The primary benefit of an email-based system (which Yahoo Groups is for me, I've never used the site) is that it's easy to search the archive (as I don't delete old/read messages). Facebook in my experience is terrible for searching for old content (or indeed is just generally terrible). Please let's not go there...

If we can keep going as an email mailing list that's great. It looks like we'd need to move the files we want to keep to e.g. Google Drive or something by December 14th.

Re: Yahoo is killing Yahoo groups- Should we moved to Discord, Discourse, Slack or something similar?

According to:?

"You'll still be able to communicate with your groups via email and search for private groups on the site. In addition, admins will continue to have limited access to group settings and administration tools."

So, communication won't be lost, just all the resources uploaded to the group.? I'd be happy to host resources on my site for anyone interested.

Maybe ?

It's not super clear to me if there is an obvious replacement, but it appears to be similar in spirit to yahoo groups. They have yahoo import and supposedly it's free as long as there is no more than 1GB of uploaded files.

Re: removing matte finish from Xpander front panel

I used ethanol and elbow grease.? I actually did this accidentally, as I was trying to clean off case foam that had stuck to it. ? It takes a fair amount of rubbing and don't be cheap with the ethanol. ? It does not affect the diagrams underneath.

PS:? I was surprised to see a unit being sold in this condition (without the matte finish).? I figured it would reduce its value or even be a deal breaker, like no one would buy one like this.? I guess the fashion has changed?

removing matte finish from Xpander front panel

Someone on the AH list is asking about how to remove the matte finish from an Xpander and while I found some photos I can't seem to find the info on how to do it. I vaguely remember that it's not all that difficult but I can't find any instructions. Anyone know where it is?

Gloss finish Matrix 12, for reference:?

Thanks,

Seth

Re: Xpander tuning issue

Dont replace parts just on suspicion. Unreflected activism may lead to more trouble than intended to resolve.
Think thrice before igniting the blowtorch and touching the system.
I urge you to get comfortable with an Oscilloscope and to try to understand the schematics which BTW are good to read. Use colors to mark signal flows, CV and audio.

If there is a problem with a whole group of parallel circuits voices, the problem most likely is located upstream thereof.

Re: Xpander tuning issue

Thanks Karl for your kind help,
I read on the conversations this thing about the capacitor's failure but I didn't think that all of them would fail at the same time...
Anyway I will change the capacitors and will be back here soon..

Re: Xpander tuning issue

Hi

Frequently, fails like this are caused by open coupling caps at the output of each voice. Part # would be Cx49 on the voice board a 2.2 uF electrolytic.

Look in the resources on this site for an Xpander service manual. I think there is a simple DAC testing routine you can access from
the Xpander's service page.

I 'd change not only all capacitors, but the whole XPander and move to another neighborhood - just to make sure.

Change all capacitors, is not a good advice to a laymen. It can do more much more damage than the defect currently observed.

My advice would be to put more effort into locating the defect first, than just start some tedious solder work. IMHO the capacitor swapping thing is very fashy but often to no avail. Capacitors may break indeed, but no as often as indicated in these nice forums here. In fact, in the way over hundred of 80ies synths I had to repair, the capacitors only rarely had a problem.

I've seen lots of broken CMOS (40XX- and 45XX-type), OP-Amps (TL-type) and even resistors and ceramic capacitors (I've never read in a thread to change resistors or ceramic capacitors, but, yes the tend to break, in particular in California made Synths ;-)

I also note that electrolytics of that era are of much better quality as the material sold today.? Why would you swap a electronic element, known to last more than 50 years, for a new part calculated be clever engineers to last ten years at most.

There are weak points in the Xpander VoiceBoard though:

the CMOS ICs and

the Styroflex S/H-charge capacitors.

Those components weren't build so well those days and tend to break quite often, that is, to become short, open or some? state of random switching in between (funny).

Soldering of Styroflex caps is difficult and requires some experience. The must not get hot! There is no need to use Styroflex type again. You may use modern cap types here.

With you tunig problem, I'd first try to locate the tuning circuit in the schematics? (or ask s.o. here) and then change/swap? only t the parts for that functional instance. I'd start swapping the CMOS, then checking the S/H caps there, then the OP-Amps involved, then the electrolytics there.?

Soldering of Styroflex caps is difficult and requires some experience. The must not get hot! There is no need to use Styroflex type again. You may use modern cap types here.

GOOD LUCK

New hardware programmer for Xpander/Matrix-12

Hi all,?

I've been in some discussions with Doug @ SynthArk about creating a bespoke controller for the Xpander/M-12. He has completed a mockup which I am sharing the details of below. These are by no means set in stone, but are a pretty good indication of what the final product would look like. Certainly get in touch with him if you want one, or we can discuss any possible changes here.?

"I finished the Matrix12/Xpander programmer layout design (see attached).?
Large circles are knobs, small circles are switches, and skinny rectangles are LED sliders.

Here is the class description:

"x" (3U, $256 retail): LFOs, Envelopes, Ramps, and Tracking Generators have shared controls, which is great if you want to set parameters for more than one, but can be annoying when bouncing between them. No Matrix modulation or Multi-Patch editing is supported.

"y" (6U, $640 retail): Same as "x", but adds Matrix modulation (1-16)?
and Multi-Patch editing.

"z" (9U, $896 retaill): Dedicated controls for LFOs, Envelopes, Ramps, and Tracking Generators, along with Matrix modulation (1-16) and Multi-Patch editing.

I would need at least 10 pre-orders before I can bump the priority to Q2 (April-June). I can extend the 20% AH discount to pre-orders, bringing the price to $204 for "x" class, $512 for "y" class, and $716 for "z" class (+shipping). Just have anyone interested contact me directly and mention you."

Re: Replacing parts for Xpander buttons

I just some some replacements on ebay.

Re: Replacing parts for Xpander buttons

To be more precise ; 6425.1101 are compatible with JAP Xpander/M12 switches, but you have to adapt them :

Jap? switchs pin spacing = 10mm
US? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?pin spacing? ?= 5mm

Be prepared ! ;)

Other than that, they work flawlessly on my JAP M12
