Re: Re : Matrix 12 not booting up
I have not measured the voltage in my unit, but if it should be 60.2V, then 55V is absolutely too low to be correct at least. If the specs would say 60V instead of 60.2V, then 55V might be about alright, in my opinion.

Re: Re : Matrix 12 not booting up
Hi
EP has?good advice about your problem. Also, It sounds to me like your M12 stuck in start-up. This points to the main processor board.? I would start by carefully disconnecting and reconnecting the cables that run to the main processor board. Do this until you?run out of connectors to check,?Do this with both ends?of each cable.? If still not working, All chips are in a socket. This is a good and bad thing. On the good side repairs are easy and there is little chance to damage the circuit board. On the bad side : The chips can work themselves loose over time, and dirt, corrosion, etc can build up on the connection between the IC and the socket.? But re-seating them often fixes many problems So Try pushing down all the IC's on the main processor board. Some may have worked themselves loose. Next: What you might try is to gently remove and re-seat the microprocessor on the main board,?and the?associated logic and memory chips. Hi, The 9V AC is used only for the filaments of the tubes and is not regulated. So, it possible that you have a probleme with one of the display. Disconnect the cable from the panel board to the display board and see if the Matirx have a correct response with your action on the button. The LEDs have to behave a usual. In the same time, control the voltage of the CPU board (pin 7 of the 6809). You must have 5V. If not, perhaps the PSU have problem! does 60.2vdc sound close enough for the 55vdc? all the other voltages read properly. --- In xpantastic@..., E P <erfly44@...> wrote:

Matrix 12 not booting up

Hi all, im hoping someone might have some ideas/leads for me. upon turning on, my M12 is not producing sound, most red LED's are solid on, and the displays are blank. if i hold the "clear" button while turning on, the "RESET" option flashes for just a split second, then disappears.
i have checked the PSU voltages, and everything is within the specs of the service manual EXCEPT: 9vac reads about 6.5vac 55vdc reads about 60.2vdc any ideas? are those within normal specs you think, or do i need to be concerned with that discrepancy? thanks for the help!!! |

Replacement Encoders Found!
Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice!
I have found an extremely suitable encoder for replacing cranky/dead ones on the Xpander. They are relatively new from Bourns. The part number you want is PEC09-2325K-N0015. Digikey and Mouser have them. They are 30 detent, 30 pulses per rotation. Rather than D shafts they have the old style knurled round shaft. The locking collets fit perfectly. Unlike most encoders, these have a nice strong detent - not as heavy as the Xpander but solid and obvious. They work a peach. The best part is they are around $2.30 in quantity 1. Buy enough for 3 spare sets and you are set for life. There are a couple of drawbacks, none of them major or deal breakers. First, the encoder shaft is long. The part comes with shorter shafts but I can't find anyone stocking them. I used a couple of washers on the bottom side of the encoder to shim it away from the PCB to the correct height. Secondly, they are small in diameter so you will need to hold them while you tighten them in place to keep them centered. You could make some kind of a spacer but I didn't bother. Thirdly, the encoders are only available with the through hole connection and not solder lugs so you have a little delicate soldering to do. Forth, the housing has a positioning tab you will need to cut off with a pair of snips so it sits flat on the PCB. Lastly, the housing is much smaller than the original encoders so will either need to solder on extensions to the existing connections or just replace them with new longer wire. Which is the correct way to go about it. James R. Coplin |

Hi, I have a few more of these chips in stock now. Thanks, Doug synthparts.com

Please, you can contact Doug directly in his email address. But, be aware that a CEM3374 is one of the most rare vintage synth chips! Therefore, you should buy them as many as you can afford or is available. I would take a pair as a minimum. But, in any case, you just need to change that chip, which is not working. Take all the precautions against the static electricity, which can break this and many other ships, if you are careless. Have you also tried to push the chips back to their places? They have the tendency to come up after many years of use. Or, remove the assumably problematic chip and then push it carefully and tightly back to its place. This could well be enough to fix the problem. An other as important work is to replace all condensators, which tend to dry during the years. This is very typically done also just as a precaution. |

Re: Remote control of the xpander
1) The easy way: Use Pedal 1 or 2 as modulation sources:
toggle quoted message
Show quoted text
Go to Master Page/Midi/Ctrl and assign a control change number to Pedal 1 or Pedal 2. In your tone, set Pedal 1 or 2 as modulation source of your parameter. The bad news is that you'll have to set the modulation sources for each of your single patch. 2) The "geeky" way: Transform Control Changes messages to SysEx and send them to Xpander: On the Xpander, to change a parameter in SysEx, you first need to send a page select, and then a parameter change: ex: page select: F0 10 02 0B 20 00 F7 (VCO1, subpage 0) param change: F0 10 02 0A 00 08 00 00 00 63 00 F7 (bottom button...) See the OberheimXpanderMidiSpec document in the file section of the group for details. You don't need to resend a page select for the next param if it is still in the same page/subpage than the previous one. Page/subpage select takes a lot of time to be taken in account by the Xpander. So what you have to do is to have a software (Midi-OX, Bome's MIDI Translator) or device panel/mixermap(in Cubase for example)... on your PC that transforms a control change value into this kind of SysEx messages and send them to the Xpander. The good news: Once you've setup this "CC# to SysEx" chain, it will work on every single patch without modifying them. You can even control parameters that have no free modulation sources. The bad news: you have to read the Xpander MIDI spec and understand it before doing anything ;) Hope this helps, /Greg. --- In xpantastic@..., "stardent2000" <nickw@...> wrote:

Remote control of the xpander
stardent2000
Hello I'm new to the xpander (and synthesizers in general) and was wondering if someone could help with a little advice.
I have an evolution mks-149 that has lots of assignable knobs that i would like to map to various parameters in the xpander (i really dont like the encoders on the xpander, they take so many turns to get from 0 to 127, and I can hear them clicking loudly through my headphones as I tweak a sound). I am using cubase and it receives midi from the knobs as I turn them but then what? the xpander receives pitchbend and modulation from the wheels ok but how can I tell the xpander to take data from a knob and map that to the (say) resonance. Can somebody point me in the right direction on this? I hope I'm not asking a dumb question but I find all this VERY confusing! Thanks, Nick |
