FT-301D steady on "tx"
6
Hi from Vienna ! I joined the group because I got an FT-301D from a silent-key (sk abt 8 years ago). The trx stood for this long time in a basement on the floor. Unfortunately with no mic and no power-cord. Took it home and put it on 12 V. Meter-lamp is ok, the frequency-display is not 100% ok, some digits are missing, but I read this is kind of "normal" :-) But...there was no reception...no audio coming out of the speaker. A little later I realized that the trx it on "tx" even with no mic plugged in. MOX was not enabled. Then I checked all the plug-in-cards (nice design !), but again no difference. So I pulled out the VOX-unit and...voila - there was reception ! Faults that I found: 1) The always on "tx" - problem and 2) the reception in USB and LSB is not equal on all bands. e.g. on 40m there is nearly no rx on LSB (USB is ok) Maybe it is just a case of alignment... ? Anyone had similar problems or knows what might be the problem with this trx ? Rx without the VOX-unit is ok now, power output is also ok (100W CW/SSB, 25W AM), modulation is ok... Is it worth repairing it ? Or shall I sell it for spare parts ? It is in a nice old shape with some scratches on it, but the front looks really nice. Should be from a very early series, it has the 11m-band between 15m and 10m, but its not the "CBM"-version. Any help is appreciated ! :-) Thanks a lot for reading, 73 from Vienna/Austria Othmar, OE1SOW

Ft-301ad blinking s-meter no transmit
24
hello everyone, I¡¯m rescuing a ft-301ad from the scrap yard. The issue I¡¯m currently wrestling with is that the protection circuit is always engaged, preventing transmission. I have the linear amp removed from the rear and the 2 BNC connectors jumpered and the radio connected to a dummy load. When the radio is powered on, the light is already blinking. I don¡¯t see any obvious damage inside the rig and was hoping this might be something people have had trouble with before. The pb-1445 described in the manual available online appears to be slightly different than mine, but I did try adjusting the 2 adjustable pots on the board that are similar to those mentioned in the manual for adjusting the protection circuit. No change was observed. Anyway, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction! KI7WQH

Rubber plug on right side
3
Hi all, and thanks for welcoming me into the group. I'm Pino IK2HEW and own an FT-301D since I was sixteen. After more than 25 years I've powered up it again and now I'm trying to restore it. I have a couple of questions for experts. Despite my research, I never got an answer. Does anybody know the use of the 3.5 mm jack below the rubber plug on the rigth side of the case ? It disconnect power to the premix board and route the signal coming from the jack to the RF board in place of the one coming from the premix. The second question concern the know differences between the FT-301D and FT-301AD versions. I never found any document on this subject. Thank you all in advance for your help. Pino.

Does anyone have these? I can't find them anywhere. You'd think some CBer would be selling them on Ebay, but no...

FT-301D Restoration Complete

I created one nice unit out of 2 parts rigs. My quest was greatly extended by user manual errors and rabbit holes I wasted a lot of time on. I put some photos in Photos. What I fixed/replaced: o Display board replaced with Elcon EL-31 ¨C see Files for details. o Added Elcon excellent vfo stabilizer ¨C see Files for details. o Fixed low SSB output problem after way too many rabbit holes User Manual in wrong on Page 19. IF Board Q403 does NOT amplify the DSB signal. It is a 0.3 unity gain impedance matching stage. The schematic is wrong on the IF Board. Both Q403 and Q404 drain connects are shown connecting back to the gates ¨C dumb. They should be connecting to D404 8 vdc, one horizontal line below. Removed the SSB filter on the NB Card and wired NB Card back to factory configuration for no Speech Processor. Even when RF Processor off, the path is through 2 series connected SSB filters. If the filters are not identical, one can never get the carrier set point right, one SSB will have low power out. I tried some filters from spare boards to no avail. I am going to use the MFJ-653 anyways so I don¡¯t need screaming weeeeeemy DX audio anyway. o I re-calibrated all except band pass, none were very far off so goodness. o Cabinet ¨C came out well. I painted the trim ring with gloss black appliance enamel. I over-sprayed cabinet with semi-gloss black enamel. o I cleaned all switch wafers with DeOxit o I cleaned all pots with DeOxit Fader Lube o Power out can go up beyond 160 watts but I adjusted the pot on the NB card not to exceed 110 to be safe. o Added 12vdc white LED to meter side light, looks nice, photo is exaggerated bright. o Replaced burned out bulbs in the center indicator for VFO, Clarifier, EXT. This is a horrible job given Yeasu epoxied the the holder into the back of the face plate - stupid overkill. Summary CONS o Not many flaws, this is an excellent design and after mods is even mo better. o Little plastic cover push fasteners are unobtanium. PROS o Internal speaker is the best I¡¯ve ever heard, no need for external speaker. o Carrier suppress (after fader lube applied to pot) is best I¡¯ve ever seen on older radios. -70db o AM is superb both XMT and REC with optional AM Board. My REA monitor shows 120% positive with a 30 watt carrier and perfect wave forms. o Semi-breakin CW and VOX works well. o SSB quality is excellent as long as carrier set point is 6 db down. With 50 watts output at 1,000Hz mic input, 2mV, 300 Hz mic in must be 6db down at 12.5 watts out. Set this ONLY after a long warm up because there is minor drift of the SSB oscillators on the AF Board. o Small package and styled beautifully. o Someone installed a CB crystal (41.5 MHz) in the AUX position and it works. o NB works well and 60Hz pulse crapolla. o REC sensitivity and selectivity are excellent ¨C comparing to my FLEX 5000 and KWM-2A

Rex, Are you the group owner? I posted an intro message to the group last week and haven't seen that it made the list - awaiting moderator approval. Thanks - 73 Fred, N8YX

Hello
10
I am the new owner of an FT-301 (not the D version), and have been searching for a little hideaway among people that recognize such a boat anchor. They certainly are quirky radios, but I enjoy it very much. Hopefully my lack of a digital display doesn't get me summarily dismissed. 73, Nick (N1CCK)

LSB Issue
Nick, It sounds like your LSB crystal has drifted way off, the trimmer capacitor needs cleaning or someone tweaked it sans knowledge. You could do the following without test gear. 1. With an antenna attached, tune to 40 SSB. Turn volume up and switch back and forth between USB and LSB. When optimal, you will heard no difference in the noise content, a balances mix of highs and lows in the noise. . 2. Test tweak Go 40 or 75 LSB and tune to a signal. Now whilst listening critically, adjust TC501 trimmer cap on the last card (AF BOARD). Does this test make it any better to copy a SSB signal? If it does nothing or very little, let me know. You should be able to adjust from all lows to all highs (big changes) Cheers, Randy

SSB Filter Mod Posted in Files in the Modifications Folder

The Elcon modification to the FT-301D filter board is now posted in the Files section. Elcon claims the skirts of the SSB filter are improved through a better, more precise termination of the filter.

RF Speech Processor Adjustment Manual Error
4
Page 31 (c) wants to monitor pin 11 on the "Filter Unit". There is no pin 11 on the filter unit and further, the filter unit is a stage behind the NB board and makes no sense for these adjustments. Anyone have any knowledge here?

WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE YAESU FT-301D USER GROUP. Looks like this is a good place for messages, tips, questions, photos, files, and all other FT-301D amateur radio fun. The FT-301D was marketed starting in 1977 and was a transceiver well ahead of it's time in features and design. I hope ham radio operators will find the Yaesu FT-301D user group a welcome addition to io.groups. I have enjoyed my FT-301D since I originally purchased it new in 1978 at a ham radio store in Lincoln, NE. Have Fun Rex K0KP EN36 at Fish Lake 15 mi. NW of Duluth, MN USA

FT-301D Restoration

Hello, I have begun an attempt to make one good one out of two parts rigs. So far so good. The big problem so far is a bad SSB filter, waiting on delivery of a parts rig with 2 filter boards. Hopefully one filter will play. This is a very interesting little transceiver. Cheers all, Randy
