Re: Hum interference after recaping my Xpander

I.e., is it more of acoustic than electric origin?

Re: Hum interference after recaping my Xpander

Oh, sorry, did you say that your Xpander is humming even though you don't have any loadspeakers connected and all other gear then the Xpander off?!

I think it is then only the power unit that is able to hum like this and it would require to be replaced. (Can be a fire risk, if you don't.)

Have you tried to connect it in a provenly correctly grounded (three wires) wall plug? And, also, tried in the both orientations of the plug?

...

Hi, this is not normal.

You quite likely need a hum eliminator:

Hum interference after recaping my Xpander

Tobbe Bergman

Hi Xpander users

I noticed that my Xpander makes quite?a?loud humming noise just sitting close to it and when playing electric guitar right next to it makes the guitar signal really noisy.

I had it at my techie for almost a year but I cant remember it made such a loud hum sitting close to it or that it interfere with my guitar.

I have a lot of equipment but the Xpander makes the most noise and I can actually hear the humming across my room when there are no speakers on at all.

Apart from that it works great !

Could anyone confirm that this is normal or not ?

Thanks

Does anyone have this patch?

That mellow pad at 01:42

Thanks

sam @ has a full replacement kit, very nice encoders, detented but much smoother and quieter than the originals. they feel great. Kit also comes with a set of debounce capacitors.

Hi! I'm still looking for an encoder replacement. I'm surfing on the mouser website () and there are a lot of mechanical incremental encoder. Instead of the ALPS, that doesn't offer a real 1:1 replacement, I've found a Bourns model: PEC11-4220K-N0024. It's a 24 pulses/24 detents, 20mm shaft lenght, knurled profile, no switch, metal shell.....in other words these encoders are REALLY IDENTICAL to the original ones! Am I wrong?
And if you want, there is the "no dentents" version...

Have a nice week end!

These worked for me.

Re: Xplorer review

true. now if it were being used to try and MIDI sequence the Xpander, I'd say no way in hell...but since it's just being used to send patch/sysex data and control parameters, it may still be useable as long as you are not expecting fluid realtime response.?

let us know how it turns out.

I agree there will be delays, but I'm able to download firmware via
USB from Windows 7 in Parallels running on OSX 10.6,
to microcontroller development boards that are external to the machine.

Granted it's not a midi device, but a straight USB interface is likely
more demanding than Midi.

Also, Xpander patches are sent/received via sysex, which is extremely
slow to begin with.

Give it a try- I'd be interested in your results. Just make sure that
you assign the USB device to the VM, so that it
doesn't get assigned to OSX..

I may just try this myself.

Re: Xplorer review

I may give that windows 7 simulation a try on a my old 13" macbook just to use the editor and random function.

Would a Emagic MT-4 work as ?basic midi interface ??

Hi folks,

I just bought the Xplorer software from

It's very good. It only just fits my 1280x800 screen, but it does fit!

The randomise patch function is a lot of fun. I'm now convinced my
Xpander can do those Human League - Romantic sounds!

I will post again once I've started programming the synth properly.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Re: Xplorer review

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I dont think USB based MIDI interfaces are going to work very well through a virtual instance of Windows (VMware or Parallels). Its not a simulation. Its a real instance of the OS running with a hypervisor layer underneath making it think its sitting on standard PC hardware. Most hypervisors have latency involved when doing USB passthru to the actual hardware ports. So expect that you may have issues with that.?

You're better approach is to bootcamp your Mac with Windows. That will allow Windows to access the hardware directly and it will work just fine. And doesnt touch or mess with your install of OS X.

Re: Xpander CPU Board

no problem! eventually it would be good to know exactly what the error message really means and if there is truly any real impact to the synth. but as far as I can see and hear from how I know how to use the Xpander, everything works as expected.?

Fantastic, despite this error message, I successfully load the full factory presets into my CPU board. Thank you for the information. I did not attempt to test this before since I was sure it was a real problem.

Thank you again Omar !

I'm almost certain the BAD RAM message is not something to be worried about. My Xpander gives the same error message, haven't noticed a single issue. The previous owner before me said the same thing.
