoo's programming that has been causing problems? I do not seem to be able to access the CS80 group - nor any other yahoo group i am a member of! Have you heard of this? Do you know if there's another way to access it (apart from the links in the e-mails)? I am using Firefox on an apple computer (since it became impossible for similar reasons to access yahoo groups on safari some time last year) thank you very much and sorry to bother you

My name is Murilo from Brazil and I have a Yamaha CS80 for around 7 years. In those 7 years it’s been through repair and now I have no sound out of it. The CS80 powers normally, but no sound… Only low noise (if I switch on the chorus, i can hear it affecting this noise) Brazil is a crazy country and we don’t have enough technicians to repair it… So, I’m wondering if you can help me in any way. I’ve already changed death master VCA (chip Ig00159) and nothing… Do you guys have any ideas? I have the possibility to change for a Arp 2600. I know is a different beast, but.... Should I? Just out of curiosity, what synth would exchange for If you guys were in my boots? Thanks In advance!!! -- Murilo Faria (Mura) aldotheband.com

Yamaha CS-60 issues: sub osc LFO > VCO not working + random bad notes
6
Hi all, I have a Yamaha CS-60 I recently acquired from a local seller that has MIDI kit installed. 1. Upon testing I noticed the sub oscillator LFO > VCO slider does not work/effect the sound (however, LFO > VCF and LFO > VCA do work fine). What is the likely culprit for this and how easy is it to fix? 2. I notice after getting the synth home and playing it for awhile, that intermittent random bad notes would happen when playing the keys. It doesn't seem to matter what keys and it seems to happen randomly... ie after a few minutes or after 20 minutes. As an example, if I'm playing a scale and I hit one of the keys (ie a middle C), that will give a severely out of tune note. Coming back to the key immediately after and its in tune again. Any ideas what could cause random bad note behaviour across the keyboard? It doesn't seem to be a specific voice, but I have no idea what is triggering a bad note to occur randomly. Perhaps the MIDI retrofit messed something up, or when the synth was transported to my place the voice cards got jiggled around from bumpy driving? Any suggestions on where to look for fixing this/effort required would be most welcome. I'd need to take it to a tech and hoping it won't be an expensive fix. Thanks.

CS50 Calibration
7
Hello, first all, thank you for approval of my membership in the group. I'm a owner of a CS50, that I purchased recently. The synth need a complete calibration, and I want to ask you what is the best documentation to do this. I've seen that there is an adjustment procedure document for the CS80, but I haven't found a similar document for CS50. For what I've understand some parts are common in the two synths (e.g. the Voice cards), but I'm not sure if it is correct to follow the adjustment procedure described in the CS80 doc. Thank you very much for your help! Roby (Italy)

IG00150, ribbon controller and levers
6
Hello All, currently I am repairing a CS-80 which had a lot of problems, it was not powering up and several custom Yamaha chips where dead on serveral boards. I managed to get most of the chips but I can not find a IG00150 also known as M51620P. I need one for the Chorus, syntparts does not have them and I tried a lot of sources. So if someone has stock please let me know. The ribbon controller is not working, I opened the ribbon yersterday and found out that the spring inside is in a lot pieces. Are there replacement for these or are there other solutions to get the ribbon working again. Is it possible to open the control levers? Some of them are a bit noisy/scratchy. Thanks for all the input! Maarten
