lower part out of tune

A friends CS80 just went out of tune on the lower part only. All voices jump up and down more cents than is pleasing to the ear, but still within a semitone. Upper part is stable and nice. My friend said he smelled somthing burnt, but I haven't been able to check anything personally yet.

Any ideas what could be the cause of this? SH-board sends same voltages to all M-boards, but is there anything in between there that could go astray?

Thanks,

Stuck sounds from the CS80

Hi everybody CS80 users,

I recently got a short during calibration on the KAS board, which blew one of the PSU fuse, and created a low resistance in the system, which i could quickly solve by identifying and changing the corresponding damaged IC.So everything should be set to normal right now, all resistances are in the correct range but when i power up the unit, a constant sound plays, kinda detuned one.I can play notes on top of that sound, even though the notes played are not in tune neither, and somewhat hazardous depending on the preset used.Eveything else (tremolo, chorus, ring modulator, filters...) seem to work, but memory/user presets which produce no sound.

I suspected the fuses again, since this is close to what happened to one user recently here (and his fuses were off finally) but here, they are all ok.

Any suggestions to help focus my searches?

Thanks

Re: Clean CS-80 Overall Circuit Diagram

Hi David,

Of course I'm aware of the two sites you mention. I have browsed them both more than once. Without them, my project would certainly not be well under way as it is today.

I want to share my reworked CS-80's overall circuit diagram with the people interested in studying it. The original printed version has so many errors (just to mention drawing errors or oversights), I can't count them. I fixed most of them with the diagrams of the service manual and the circuit boards. Working on the interactive diagram for the site, lately, I still found a few errors (less important, but errors anyway). Sometimes, the layout is unduly complex (but all was hand-drawn then). I try to make it more immediately understandable.

I just uploaded the interactive diagram. For the moment, only one third is interactive (the left part).
I hope it will be of some help for newcomers who wish to understand the inner working of the beast.

Joachim

Forgot to mention - I really like the job you did on the diagram! ?

Hi Joachim,

It’s always great having folks collect and provide documentation for synths. ? However, I don’t know if you’ve seen some of the existing sites that already have done this. ?Crow’s page, , has been around a long, long time with lots of good info. ?My site,??, has been around many years and has owners and service manuals for almost every Yamaha analog synth along with lots of pics of work on them. ?

I’ve looked into setting up my own forum to replace this Yahoo group since it doesn’t support things like posting RTF or images. ?However, I haven’t had the time to get it all working.

I just created a dedicated site where I'll share several resources concerning the CS-80 (among other things).
So I moved the Overall Circuit Diagram there:
??
and removed it from the Files section of the group.
That should make things easier for everyone.

Sorry for the initial difficulties and thank you Florian for having hosted the file in between.

Looking for a CS-80 power supply !

Hi ! I am looking for a power supply for the cs-80 . if someone got that in stock ! ( maybe !!, ) .

thats exactly what I did... it said the cs80_diagram.zip was corrupt....? what is your default unzipping program on your version of windows 7?
?
perhaps I DLoaded too soon.... seems yahoo informed by email?me 6 files were added 20 minutes?after I replied...

Hello,

It worked for me fine on Windows 7

download all five files
CS80_Diagram.z01
CS80_Diagram.z02
CS80_Diagram.z03
CS80_Diagram.z04
CS80_Diagram.zip
put them in one directory
doubleclick on CS80_Diagram.zip

For those who still are hav'ing troubles I uploaded it unzipped to my

Re: Clean CS-80 Overall Circuit Diagram

Downloading and unzipping the files works fine for me.

Here are the exact file sizes for you to check:
size of files with extensions . z01 to .z04 is 3MB exactly (that is 3?145?728 bytes)
size of file with extension .zip is 2?101?579 bytes.

The split zip files were created with Winzip, which does a good job as a rule.
I tested the unzip process using Windows 7 native zip, and it works like a charm.

I'm sorry for having to split the file, but there is a 10 MB limit on file uploads imposed by Yahoo and furthermore, I could never upload files greater than 3 MB.

Same here, I'm on Mac... but maybe the reason is I had few days ago HD crash and still didn't re-install all my apps...

Thanks in advance.

Clean CS-80 Overall Circuit Diagram

In the last five years, I’ve been working on the CS-80 Overall Circuit Diagram.

I cleaned the original scan, but also added colors to help localize the boards.

A lot of typos and oversights had to be fixed too (using either the service manual, or the CS-80 itself as a reference when needed). The layout of some parts was also modified to make understanding easier (this is particularly noticeable with the M board).

The file is provided as is.
If you still find errors, feel free to use this topic to list them. I'll update the file.

The file is a 14MB jpeg. Due to file uploading issues, I had to put it in a five parts split zip.

there were different runs of oscillator chips....
I did the upgrade for all 16 chips, sadly, one chip was a dud and I had to revert both chips in the "8th" cards to the original...

the new chips had a diode added to the circuit.. (been over 20 years), and the slope of the tuning to heat is different for each chip type...

the newer set is more stable, and doesn't shift as far with the warm up, I like getting the pitch bang on as far as the Octave calibration goes and if the adjustment is a little touchy and doesnt stabilise in full octaves, I stretch it a little during tuning so the lower octaves are a little flatter than the top octaves...? when the lid closes, the CS tends to drift? the lower octaves slightly sharp... keep that in mind.

when a string section tunes at the concert hall, the overall string section puposely tune flat and sharp the open strings so the overall section sounds lush...

Maybe it is possible, but is it good to tune it so precisely? I think a certain out-of-tune behavior is normal, and even desirable, in the case of polyphonic analog synth, also random changes in tuning.

For the exact tuning we have digital instruments, many of them with microtonal tuning ability, so we can emulate random detuning, and there's even Random Pitch function on some DX models.

I have been tuning my CS80 again after several minor repairs and adjustments. I was wondering where to stop knowing, that it's good enough.?

My CS80 behaves different cold to warm and that is perfectly normal. I tune it warm of course I have managed to tune it that when I turn it on cold - I hear banging of waves on several voices. After a warm-up they slow down and begin sweeping slowly.

?Other voices are very stable even cold and they stay that way after.?

I hear very slow sweeping that is good enough for me. Is it Ok or should tuned CS80 stay dead stable without barely any sweeping at all between channels (is that even possible)?

Re: 15v data

don't forget you could possibly have a failing supply under load ONLY, so it will fool you at first. Try loading the supply itself (no baords connected) with
the same load measurements as you are getting now, and if the supply fails, your boards aren't causing it per se. The design doesn't have the normal type voltage regulators which are notorious for having "foldback", but they CAN fail in a similar way..... at least for a while....eventually that changes to a full out failure, which is when it gets easy to figure out the problem.?
Although this would explain your having difficulty finding a bad board,
you could still have an impedance issue on the other lines. However, applying a bit of logic, you should be able to see
that just a few thousand ohms on each of the other output voltages,
would produce a "sane" level of current draw, and the supply should NOT fail under those conditions, thus pointing more definitely to the supply itself. Good luck
Tim

Thank you very much,

That is what I am getting as well... Now I need to find the component that is making the PSU trip!? All 15V related boards are disconnected and have been tested individually and not one seems more suspect than the other!!!

Again if anyone has data on the power consumption for individual boards or for the the over all unit...? At this point any suggestion is welcome!!!

Cheers

Hi Martin & all!

Couple of notes from your forum manager here. ?First, I’ll try and take some measurements in a couple of weeks for this.

Second, I’ve been in massive crazy mode for the last few months but hope to have something resembling a life very soon. ?I was laid off a few months back and soon discovered there were no jobs for my work (ASIC design and verification) within commuting distance of my house. ?My wife and I were thinking of downsizing our house a bit anyway so we went into a whole process of simultaneously?
Fixing up our house (about 10 years deferred maintenance and me putting holes in walls)
Getting an agent and setting up to sell house
Me taking some short technical classes in San José?
Me signing up and starting an online extension program through UCI (Univ California Irvine)
Me dealing with EDD (California unemployment office)
Me taking many professional development and job search programs
Me spending hundreds of hours updating résumé and looking for jobs (in Southern California!!!)
Wife and I searching for new place to live near potential jobs and still commuting range to OC for family and wife’s choir.
Looking at many new houses in Northern San Diego county and spending untold hours analyzing commute times and nearby shopping and dozens of other parameters.
Me having some surgery (after lots of time looking into health insurance - which I have to pay all of now)

Finally, about 8 weeks ago, in a matter of a couple of days, we sold our old house, bought a new house, and I got a job! ?All great news but the last few weeks has been total insanity of packing, moving, unpacking, fixing stuff, working and learning new job, learning to hate traffic on new freeways, my Macbook Pro dying (eventually fixed for free - thank you American Express extra year warranty coverage!!!), and going nuts with the last few weeks of the two online classes I was taking and weeks behind on (one done 2 days ago and other have project and final this weekend).

Just a little going on so I haven’t done much in the CS80 world. ?I have one I need to finish a house call on in the Hollywood hills. ?Got it figured out and partly fixed on first visit but I didn’t have any $0.05 diodes with me!!! ? Other is massive overhaul and mod-additions that’s been at my house(s) for way too long but luckily very reasonable owner has been about as slammed as I’ve been so hasn’t been bad about the delays - and he has lots of other synths :)

Anyway, classes done this weekend (and only taking one class next quarter - starting mid January) and have two weeks off at end of the month (unfortunately, unpaid since I’m a contractor right now…). ?I plan to spend the two weeks sleeping a lot and finishing the unpacking which will clear out the area in my garage that will be my new synth workshop. ?So, barring unforeseen circumstances (hard to type that without breaking out into laughter) I’ll be back on synth stuff by New Year!

Sorry - that went on a bit long so I’ll stop now.

?David ?(now in Vista, CA - even further away from most of the synth owners up in L.A.)
