GUIDED DISCUSSION GROUP FOR PARENTS OF THE GIFTED & TALENTED

The SENG Model Parent Group is a series of guided discussions facilitated by trained SENG facilitators about the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented children and how to parent to meet those needs. It is an opportunity for parents to connect with other parents to learn why these children are different. Understand how to best communicate with, motivate, discipline, and guide your talented child. Share your successes and concerns, joys and challenges of parenting your gifted children in a safe and confidential environment.

OBJECTIVE

Establish an environment in which parents of talented children can receive support, guidance, and professional advice through discussion with other parents and trained leaders.

Develop parenting skills to nurture the self-concept and emotional development of talented children and their families.

SESSION TOPICS

SENG Model Parent Group (SMPG) meet weekly for six to ten weeks. Each weeksdiscussion will be focused on a specific topic relevant to parents of gifted children.

WEEK 1:? Identification and Characteristics

WEEK 2:? Motivation and Discipline

WEEK 3:? SIbling, Parent and Peer Relationships

WEEK 4:? Stress Management and Depression

WEEK 5:? Communication of Feelings and Tradition Breaking

WEEK 6: Tools for Life (At Home and At School) & Talent Development

PARENTING THE GIFTED CHILD

  1. Share your parenting joys and concerns in a supportive, non-judgmental environment
  2. Explore gifted characteristics, and what they mean in your parenting and in your life
  3. Learn from other parents, while they learn from you
  4. Receive positive feedback and encouragement to try new parenting techniques
  5. Enjoy access to a variety of resources handpicked for your group by your facilitators
  6. Find your like-minded peers, & learn strategies for helping your children find theirs
  7. Gain strategies to support your child socially and emotionally

Both are experienced parents of gifted children and licensed mental health professionals.
