Replacing parts for Xpander buttons
13
Hi, Does anybody know, if there are anywhere available spare Xpander buttons, originals or compatible? I might be even willing to trade a CEM3374 or a display for buttons - if sale is not an option. Merry Christmas to All! Tiitu

message for Karl Schmeer
Hello Karl ! I received your email days ago and replied. Again,- after some days I got the mailer demon "mail delivery failed ..., permanent error". Unfortunately youre the only one I cannot send emails and it happens since Yahoo changed something. In the attachement youll find the note according to mail delivery error. Maybe youre able to contact your provider and fix it. I keep it short here cause I dont think its the place discussing our private stuff. So, take it as some emergency notification via Xpantastic cause I dont see any other way contacting you a.t.m.. thx PeWe

Xpander/M-12 voice volume variations
4
Hi all, curious if anyone has come across an issue where individual voice volumes on their xpander/M-12 are not the same? On my M-12, I have one voice in particular that is about 1dB quieter than the rest. It's not really noticeable in use, but was also just noticeable enough for me to become aware of it. I should note that all of the voices are slightly different volumes when you actually start measuring them, but most are so close as to be a non-issue. If anything, it seems like one voice board (1-6) is slightly quieter than the other, but it passes on the VCA calibration (and everything else) so I'm wondering if it's maybe a parts tolerance thing that just hasn't gone out enough yet to cause the calibration to fail. I probably won't try and "fix" it for now, but it would be good to know in advance what the culprit might be. I.e., is this happening at the board level, or the voice level?

Periodic Clicking From Matrix 12
I have a Matrix 12 and it's in great shape, but while idle, or while playing, it randomly outputs a little click. It's very random. Sometimes every 5 minutes, sometimes not for hours. I've replaced the battery and started reseating a bunch of IC's from the CPU/programmer board. Any thoughts on what this could be?

Oscillator 2 constant pitch
Hi, I have recently noticed that VCO2 on voice 9 on my Matrix 12 has developed a problem where the pitch is always the same regardless of the note played. The problem is not apparent on VCO1 which works as expected. At first I suspected it was a problem with the voice chip.. but having switched boards around I see that the problem is always voice 9. So I suspect the problem is elsewhere.. is there something on another board which is responsible for pitch tracking... could the cable connector to the lower board be the problem? Just asking in case anyone has had a similar problem. Regards Neil

Random patches bounty
4
Hi folks, I'm willing to pay $100 to the person who can generate a random patch, and make the patch play from the keyboard instead of just a one-shot with no scale. This would be a modification to the Xplorer software, and the source is now available. Cheers, Jeremy.

Xpander sysex patch spec- the Xplorer version
4
I'm trying to understand the calculations that the single patch browser (included with Xplorer) ueses. Looking at XpanderSysEx.h // Single patch data sysex length is 399 bytes// 6 bytes for sysex intro: F0 10 02....static const int PRG_DUMP_DATA_FOLLOWS_INTRO_LENGTH = 6;// 188 double bytes data for the values and 8 double bytes for the patch namestatic const int PATCHNAME_LENGTH = 8;static const int OBWORDS_DATA_LENGTH = 196 - PATCHNAME_LENGTH;// 6 (intro) +196*2 (data+name) +1 (EOX) = 399 I understand that PRG_DUMP_DATA_FOLLOWS_INTRO_LENGTH is for the Sysex cmd overhead to request a single patch, however, I don't understand why he subtracts the patchname length from 196, when the patch name is part of each single patch. 196 & 2 + 8 = 399 bytes, which is correct What am I missing?

Want to trade: CEM 3372 B series chips for C series
3
Hi all, looking to trade or sell a few CEMs--I've got 9 new old stock 3372 B series chips; I need 3 C series. I would trade 3 for 3 C series and sell the rest if possible. If someone wants to buy all of them, I can definitely do that, but I'd defer to a part-trade first if possible. thanks! Matt

Matrix 12 voice fail.
3
Folks! on Autotune I get a Fail on Voice 9. How can I check which is Voice 9 on the voice boards? inside the Matrix 12 I see 2 identical boards one on top of the other with voices labelled 1-6 on each. Is there a way to identify which section is for Voice 9? Thanks in advance.

Hi folks, Here's my new album : https://straightouttamongolia.bandcamp.com/album/mutant-pop-lp I'm just posting it here because I need some people to listen to it - and buy it! 'What Is Life' is not the Xpander, but the Korg Z1. Cheers, Jeremy.

Fuse blown on Xpander
Hi folks, Soon after I got my Xpander, I had it on 110v and plugged in a 240v cable. The fuse blew and I got some new fuses from Maplin. It seemed to work okay afer replacing the fuse. My question is: Could the power surge blowing the fuse, have damaged the voice chips? I'm convinced it doesn't sound as 'fresh' as a functional Xpander. Cheers, Jeremy.

Getting random patches in Xplorer keyboard tracked
7
Hi folks, I bought Xplorer a while back. It has the ability to make a random patch. The problem is, the patch can't be played on the keyboard because that aspect is randomised too. What patch settings do I need on the Xpander to make a random patch keyboard tracked? So that it plays the notes you play, but the rest of the random patch. The guy said read the manual, but I still can't figure it out! All the best, Jeremy.

Faster envelopes on Matrix 12/Xpander - Conversation with one of the designers
24
Hi everyone, When I read the "percussive like patches"-thread, I was reminded that I while ago (when the Matrix 12 was my only analog synth) that I (as many others) was a bit frustrated with the M12?s slow enevelopes. SoI wrote an email to one of the creators of this beast(Michel Doidic) and asked what could be done. Here is our conversation: "Mr Ryle, Mr Doidic, first off I want to thank you for being part of designing (among other things) the fantastic Oberheim Matrix 12. I have the incredible luck to have found one (Matrix 12) for sale in Sweden. Although this is very "off topic", I would be incredibly grateful and happy if you guys could try (who else could?) answer the following question: Do you think it would be possible in some way to modify the envelopes of the Matrix 12 to be faster ? I know they are software envelopes, but today there are a lot of softEnvs that are snappy, also on at least two analog synths which have softwareEnvs (one is Studio Electronics Se-1/x) where if you changed a resistor on the motherboard, the software envelopes became dramatically faster and snappier, almost at Minimoog speed. Could it be enough to change resistors in the right place, or would it be necesarry to recode/reprogram the whole software for the Matrix 12? I know this a hard question, but a solution,if possible, would mean that a fantastic synth would become the greatest of them all IMHO. I thank you once again and send you my best regards Attila" His answer: "Hi Attila, To do the job right would be very difficult because, as you noticed, the envelopes are generated by the code of the 6809 microprocessor. Short of using a faster 6809 (assuming that you could get one) and modifying the code there is not much which can be done. The Matrix 6 and 12 were designed about 25 years ago, and microprocessors where a lot slower back then. There is still a bit of hope however. The fastest time for the envelopes is about 2 milliseconds. This could be reduce to 1 ms by changing RX51 for the VCA (where X will be 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 according to which of the six voice it controls on each of the two voice boards) from 18K to 9.1K. The next fastest time is set by the microprocessor and an analog smoothing filter on the voltage control circuit (= Sample and Hold). This time is set not only by the software but also by a resistor RX14 on each of the main voice PCB for the VCA control and by RX10 for the VCF frequency control. You may want to try reducing these resistors from their original 1 M Ohm value to let say 500K Ohm. This will reduce that time from about 7 ms to about 3.5 ms. The draw back however is that you may get more discontinuity in the shape of the modulation. The next fastest times however will still be determined by the 6809 software and that will not change. Give it a try on one of the voice and see if that goes toward what you want. Hope that this helps a bit. Michel Doidic Line 6 CTO" OK guys, what do you think? I changed a resistor in my SE-1, and it become snappier (not fantastic, but better) Also, the Chroma has a reputaion of very slow envelopes, but same thing there, if you remove a resistor or change it to a lower value, envelopes supposedly become faster. I would even go so far to check out the possibilities of putting in a faster processor and find someone to recode the software. Brainstorming please begin :)

Xpander/M12 autotuning/tuning table query
3
hi all, wondering if anyone can explain the autoning process and the storage of tuning tables to me (the service manual is pretty helpful, but this pertains to the issue below). Basically, after having not had to tune my M12 for months, I suddenly found a few voices slightly out of tune yesterday. I attributed this to recent weather and autotuning cured it. But then I hit "untune" (just to see how "out" everything really was) and had to go through the whole tuning process again. (the only recent "change" was that I rotated out some 3372s under the hood, but the 3374s were untouched.) Jump forward to today, turning on this morning, I found a couple of voices were beating more than the others. After it had warmed up for a while, I began hitting autotune until all voices were yielding pretty much no significant beating. That tuning has now been fine for the rest of the day. So getting back to my initial question: does it make sense for the autotune tuning tables to improve their accuracy with increased time (and also after full warmup)? Obviously there's no "background" tuning, but the voices seem to have improved stability overall through the day. Given that my need to tune yesterday was a bit of a surprise, I'm just wondering if there's some creeping issue I should be aware of, or if this sounds normal. I should add that this was recapped fairly recently, so I don't suspect anything there.
