If it's of any help, I just recently restored the factory patches:
I also couldn't get it to work using MIDI, luckily it worked without any problem using the "audio interface": use some player on your computer to play the audio-file containing the whole patch-information, tell your Matrix 12 to import from audio, and then press play in your player.
