Windows odd behavior

Hello,

I installed YAAC on a, I believe a Windows 10 machine. ?The radio is a new FTM-500 and the idea was to display a map of APRS traffic around the location. ?I could see raw packets on messages but no stations on the map. I am curious why I can see the raw packaets and not see anying on the map. ?On a new install on a PC is there a filter or something you have to change to get YAAC to see stations on the map?
In other installations on linux machines I alwasy see stations on the map if I am getitng raw packets.?

Since I do not run on windows any thoughts from the those that do use windows. ?

What port driver did you select to talk to the Yaesu radio? The Yaesu APRS radios use their own non-standard way to deliver APRS packets to the serial port, so you have to use the Yaesu (not Kenwood or Serial_TNC) port driver. And you have to select the Yaesu date format you picked on the radio in the YAAC Yaesu port driver to match, otherwise the packets will have screwed-up timestamps that will probably cause YAAC to expire the packets prematurely. Same problem if the Yaesu radio's clock isn't set correctly.

Also, are you panned on the map to the geographical area where the packets are coming in from? If this is a new installation of YAAC, it will center the map at the center of the North American continent until you configure your beacon (even though the Yaesu radio won't allow you to transmit from YAAC).

Andrew,

I did find the location was wrong for a fixed location, and I fixed that as the first issue. ?I will check the port, but are you saying slect the Kenwood selection and change it to Yaesu? Also if the data shows up in the raw packets and the stations show the data will not be on the map. ?

On the beacon I did not turn it on becasue YAAC cannot beacon on YAESU radios. ?

Thank you,
Tim?

No, just use the Yaesu port type in YAAC. You need to set your station position in the beacon, regardless of whether you enable the beacon, so the Home button works correctly.

If the packets are appearing in Raw Packets, what kind of packets are you receiving? If they don't have positions in them, then you won't see them. If there are position reports in the raw packets that aren't expired according to the packet timestamp,? then the stations will appear on the map at their reported positions.

Are you looking at that location on the map? The lower left corner of the map tells you the last map position the mouse cursor was over; is that anywhere close to the stations' reported positions (including the hemisphere; East longitude != West longitude).

Andrew,

I still cannot get data to the map. I can see data when I test the port. Yes the port type is Yaesu. I am wondering if the data type is the problem. ?I did update the driver too. ?I do see the RF symbol is green. ?I’m running yaac version 1.0 beta 183. This is a new radio as the FTM-500.?

Please let me know what to test next I really need to get this working for the signals museum.?

What is the timestamp on the records you're seeing in the Raw Packets view? If it is not reasonably close to now (check the date, too), then you are either using the wrong date format to get the timestamp from the Yaesu radio, or the Yaesu's clock isn't set correctly.

It is entirely possible that Yaesu changed the radio output format from what the FTM-400DR uses (that is the radio model I used as a standard for decoding the packets).

Also, on the Yaesu port configuration dialog, click the check box labeled "Log raw input data". Then, after another attempt, capture the Yaesu-yyyyMMMdd.txt file from your YAAC log directory and send it to me. That will help me debug what is going on.

Andrew,

Oh, yeah, that's a feature change.

Look at the Yaesu debug log output:

YAESU FTM-500D
Version 1.02

$GPWPL,3436.33,N,08627.26,W,W4HBO-3*6C
$GPWPL,3444.46,N,08635.78,W,KM4ESU-2*35

Those last two lines are NMEA-0183 waypoint messages, like the Kenwood TM-D710 sends out the little 1/8-inch TRS phone jack on the side of its control head when it is configured to connect a GPS there. So your Yaesu FTM-500D, as presently configured, is set up to send waypoints to a GPS, not forward raw APRS packets to a computer. Frankly, I'm surprised you're seeing anything at all on the Raw Packets display with that kind of input. There certainly are enough error messages in the YAAC.out log file from trying to parse the NMEA-0183 sentences as TNC-2 command-mode APRS packets.

Unfortunately, YAAC has no port driver that will accept that sort of data. In fact, YAAC can actually _send_ waypoints to a GPS just like the Kenwood TM-D710 can, but it won't handle _receiving_ them into YAAC.

Check the manual for the FTM-500D and see if there is a menu option to pick a different output format (like the format the FTM-400DR uses).

Andrew,

In an attempt to get anything to work with YAAC, I tried Waypoint data out, GPS data output, and finally Packet data formats. You might have seen Waypoint and GPS in the data. ?Now once I switched to Packet data out I started seeing packets in raw packets and stations on the map. ?I am not sure why packet worked better but it did. ?The data did not appear to be completely correct.

I have did not see anyway to change the waypoint in the FTM-500 manual to make any changes. ?

Packet format worked because that is what YAAC expects to see. Waypoint-out is for driving an external screen GPS, and GPS-out presumably is so some other device can use the GPS receiver built into the radio.

Glad you're working now. Oh, you can uncheck the "Log raw data" checkbox now that the problem is solved. No reason to waste the disk space.

Andrew,

Thank you for your help. This radio and YAAC is in the Signals museum in Huntsville that will show APRS traffic for visitors. ?It opens next summer if you ever come to Huntsville perhaps for the hamfest come by and see the display. ?
